One year ago, Malin was bed-bound and fighting through her final round of chemotherapy. Now she's pulling on a wetsuit and taking on the extreme hobby of surfing! What a difference a year makes.
Malin was diagnosed with colon cancer in the autumn of 2022 and has since endured several rounds of chemotherapy, a full cycle of radiation therapy, and two major operations leaving her without a uterus or colon, and with a permanent colostomy. Malin’s stoma often leaves her with anxiety about trying new things, but she doesn't let it stop her!
After the lengthy battle with colorectal cancer, we decided to sell our house and move in to our converted van to travel around Europe, and we're currently sitting in the warmth of Tenerife.

Who are we?

We are a young 'Swenglish' adventure family, that consists of Swedish Malin, English Tom, and babies Charlie & Isabella, who are half and half. We love all kinds of adventures, including travelling around Sweden and beyond in our self-built campervan called Sunny, we're currently travelling the warmer climates of southern Europe and are glad to be cancer-free, after a rough battle with colon cancer.

So great that you gave surfing a go! Most of the instructing should be done in the water right beside you, especially in tricky conditions like those, seems like he threw you in the deep end. Don't let it change your mind about surfing, it can be easy and the most fun from day one! If you're ever in Devon and want a more welcoming lesson let me know, it would be a pleasure! Good to hear that it wasn’t just us with high expectations! We’ve since surfed a couple more times close by to where they have lessons, and all the instructors there are in the water, some of them are even surfing alongside the people learning. So I think we just had a bit of bad luck picking who we took a lesson with! Would love to surf down in Devon next time we’re in the UK! 😁🌴

Malin, you’re an amazing young lady. Do it with a bit of fear, conquering over it. You both are such a sweet couple and parents. I am proud of you Malin, as you do not let your colostomy bag hinder you from trying and doing what you love. Especially getting in the Ocean. There is one young lady that will not even get in the shallow part of a pool. Also very vain. You are helping so many others that are either battling Ca and or have beat it and Leary of trying things due to their bag, and you are a great example that You can Do anything you want with one. So kudos to you sweetie. The little ones are having so much fun. Do you at times wish you had a nanny and or someone to watch the children so you both can go do things together alone? I know I would maybe a few times. But you don’t let having the children stop you from doing anything. Thank you for bringing us along such a beautiful sight of the ocean etc. enjoy your weekend and look forward to seeing you next Friday. Be safe.

Well done, both of you for trying surfing despite concerns and aches and such! As you both said, try a bit at a time and you can build up necessary strength. Can I share from another colorectal survivor - Tiffany - she recently caught the winter vomiting bug and ended up in hospital because her kidneys got very dehydrated and it seems that if you have a bag from surgery, your body cannot absorb liquids as easily as before - so just be aware in any sort of situation where Malin might need extra time for absorbing liquids, okay? You both have seemed to cope with strong heat there which is great and those 'after-surf' ice creams help too. Keep enjoying!

Tom, you are too young to be having aches and pains, I have to say, I'm 59 and have zero aches and pains! I work out every day and also do yoga. Maybe it would be a good idea at least to incorporate some yoga and basic stretching into your every day......
