Mic A has more highs, Mic B sounds bassier and more compressed on guitar. There was no objective "better", but A tended to be more precise and detailed in the tone, while B is a bit muddy. I would say it depends on what kind of sound do you like, A is more for HiFi and B more for an raw, homemade sound (especially for Punk, it would be awesome).

Exactly. It really depends on what you intend it for. I didn't hear 'muddied' . They were both too similar for my ear to pick a difference. I mainly look at mics for vocal usage though and should try and train my ear more for it. :)

I think Mic A cuts a lot better through the mix, which I am definitely a fan of. I'd like to give the SM-57 the benefit of the doubt, since, you know, it's a pretty expensive mic and well established. But as a proud(?) owner of a MB-75, I know that it has a lot of definition in the higher frequencies, so I guess I probably like the cheap mic more. Let's see what the results say tho.

@@kotekutalia A genuine 57 will give lush midrange tone with great low-end response and a counterfeit will not produce even somewhat similar results. The fakes are made for about a $1 in china, and are sold on Ebay at times for $70-$100. They have copied them down to where you cant see the difference, but you can hear it.
@valium-fm7236
@valium-fm7236 6 жыл бұрын
@Kote Kutalia A really quick way to spot a fake sm57, is by looking at the bottom where the XLR canble goes. Shure only use a “silver” metal on the prongs on the bottom of the mic. A fake will have “gold” coloured prongs. Also the bag that comes with a fake will be a really tacky cheap plasticy thing. There’s loads of other signs of a fake, but those are probably the quickest & easiest things to spot. Fanx For Askin 😁

+Rínzai Music The top end is exactly the first thing that gives me troubles in every live situation, wasting time and finding the resonance peaks, and when you have to cut it with some old analog board (yeah, they are still around) it's just painful. If I need a mic for its definition, I would not use either. A darker mic, lacking the harshness on the top end, is just what I need to quickly cut some mids, hipass around 80 and push the volume :)

I might be a bit late to state this but I hope you'll get a chance to see this I check out your videos quite often. Even though I don't make metal or hard rock music I still know there's a lot to learn from other genres and I've learned a lot from your channel so thank you. I recently purchased the Pyle version of the SM57 to see how it really sounds and they aren't great but they could be useful on darker sounding vintage tube amps like the older 60s Vox amps. I did however on the advice of another engineer who also does recording tutorials rewire them with the same transformer that comes in the stock Shure SM57. I found they make great mics for toms and since the mics and transformers could be bought for about $15 each you could stock up on mics that sound great on toms and can be used as a good alternative on amps for about $30 bucks. Once you figure out which side is the positive and negative (the transformer is color coded for +/-) it's four quick solder points and a screw. Simple mod. *Disclaimer for anyone reading: Be careful with soldering irons, they are hot. Having a good set of pliers within reach makes the process easier and you don't need much solder to wire it up so burning your fingers is very much possible. Just be careful and enjoy.

I know your channel is focused on recording and I have not recorded with this setup. But they're okay live. I am using Gibraltar SC-GBDIMM mounts. While these are not May internal mic mounts. I'm pretty sure that mic B is the fake though, although I don't have an sm57 and will be picking up the t.bone until I can afford the real deal. Great video Glenn!

I’d pick microphone B for both guitar and snare. I like the fatter low mids and smoother top end for both applications. Mic A is a bit harsh/fizzy for my tastes.

Mic A is brighter so its the shure?? They both sound usable and good nonetheless.

A sounds brighter and B sounds more middle and compressed. But I think there is more depth in mic B in the mid range especially when putting this into the mix. Mic A might cut up the higher frequencies vocals and cymbals in the mix. IMO

Mic B sounds a bit muddy to my taste, but I don't think it can be solved by moving the mic a few millimeters towards the edge.

I do hear a difference in the guitars, defenately. I don't know which one is which, but I think they both sound really good!

As for the guitar, the Mic A tone is clearer. And of course you could make it less clear by production if you so chose. Hence it offers more possibilities. I guess... As for the snare, I did not notice any difference, but then again I'm not a drum-recording-obsessed studio owner. And to answer your question: I'd use the cheaper one, since I have no money for an expensive one, nor do I actually need a microphone...

Im gonna have to say, I'm not certain which is which but I would take Mic A on the guitar cabinets and Mic B for the snare.

There is a slight difference. Personally I prefer Mic A on guitar as it sounds a bit clearer but on drums I don't really have a favorite. In the end the difference is subtle so you can definitely work with both, which is quite impressive and the difference can probably be worked out via EQ. If the MB75 is Mic A on guitars it's almost bought.

A suggestion for improvement: I am an idiot in audio comparisons, so I like to move the slider directly into the section of A, listen, then click into a section of B to have instant comparison. If you could label the sections more clearly so that in the small preview window one can see when MIC A and MIC B is being played, that'll be superawesome. Apart form that, great work, I am highly interested in which MIC for Guitars MIC A was, because that sounded more clear to me.

For guitar Mic A I think was the SM57 because it was brighter and more "perfect" sounding and Mic B was the MB75 with that darker tone but god damn I'm gonna end up buying one of those if they're that cheap and sound so similar and use it with my sm57 and see if I get a good mixture of bright/dark sound. Quality find Glenn.

both mics sound good, its a matter of what sound you are looking for in a particular recording. Basically iether mic could cover both areas with a little eq!

For guitar both mics were equal. I could not hear the difference. For drums I think [mic A] had more "air", it picked up the top end better. But if I had [mic B] and needed to use it on a snare, I sure would. So both are fine mics with only a small difference. For 1/3 the price I would definitely consider the MB75 (and until I know in a couple days it may even be the mic I liked best!).

As being a guitarist who records all of my own music, I am going to say that Mic A on the guitar was the 57 and Mic B was the MB 75 and vice versa on the snare. (A - MB75 and B - SM57). The 57 has more high mid - top end "sparkle" on the sound. That's at least what I think I am hearing if that is the case. For a $30 mic that MB does sound pretty decent though I must say.

*Haista vittu, Glenn!* I followed your earlier instructions and went in to my car to listen to the mix and find out the differences. I didn't even get to the car when the music stopped; my wife had pulled the plug and the neighbors have also filed a complaint about noise! And then my wife took the kids and left for her parent's place, so at least I can enjoy _kalsarikännit_ (getting drunk at home in one's underwear, it's a Finnish thing, you know.) So I got that going for me... so, thanks, Glenn! *I think.......*

Mic A seems to have a bit more clarity and punch. Mic B seems to be a bit darker and on the guitars added a slight sludgy ness which is not necessarily a bad thing if that’s what you’re going for. Both tones sounded really good if you ask me.

For the guitar, mic A seemed to have more high frequencies than mic B. The difference was subtle though. Meshuggah could use either one on an album and I'd still love it. I couldn't really judge on the snare because it wasn't A/B'd repeatedly like the guitar was, and I'm just more familiar with guitar tone.

Don’t know which is which yet, but so far, I prefer mic A for guitars as it has more bite and clarity, and I prefer mic B for snare as it has more girth. Both sound great either way, just different tools for different purposes.

I liked mic "a" for recording guitar, and mic "b" for snare. It seemed to me that mic "a" had a deeply and slightly more accurate sound range/profile, mic "b" seemed to cut out significantly when the guitarist stepped to the treble side of the range

For the snare drum, it's really hard to say, the pause betwen the two samples is long enough for the ear to forget what the first one really sounded like, as the two are pretty much close... For the guitar, I like mic A better than B, B is a bit too much dark/dull for my taste. Blending the two could be a good way to adjust brightness without having to use an EQ, though...

I wish there were solo’d clips. Mic A is brighter with maybe a bit more dynamic range, it’s a little tough to tell though with only hearing it in context of a mix. That brightness might sound brittle unprocessed and solo’d. I’ll keep an eye out for the reveal.

In the mixed guitar: A cuts through the mix better than B, but only because it's a bit noisier, so I like B more. However -as I've said-, the only difference I perceive is noise-related, so I can easily get any of the two profiles with just an EQ. Isolated snare: They both sound just as good, I don't care which one was which.

both of them sound good. I have 2 57s and trying to save up for more but this seems like a good alternative to mic up my slightly above average size drum set, since it would be quite expensive otherwise

Mic A definitely has more high end, and is most likely the SM57 in my opinion. In a live situation, which is where I mainly work, I'd say either would work with some EQ adjustments.
