Sam. Being a man from Northern Lower Peninsula, MI,... Petoskey specifically... I recommend that you winter camp in one of the rustic cabins offered at Wilderness State Park. Ski in or snow shoe in the winter only. Awesome! The Sturgeon Bay cabin or the Wagoshaunce cabins being my favs. Log cabin, wood stove, outhouse, water pump, bunks for 6-8.... So good. Highly recommended. Gotta make reservations a good while in advance.... you would like.

I hit the Barrens a lot in order to get the isolation, but there are some heavy fire restrictions. Still...one million acres is a lot of fun to camp in.

Camped out on Turtle Island in '01, lighthouse ruins were only thing there then. Following year owners ( it's a private island) started building without any permits, and were forced to stop, leaving a couple half built houses and the crane. Fun fact, the state line divides the island.

Not mentioning the trouble you were having with your drone, battery issues are something you need to be prepared for when flying in cold weather, those battery packs need to be warmed up, or at least brought up to temperatures things flow better with. Pack them and keep them in a warm place and they’ll perform much better as when you fly it will keep it warm by nature of battery depletion. Good luck!
