Dr. Craig Mahoney discusses if a meniscus tear can heal on its own?
"Most meniscus tears do not heal on their own, especially in adults. As you get older, the meniscus doesn't really have a capacity to heal on its own. It doesn't have a great blood supply. So, in terms of waiting for a meniscus tear to heal, that's not typically what we recommend. Meniscus tears in older patients actually become less symptomatic in most cases. So, an acute meniscus tear can be quite painful, but in people say in my age group, you don't necessarily have to operate on it right away. You can wait it out with injections, use anti-inflammatories, try physical therapy and ultimately many of those meniscus tears will become less symptomatic.
Tears that cause locking, catching, repeated pain with certain activities - those are the tears that need to be treated surgically and it's a very easy fix at that point. We go in and actually take out the torn pieces of the meniscus. We smooth out the remaining meniscal tissue and typically that addresses patients concerns and helps them feel better very quickly."
