I'm two weeks out of FB and Insta. I've also quit any form of gaming. I'm on YT only for learning (such as this). Also slowly getting less urges to look at the phone. Results are great even just in a short time. I've learned so much (books, writing, art, etc.) and I am more focused on the more important things in life such as family, nutrition, exercise, etc.

Cal Newport is great. I recently reverted to a flip phone for a month and during that time I spent 5 days out in the country, disconnected from everything. It was a good experiment, but I have a lot more work to do in order to take control of my digital life. I've improved a lot, but there is a lot of room to grow. I'm now in the reconfigure stage after my month long break.

When I was admitted to inpatient hospitals over the years, no phones were allowed. This was mainly to protect the privacy of everybody, but also, the phones and technology were very distressing for many. We had it replaced with sessions of socializing and good hygiene / food. When I had my first visit a long time ago, they told me to stay off of my computer for 30 days after I got home. I obliged & was far from my normal self, in a good way. I was very calm demeanored, instead of the hellspawn teenager I had previously been. The toxic nature of the internet and communities, alongside my raging teen hormones at the time, had influenced me to being a horrible person. The internet is truly the devil's candy. I'm very different now, but I still go on the computer just as much as I used to. I simply believe I've grown out of that hellspawn phase.

Just for perspective, I started becoming active on social media because of peer pressure and necessity. It truly is addictive and after a trial period, I studiously avoided it throughout the 00's and early 2010s, only really getting into it about 5 to 6 years ago because some of my social groups refused to engage in any way other than group chats. Currently I'm still using it for work reasons, while some of my personal contacts have downgraded our friendship because I refuse to engage with them unless they at least call or text. My point is that social media is not at fault for being addictive. The algorithms used to help you find things you might like are just doing what users expect. Social media is only terrible because users demanded it be terrible. I don't think this Goal Guys video denigrates or demonizes social media companies too much, but it did seem to imply that social media or social media companies consciously set out to make us addicted. We need to recognize that it's a great product whose good and bad qualities exist due to consumer demand. The reason I'm stuck in it and got addicted at some point is still because of my contacts, not because of social media companies / developers. Anybody who ever had the misfortune to read or write Friendster testimonials should know what I'm talking about.

My internet addiction has ramped up during the covid pandemic. Somedays I spend 14 hrs mindlessly surfing the internet researching whatever strikes my fancy. The addiction intensity waxes and wanes, but today it feels really bad; it feels like my ass is glued to the sofa and stepping away feels nearly impossible. I'm seriously considering getting rid of my laptop and using my tiny iPhone SE as my main internet device., which I find much less engaging than my laptop. I'm hoping the void from not being able to get my laptop dopamine fix will compel me to do the many things I've been putting off because of the pull of the internet vortex.

My issue isn't even social media and messaging apps. My problem is my constant thinking about stuff and having the urge to Google it. If I get rid of my smartphone I might make my life more complicated as it also contains a lot of tools which have now become necessary for life such as banking, WhatsApp (here in Europe the primary way of communicating with people you actually know), Google maps etc. - I have yet to find a way around this. If any smartphone developers can release a phone without a browser (and no, deleting my browser hasn't worked so far) and just the basic apps like WhatsApp and utility apps then I am all ears.
