I feel the trail boss should be able to be optioned like the Z71. I like that you can get a basic off road truck but there needs to be something in-between the trail boss and ZR2. A Z71 with the trail boss equipment would be perfect for a lot of people.

That’s where the Canyon AT4 sits, Trail Boss equipment with Z71 luxuries… problem is, it’s barely any cheaper than a Colorado ZR2, which gets the Z71 goodies anyways.

I'd want a trailboss option with front lockers and heated seats. Live in quebec, need the seats due to winter and the lockers for going up north. Weekends in winter and 1 week out of 2 in summer I'm in the woods, need both lockers. The F-150 trucks are just too big.

I agree. I don't like major options like heated seats being locked behind the high level trims. My LT trail boss Silverado has heated seats and steering wheel and a bunch of other goodies and it's still below the LTZ (similar spot in the lineup as the 23 Colorado Trail Boss)

It pains me to say this after 35 years of bad experiences and hate for GM products, but I really like the direction they've been going with their trucks lately. The new Colorado looks fantastic and has nice equipment. The Silverado ZR2 is sweet, and they're investing in new V8 gas and I-6 diesel engines. Well done GM, well done. To hell with EV tech.

Ironically, this is GM’s pattern. They are run by accountants and marketing “experts”. By the time they understand what the market wants it’s too late and they miss the mark. Example? The best years of the hummer H3 and H3T were in the middle of the Great Recession. They waited too long to build the Alpha versions and BOOM bankrupt. Now they are releasing these awesome trucks….oh the Colorado shared a platform with the H3….hmm if we have a major recession in 2023 my guess is GM will kill off all of these Trail Boss and ZR2 trims because of “low sales”

Same - I love love the trail boss look, but lacking the heat seats and steering (i think) and a BIG ONE -- lacking articulating steering wheel led me to Z71. Plus, I'm a sucker for that interior Z71 seat stitching - looks very nice. Also, I'm betting the Z71 gets better gas mileage because of the lower stance and let's be honest - I'm going to use my truck 99.9% of the time as an on-road daily-driver to work.

Here's my take. The Trail Boss is an off-road configured Work Truck positioned in the market for the no-frills buyer. That positioning matches well to Chevrolet's value leader role. If you want that same level of off-road performance, with the expected creature comforts and conveniences, you're really in the GMC Canyon AT4 market. That seems to be the sweet spot for me; the balance of towing and payload with off-road ability in a package I can be comfortable in on 3-4 week long excursions.
@justinboucher5923
@justinboucher5923 Жыл бұрын
The problem I have is I want the AT4 interior with the Colorado trail boss everything else :) The GMC Canyon face is just ugly. They really tried hard to mess that up. Reminds me of the fail on the HD Silverado until the recent refresh which didn't take long. I bet the Canyon gets a facial update in 2-3 years max. The Colorados look great.

Except the Canyon AT4 costs as much as the Coloardo ZR2, the GMC tax has gotten huge in recent years. For the price that GM wants for these trucks they all should have "luxury" features. They just love to nickle and dime the hell out of their customers. That G80 needs to be retired. It's kick in is terrible for control. If GM wants to be taken seriously after the disaster that was the last gen Colorado for reliability, they need to put a 5 year 100K mile bumper to bumper warranty on them. That said, the trucks look good and have good engines on paper.

If I could get a larger fuel tank, the Z71 would be my choice. As someone who tows a 4,000 pound trailer, the small tank means low range. Fuel economy on these turbo 4 cylinders tends to drop almost to half stated MPG. Trail Boss needs LED headlights. Nitro Yellow is HOT!!

Midsize truck fuel economy without a diesel is laughable, My V6 Tacoma is barely more fuel efficient than a full size, can get 22-23mpg in optimal conditions, and even a mild headwind can drop it to 15-16mpg.

In any non-EV truck our company gets, we always put in a 50 U.S. Gallon (190 litres) or even a 100 Gallon (380 litres) auxilliary fuel tank which also have an add-on fuel pump nozzle which lets us pump gasoline or diesel into another truck or UTV/SxS. The KEY ISSUE is getting the in-cabin fuel-gauge and auto-tank-switch which lets you draw from the main tank or the in-bed auxilliary tank as soon as a pre-set level on either is reached (usually 5 or 10 litres as the limit before automatic tank switch-over!) On a fully-loaded-with-camp-gear Ford Ranger Lariat with 32 inch M/T tires, while having the 50 gallon in-bed auxilliary tank where 190 litres of Gasoline is 312 lbs or 141 kg in weight, usually gets us 16 litres per 100 km fuel economy (14.7 mpg) when off-road in severe terrain. This gives us over 1180 KM of extra range or about ANOTHER 683 miles over the normal tank's 200 miles of range in severe and steep terrain. That combined 883 miles of driving range on the worst rainy/muddy/snowy Western Canada mountain roads is more than good enough driving range for us during our work and weekend off-road fun times. On sunny and dry days you can get almost 1000 miles (1600 km) of driving range on off-road packed gravel terrain. That is the same distance driving completely off-road from the Southern US Border near San Diego to the Oregon State border on one single fill-up while driving ONLY on off-road FSR sand/rock/mud/gravel roads! THAT is a looooooong camping trip that could take a whole week to do, so getting an in-bed auxilliary fuel tank is A GOOD BUY! I personally like the Trax-4 50 Gallon Tank from Transfer Flow which fits under most tonneau covers and canopies. It's about $1700 USD which is a bit expensive BUT it has EVERYTHING you need in a proper auxilliary fuel tank system. It even has an app you can download to keep track of all your fuel use on your smartphone or tablet! V

Excellent review guys. Just finished watching Stevens review on Truck King where they actually took out a work truck for a drive. I have to say the trail boss is the best deal out of the lineup, but they need to include heated seats. That's unacceptable at that price point. Love the new look and I think GM is going in the right direction. Let's see when the new Tacoma comes out, and the new Ford Ranger. That will be a great comparison.

@Millerbros3 Yes but that increases the price based on the package and it will no longer be the great deal that it is on a basic level. It needs to be standard. That's pretty basic even on Corolla's and Hyundai's and Kia's. Even on their economy cars with the mid grade trim level.

That is pretty normal for automatic lockers when you are dangling a wheel in the air. Off road mode on the Colorado disables rear wheel traction control, so you don't get the brake based torque vectoring to soften the engagement of the auto locker. The only auto lockers that engage smoothly without TC assistance are Gerotors and I'm not sure you can even get them anymore (they came on certain years of the 2nd gen Grand Cherokee).

I really would have liked the extra width and 1" height the Trail Boss haves over the Z71 but I just could not get past the cheap looking black plastic wheel opening molding. Why GM couldn't color coat to match the truck is beyond me. Since I live in NM just had to have ventilated seats so I picked up the Z71 in Red without the wheel opening moldings. The cost obviously was a little more then the trail boss but sill a whole bunch less then the Canyon which I don't really understand. The Colorado is a nice truck but I still love my H2 SUT with its 6.2l V8 over the mouse 4 cylinder engine. If GM would do a little tweaking (and a V6 maybe with a turbo) it would be the perfect little truck. Ask me what I think after 5 years or so. lol

There are several things the Colorado and Canyon are lacking... Especially for the price range. No HomeLink No powered rear window? No sunroof (earlier versions) No remote start No good fuel economy? (Especially out of the 4 cylinder) Now to throw on No heated seats No Bose No diesel No V6 No V8 I do still love the new look, but to spend over $40K and not get these things??? RIDICULOUS!!! If there's any major nitpick, its the controls all being in the radio. Traction control, window lockout, and most importantly, headlights. These controls have been commonplace in GM trucks for about 15 years now, and I see no reason to depart from that.

It should be illegal to put halogens on a vehicle now. It’s 2023. It’s borderline unsafe to have halogens. And with the price of these trucks, it’s just disrespectful to have halogens. A $20k corolla comes standard with LED headlights. Step up the game, GM.

If the trail boss had front lockers and that supper low lip removed and the option of just heated seats, it would ve my go too truck 1 billion % but here in quebec, I need heated seats and the front locker is for when I go up north into the woods all year long for the weekends.
@Skraals

@Tfl_off_road I'm shocked my comment was seen! Alas, I live in quebec and pur winters kinda of suck, and roads and infrastructure also leaves much to be desired in the maintenance department lmao. Summer I'm up north 1 week out of two, but in the winter I go up north 1 weekend out of two. Those front lockers are necessary for me and a full size truck is just to big to go where I need to go. The heated seats is rather frustrating to be blocked off, even as an option from the trail boss and is only offered on the two highest end trims. I know KIA and others aren't necessarily trucks but their SUVs lower trims, if not mistaken, give you the option for heated seats. The chevy colorado isn't cheap here in quebec, the least I'd expect is heated seats at least due to our climate and the high cost of the trucks. It be nice to find a mid-size truck with front and rear lockers with some minimal quality of life comfort yet nothing to expensive or with insane tech and prices.

No way a truck with a Z71 badge on it should have 20" rims. Like Andre said, it was originally an extra off-road package on the LT package in the 90s with an extra lift and the electronic transfer case. I don't think anybody who actually wants to go off-roading would want to put 20" rims on their off-road vehicle. If you want 20" rims, they should be on a LT package for the mall crawlers out there. Of course, I don't think any factory truck should come with 20" rims though.

I just "built" a Trail Boss on GM Canada's site and find it shocking that heated seats aren't even an option, let alone a heated steering wheel. with -40 winters up here in Saskatchewan this truck is a no go, very disappointing from GM. 55k for a stripped down truck.

Ok so the question is, can the fancy new Z71 keep up to a new Trail Boss? So my answer with an educated guess is. While off road, all things being equal? Tires are what will make all the difference in the world! The 20” wheels and tires will be useless off road, no matter the tires used.
