It pains me to say this after 35 years of bad experiences and hate for GM products, but I really like the direction they've been going with their trucks lately. Ironically, this is GM’s pattern. They are run by accountants and marketing “experts”. By the time they understand what the market wants it’s too late and they miss the mark. Example? The best years of the hummer H3 and H3T were in the middle of the Great Recession. They waited too long to build the Alpha versions and BOOM bankrupt. Now they are releasing these awesome trucks….oh the Colorado shared a platform with the H3….hmm if we have a major recession in 2023 my guess is GM will kill off all of these Trail Boss and ZR2 trims because of “low sales”

Here's my take. The Trail Boss is an off-road configured Work Truck positioned in the market for the no-frills buyer. That positioning matches well to Chevrolet's value leader role. If you want that same level of off-road performance, with the expected creature comforts and conveniences, you're really in the GMC Canyon AT4 market. That seems to be the sweet spot for me; the balance of towing and payload with off-road ability in a package I can be comfortable in on 3-4 week long excursions.

The problem I have is I want the AT4 interior with the Colorado trail boss everything else :) The GMC Canyon face is just ugly. They really tried hard to mess that up. That being said, I just went to the Chevy build and price and was at 48K for the same features, plus a few more than my 2021 F150 regular cab short box that I ordered and paid a little over 40K for with incentives (XL, 4x4, 5.0 V8, tow package with brake controller, snow plow prep package, BLISS, 360 degree camera system, 3.73 rear locker, spray in bed liner, tie down hooks and a soft bed cover. Ford Rocks when it comes to stand alone options across trim levels). To be fair and completely honest, I ordered the truck just before the pandemic blew up and Ford honored the pre-pandemic build and price when it showed up. If I backed out of the deal the dealer could have sold it for much more. Kudo's to them for honoring the deal. With a 122 inch wheelbase that little F150 will go almost anywhere a current "midsize" truck will and specs out with a 1,785 pound payload. Damn, truck prices have gone nuts in just a few years! I dig this mid size truck and would buy it, but not for close to 50K. Even pricing a Trail Boss with minimal options was 45K. If I could get a larger fuel tank, the Z71 would be my choice. As someone who tows a 4,000 pound trailer, the small tank means low range. Fuel economy on these turbo 4 cylinders tends to drop almost to half stated MPG. Trail Boss needs LED headlights. Nitro Yellow is HOT!!
@mrvwbug4423 Жыл бұрын
Midsize truck fuel economy without a diesel is laughable, My V6 Tacoma is barely more fuel efficient than a full size, can get 22-23mpg in optimal conditions, and even a mild headwind can drop it to 15-16mpg.
@StarGateSG7 Жыл бұрын
In any non-EV truck our company gets, we always put in a 50 U.S. Gallon (190 litres) or even a 100 Gallon (380 litres) auxilliary fuel tank which also have an add-on fuel pump nozzle which lets us pump gasoline or diesel into another truck or UTV/SxS. The KEY ISSUE is getting the in-cabin fuel-gauge and auto-tank-switch which lets you draw from the main tank or the in-bed auxilliary tank as soon as a pre-set level on either is reached (usually 5 or 10 litres as the limit before automatic tank switch-over!) On a fully-loaded-with-camp-gear Ford Ranger Lariat with 32 inch M/T tires, while having the 50 gallon in-bed auxilliary tank where 190 litres of Gasoline is 312 lbs or 141 kg in weight, usually gets us 16 litres per 100 km fuel economy (14.7 mpg) when off-road in severe terrain. This gives us over 1180 KM of extra range or about ANOTHER 683 miles over the normal tank's 200 miles of range in severe and steep terrain. That combined 883 miles of driving range on the worst rainy/muddy/snowy Western Canada mountain roads is more than good enough driving range for us during our work and weekend off-road fun times. On sunny and dry days you can get almost 1000 miles (1600 km) of driving range on off-road packed gravel terrain. That is the same distance driving completely off-road from the Southern US Border near San Diego to the Oregon State border on one single fill-up while driving ONLY on off-road FSR sand/rock/mud/gravel roads! THAT is a looooooong camping trip that could take a whole week to do, so getting an in-bed auxilliary fuel tank is A GOOD BUY! I personally like the Trax-4 50 Gallon Tank from Transfer Flow which fits under most tonneau covers and canopies. It's about $1700 USD which is a bit expensive BUT it has EVERYTHING you need in a proper auxilliary fuel tank system. It even has an app you can download to keep track of all your fuel use on your smartphone or tablet! V

@RidersInBlack Жыл бұрын
@Millerbros3 Yes but that increases the price based on the package and it will no longer be the great deal that it is on a basic level. It needs to be standard. That's pretty basic even on Corolla's and Hyundai's and Kia's. Even on their economy cars with the mid grade trim level.

Heated seats would be a waste of money for me. I would never use them.

Love the looks of the new Colorado. (I guess the are selling at least one in puke yellow). I agree with you that Wheels and tires and ground clearance of the Trailboss is the way to go. But living in CO I’m not going with heated seats, a sunroof, or automatic climate control. Chevy has really gotten off track with their new trim levels.

I'd love to have LED's in my TrailBoss. I can't believe they aren't standard across the line. Especially when the fancy screens are available in every trim level.

Ive had 5 GM 4x4 . The 4x4 push button system did not work on the 2 1998 , 2001 ZR2 Blazers nor the 2006 GM Sierra Z71 ( which I still own ) . But the comfort was very nice . Im hoping that GM has improved on that problem.

The trail boss needs front and rear lockers. Yes the mustard yellow will sell, but the blue is the show piece. GM needs to merge more mechanical ability, in there 4x4 . The convenience package is nice. Can’t wait to see what the canyon has for us.

The Z71 (blue truck)had a pretty violent response engaging portions of that up hill climb. Bet it was fun to hang out with fellow journalists. Already caught this event from another source. But they did not point out anyone and say hi to them. lol
@mrvwbug4423 Жыл бұрын
That is pretty normal for automatic lockers when you are dangling a wheel in the air. Off road mode on the Colorado disables rear wheel traction control, so you don't get the brake based torque vectoring to soften the engagement of the auto locker. The only auto lockers that engage smoothly without TC assistance are Gerotors and I'm not sure you can even get them anymore (they came on certain years of the 2nd gen Grand Cherokee).

Had the last gen Colorado. It’s too bad GM didn’t put an actual locker in it the rear of the Trail Boss. Minor cost and in keeping with the intent of the truck.

I'd like to know if GM improved the rubber boots for this new generation's IFS.... I had a "17 ZR2, and the shaft boots on that gen Colorado were known to tear when off roading.
@jonathanfreeman7761 Жыл бұрын
Ordered a ZR2 and found out 360 cameras are NOT available at this time and GM has no information on when they will be. They are part of the technology package and that is the only way to get them. Unfortunately After ordering a 21 Tahoe that never got built I canceled this order for the Colorado. I had hoped GM was getting better about communicating with their customers but my dealer could not get any answer for me either.
@mrvwbug4423 Жыл бұрын
The either/or on the Z71 vs Trail Boss is a deal breaker for me, I want the extra off road goodies, but I don't want the stripped out base model truck. My 2019 Tacoma has the premium interior and TRD off road package, plus the adaptive cruise that is an expensive option on most trim levels of the Colorado. The Tacoma also has a 32 degree approach angle, rear locker and more ground clearance than the Trail Boss without a lift.

Optioned as high-output after you buy it, at the dealership? Sooo, they detune the engine then sell you the electronic fix? I really like this truck, but what sort of marketing games is GM playing with this engine? Am I wrong to think this is weird? Let me know.

Once again Andre’ good job. I’ll admit I am like you, even now I have a 2019 WT 4x4, V6, I found new with all the options and packages available. But fairly disappointed a WT is not available with high/low range, with 16” wheels. As a blank canvas to set up as we wish. As I’d rather put the extra money a Trail Boss costs into real suspension enhancements and not just spacers. Plus there are better tires than DuraMax. As for the Z71, that’s a nice package, but do they all come with off road useless 20” wheels? That requires expensive tires!

If the trail boss had front lockers and that supper low lip removed and the option of just heated seats, it would ve my go too truck 1 billion % but here in quebec, I need heated seats and the front locker is for when I go up north into the woods all year long for the weekends.
@Skraals Жыл бұрын
@Tfl_off_road I'm shocked my comment was seen! Alas, I live in quebec and pur winters kinda of suck, and roads and infrastructure also leaves much to be desired in the maintenance department lmao. Summer I'm up north 1 week out of two, but in the winter I go up north 1 weekend out of two. Those front lockers are necessary for me and a full size truck is just to big to go where I need to go. The heated seats is rather frustrating to be blocked off, even as an option from the trail boss and is only offered on the two highest end trims. I know KIA and others aren't necessarily trucks but their SUVs lower trims, if not mistaken, give you the option for heated seats. The chevy colorado isn't cheap here in quebec, the least I'd expect is heated seats at least due to our climate and the high cost of the trucks. It be nice to find a mid-size truck with front and rear lockers with some minimal quality of life comfort yet nothing to expensive or with insane tech and prices.
