It's so annoying when people say that the civic is weak, and that 170 hp isn't anything... No shit. Nobody said it was powerful. The civic's not trying to be a race car nor is anyone driving it claiming it is. It's an inline 4 with good mpg, a good safety rating, and 5 seats... So stop comparing it to 2 seater V8 sports cars.. It's like yelling at a middle schooler for not doing college level work. Ffs.

I wish there was a fucking like button for your comment. it's the most honestly and true statement ever made. people really need to stop doing that stupid shit. it's a civic. why is anyone comparing it to v8 lol.

it's only funny when the people in these civics try and race them like their fast enouph to keep up with a 2 seater v8. I only make fun of the drivers not the cars. although I'm an American muscle fan I love all cars for what they are. I drive a 425 rwhp 2012 ram and love racing anyone even when I lose. it's all fun to me win or lose. I'm just happy people like to play around regardless of what they drive.

Is not us comparing it, is them with their lambo doors, and and racing stripes and stupid big spoilers, trying to show off every time they see a nice sports car, the civic as a stand alone is pretty good but is them drivers who ruin it.

+Monica Schwartz +ChrisFix If you haven't used it, you wouldn't know. I have been using them all along (if a different brand) and I could feel the difference that it make in acceleration. Using a dyno will only verify this. Because if someone just tell you about this without any tests, you'd be sceptical. As to your question. Not testing different formulae of this additive does not make it illegit. Doing multiple brands tests will only prove one is better than the other, that's all.

Have you considered testing the long-run harm it can do? I'm no car expert, but after buying my brand new car in 2007 4-cylinder to save on gas prices) , all I did was use additives to boost fuel economy. It was rated at 25/35 MPG (city/highway). A full tank was ~12 gallons so the best it would do was ~420 miles on full tank. With additives, it was at 500+ miles when the low fuel light would come up, so it did work to give me better MPG. After 6 months of doing this, the engine felt like it was stalling after exiting highway speeds. Dealership did not find anything. My commute was mostly highway (used to live in California), so I would feel the car like it was stalling constantly.

The ultimate confirmation of results would have been to run it on the dyno one more time after replacing the doped gas with clean gas. If the power and torque drop back to levels similar to the first set of baseline results, then the additive absolutely is the cause of power increase.
@zachmiller9175
@zachmiller9175 6 жыл бұрын
I have the same car with some basic mods and a tune, sometimes I put in Lucas octane boost and it definitely feels a bit faster and more responsove, I'd guess the reason these additives work well on these engines is because they have pretty high compression from factory and the additives increase the knock resistance and the ecu advances timing a bit to take advantage of it. Just my guess.

Might sound dumb, but a lot of honda guys run open header. You should dyno the civic si with and without open header to see if it makes a difference. There was a big debate about it on the 8th gen forum not to long ago. But i dont think anyone did a dyno. That video would get you a lot more subscribers. If you do it try with the axel back off as well, i see a lot of people say that helps increase power as well.

For anyone curious as to why he 2nd pull tends to have the highest result, as seen here, It's usually down to temperatures. Engine and gearbox oil offer less resistance at their optimal temperatures than when cooler. Went to a dyno day a few months back but had to wait for a while before my go so the gearbox oil was cold by the time I got to go. Across my 3 runs that made about a 10% difference 1st to 3rd.

Vtec actually steals 40hp until all valves are activated to improve fuel economy at low rpm.
@vegaquarker
@vegaquarker 8 жыл бұрын
+Eaglebeak 117 whos talking about adding fuel? You've got to learn more about single and multivalve engines. Single valve engines have more air speed at lower rpm, thus better air quantity on cylinder per cycle because of air inertia, and even better if there is a resonnant intake system for low rpm, but single valve systems top out early, so thats why multivalve reach higher rpm, usually multivalve engines are meant for power, while single valve engines are efficient and give torque at low rpm. Vtec trys to join both advantages on a single engine to improve fuel economy and give good torque at low rpm and give power ar high rpm, but usually at a cost of complexity and "unevenness" throug the rpm band, thats why it pulls that much when vtec activates the second valve. It doesn't even matter if the engine is inyected on the intake or the head at hight pressure, its a matter of air flow. Check out exup valve on 5 valve per cylinder engines.

+pollorobot69 Both are based on 1969 Fiat's patent (variable valve timing) the VTEC is a more complicated mechanical variable timing system. For the story the first VVT system used by a fuel injected Alfa Romeo Spider 2000 in 1980.
@youtang
@youtang 6 жыл бұрын
The reason why it works is the boost in octane. Higher octane gas is more resistant to spontaneous combustion, knock. So with the higher octane the car's computer can advance the timing more aggressively when the knock sensor sees that there is less or no knock. Like older cars with distributors, you can manually advance the spark timing for more power and better response. But, it increases the chance of knock and engine failure.

ChrisFix what would happen if you put more in it then it suggests? also can you mix it with an octane booster or is that what this basically is?
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 9 жыл бұрын
carson phillips Nothing would happen. How it works is it is a catalyst that maximizes the potential energy in the gas and converts it into kinetic energy. Basically, it is making the most of the gas that is in there already. It is not an octane booster. If you add too much, you are just wasting money. I have no clue what would happen with an octane booster.

You should test e15, e10, and straight gas on a dyno and compare power potential for each fuel.
@richard3422
@richard3422 5 жыл бұрын
That's a tough one to do because the amount of ethenol can vary greatly. E10 contains UP TO 10% ethenol, but doesn't have to have that much in it. E85 can have any amount, up to 85% ethenol, to be considered E85. That's why vehicles that can handle E85 have sensors to monitor the ethenol level of the fuel and adjust accordingly. Every time you fill up with a fuel containing ethenol, the amount will be different as well as the moisture content. Ethenol additives increase the octane rating of the fuel because it's not as volatile under high pressure. But it will also eat away at many O-rings and fittings used in most vehicles. Ethenol is also prone to absorbing moisture from the air. Exposure to high humidity environments can allow for added water to the fuel just as much as losing ethenol content when exposed to dry environments.

As a rule, alcohol (ethanol) will increase horsepower, but at the expense of economy. The stoichiometric ratio for gasoline is ~14.7:1. When you add ethanol, the air/fuel ratio decreases, because ethanol has more hydrogen, and less carbon. Being able to consume more fuel for the same amount of air makes more power, but you have to add more fuel to get it. Fuel is hydrogen and carbon. One atom of carbon consumes 2 atoms of oxygen. It takes 2 hydrogen atoms to consume a single atom of oxygen. That's why you get more power from alcohol, but you have to use so much more of it.

The issue I have with the results (and I haven't even gotten past you taking it out for a ride after adding the CleanBoost Maxx) is that you added so little to the "tank" via the funnel that what didn't end up sticking to the funnel and the fuel filler tube leading down to the tank probably wasn't enough to effect the gasoline at all. Also, in order to make the test accurate, you would need to know the tempature of the engine before the initial Dyno test, so you could allow the engine to cool down to that tempature before the first Dyno test after taking it out for the drive.

You should show the cam timing and injection timing in this test to show that the timing changers based on the detonation in the cylinders which leads to advanced timing allowing more air in for compression to make more power. Meaning any older cars that do not have VCT, VVT, VVTI, TI-VCT etc wont benefit from just putting this in the tank unless the fuel is to low in Octane rating causing detonation. Would love to see the changers in cam timing and injection timing.

While I'm not discrediting your findings or method there is Somethings you may not have considered. While coolant temperatures may have been the same, the more you run/drive the car will increase oil, transmission fluid, and axle grease temps aiding with reduced friction. Also the axle to dump angle and steering wheel position/angle can play a part in adding friction and decreasing the ability to transfer the engines output to the dyno. Good video tho, was interesting and the increase in consistency was a nice unexpected result

I know this video is old and people have probably said this already, but, I just have to mention something. The best way to mix the additive you put in with the gas that's already in the engine, and to know you most likely have the fuel with the additive being fed into the cylinders, is to petty much have the car with no fuel in it. Maybe like 2 gallons, at most. That's when you go to a gas station, put the additive in, fill the car with like another 2 or 3 gallons of gas to mix it in, then drive it around for 30 minutes plus to make sure the additive is flowing through the lines. I personally have the gallon to additive ratio a lot more concentrated, when I put additives in my fuel (which is rare. I can't even remember the last time I did that.).

I for one will definitely say octane boosters definitely do work, as long as you use a reputable brand like royal purple maxboost and your engine is able to take advantage of the extra octane like if it’s a turbo charged or supercharged engine.
@DaveDuzzit
@DaveDuzzit 5 жыл бұрын
This works because the additive acts like octane booster, which not only creates more power, but also cools the cylinders and reduces heat soak. That's why you didn't lose power with the additive.
@richard3422
@richard3422 5 жыл бұрын
Higher octane doesn't give more power. The octane level tells how resistant the fuel is to pre-ignition. Higher compression engines require higher octane to prevent the fuel from spontaneous combustion before the piston is in the proper location. High octane does nothing of benefit for an ICE with a typical 8:1 compression.
@DaveDuzzit
@DaveDuzzit 5 жыл бұрын
Richard Nettles that’s not true. Octane additives like ethynol create more expansion in the fuel, and yes is less likely to pre-ignite. The difference between 87 and 91 fuel may be very minimal, like 2% gains in power. This is due to the cars computer not tuning more fuel for higher octane. However, when a car is equipped with a flex fuel system, and runs E85 ethynol, you can see some serious HP gains. This is why cars like the koenigsegg agera rs makes 1100hp on 91 and 1500hp on E85.
@richard3422
@richard3422 5 жыл бұрын
Do some research on the purpose of octane ratings and the theory of how an internal combustion engine operates. It's not that the engine is gaining power from the higher octane, but the engine is losing power with lower octane fuel because it can't handle the pressure. The lower octane fuel causes predetonation, which causes a loss of power.
@DaveDuzzit
@DaveDuzzit 5 жыл бұрын
@@richard3422 Almost every modern engine is very high compression. Well over 8:1, some are now using 14:1 even. All of these new engines have knock sensors, which ran with lower grade fuel, even if the cars manual says it can run 87, will detect knocking and change timing to reduce damaging effects. Some cars will even see 1sec faster 0-60 times with 91 over 87, even though the cars manual says it can run 87. You can take it a step further by running 93, which will have the same effect at high RPM, and show positive gains on a dyno, especially in a vtec, or turbocharged motor. You even said it yourself, lower octane causes reduction in power, so raising it can increase power, to a certain amount. You can't just go throw E85 in a 87-93 rated car, but with the correct modifications, you can see even more gains from E85 (108 octane).

My only criticism would be for the amount of fuel additive you put in the tank being so small surely all you would have done is coat the pipe leading to the tank and very little supplement would have actually reached the tank therefore the fuel supplement that coated the fuel pipe leading to the tank would have not actually mixed with the fuel and would have dried as vapour. The second realisation is that when you add any type of octane boost fuel supplement or anything that change the chemical composition of the fuel it can take a while for the ECU to finally adjust to the new mix doesn't always happen straight away way the ECU or engine management system has to learn the new fuel composition and adjust fuel air ratio ignition timing etc to run the engine at best optimum rating taking into account general wear and tear of engine. So while your graphs and test does show there is an increase in torque and horsepower I also noticed there's a slight change in humidity would this make a difference I don't know but there are too many variable factors to take into account when dyno testing , just to see the difference within 5 horsepower because you had an additive. all the tests I have read with these that have done in a more scientific and professional ie in a full on lab experiment taking most of these so-called variations into account have proven that if a car is designed to run depending on its area America Europe China etc on a certain type of fuel then adding fuel enhancing boosters to increase horsepower or octane rating which therefore in theory increases horsepower all the ECU does is a just adjust and compensates back to the original settings you don't actually gain anything except a slight increase in fuel economy as you're now burning less fuel for the same engine output. if however the car is a high-performance car that is designed to run and has the ability to retune itself at a system-level ( ecu )to take advantage of a higher octane or higher performance grade fuel but will also run on lower grade fuel then yes a fuel supplement or octane boost will and can increase horsepower if you're using standard fuel and you're bringing it up to super unleaded or whatever you have in your country by using the fuel supplement

TRX450R Vlogger This is exactly how it works (from their site): the product is based on a nano-technology that introduces a small amount of catalysts into the fuel, where it reduces the ignition threshold, so that more of the fuel’s chemical energy is released into kinetic energy at the crankshaft. Less of the fuel is wasted as heat and the result is more power.

Take note of the big gains in HorsePower even at lower revs!!! At 2500 RPM, with CleanBoost Maxx it had around 10!! HP more than WITHOUT CleanBoost Max (~15% HP gain). That's pretty amazing! My car only has 60HP. My car really could use a little more HP haha

I have seen the same and bigger jumps on the same dyno, same car, same day, same and slightly different times. Standard error shows it to be too close to be statistically supported.

I appreciate you doing this. I see a lot of people are joking about it, but I was seriously curious if these octane boosters really work.

Yo should test a few different brands of fuel additives to see which one adds the most horsepower and torque. That would be very interesting to see

Took a trip from Ohio to Florida in a 2005 Infiniti g35. I bought 6 bottles of Lucas fuel system cleaner, the big ones, and used it with every fill up. Tank was empty before I left, so first fill was in Ohio, filled up 3 times on the way there, averaged 260 a tank down, and got 310 for the two on the way back. Not a noticeable gain in power, but fuel economy was worth the extra 6$ a bottle.
