Thank you so much for this video. It is the most comprehensive explanation on all types of meniscus tears. I am 66 and tore mine 5 months ago. MRI confirmed tear without arthritis. Have continued with the exercises but had a relapse in December due to one exercise received from the Physio not being appropriate. Once swelling went down resumed again and it has since been improving week by week. Have a consultation arranged with an orthopedic surgeon and physio at the end of February but hope to avoid any such surgical intervention . Many thanks

You only listed sports injuries and age-related meniscus damage, but you should have also included auto accidents, which is how I got a lateral tear in one knee and a medial tear in the other knee.

7 months after the collision I was in, I’m still confused whether I should get surgery on both knees that still cause level 2-5 pain constant with intermittent shooting pain. My meniscus are still attached. The Dr isn’t communicating what and where the repairs would be exactly and if the tears are likely to heal over time without surgery.

@TrutherThinkTank I'm having similar issues but only one knee. Are you having any physical therapy in the meantime? I'm doing all this without an attorney and thought the medical community would be more authoritative. But it seems even they may need an attorney or us to tell them what to do. It's quite odd. I just want to be better.

This is the best and most comprehensive explanation I’ve experienced. I’m 71 and damaged my knee nine weeks ago. I had done a gym session earlier in the day, didn’t notice anything untoward but sometime during the night/early hours in bed, I awoke in extreme (10/10) pain. I thing I twisted my knee turning in bed having perhaps weakened it earlier in the gym? A scan, x-Ray and MRI (on NHS) three weeks later showed fraying of the meniscus due to age degeneration. My fault for delaying diagnosis as I thought I knew everything and that it would heal quickly. Anyway, upshot nine weeks later is that the pain has finally dissipated, I’m doing some light work in the gym - bike, rowing (10 mins each at light resistance) resistance machines and just this week some loose weights. I probably didn’t keep off it enough during the first crucial weeks so that has delayed improvement. I have no cartilage in the other knee following sports injury 45 years ago. I’m confident I’ll get back to how I was before the injury. Thank you both so much - I’ve learned a great deal. James

I am 27. Slightly above avg athlete. I do trail biking, basketball, and bowling. I hyperextened my right knee lifting something may 2022. I tried to avoid surgery for that. In that time i compensated heavily on my left knee and i ended up tearing that meniscus. I heard the pop when that happened. I tried to limit my activity but i continued to bowl here and there (probably made it worse). Started doing PT november of 2022 till may 2023 and didnt see any improvement. I think I waited to long to take action. I had a bucket handle tear in my medial meniscus got the repair in may 2023 and it failed 2 months later. This can be a devastating injury from personal experience.

How do I know if It’s in the red or white zone in terms of healing on its own without surgery? The reporter of the MRI also didn’t put the dimensions of the tear that I can see on my report.

I’m a mental health nurse. I have suffered with back problems for years and had spinal fusion, so rely on my knees as I can’t bend very far. Approx. 3 months ago after kneeling my right knee started to click every step I took and while laying in bed if I moved the knee. The clicking stopped after a couple of weeks and the pain/dull ache began on the inner part of my right knee. I went to urgent care and after a very quick examination said I have bone on bone arthritis. I’m waiting for a physio apt from work but it’s taking a while and I’m worried I’m doing more damage by walking on it. The pain ramped up tonight so not sure if I’ll make it to work tomorrow. Do you think it’s a meniscus tear or something more serious? I’m male, on the heavy side, 62, but my knees have been without issues apart from bursitis in my 20s. Many thanks.

I have questions. I have meniscus tear verified by MRI. What do I do if I aggravate the meniscus and have pain? How do I prevent aggravating the meniscus? Does the meniscus tear heal or repair if I practice physical therapy for long time like 3 months? What actions would aggravate the meniscus?
@CompletePhysio Жыл бұрын
Hi, Thank you for your questions. If you have aggravated your knee pain, you should rest it and ice it, and seek advice on taking appropriate pain relief medication. If your symptoms don't start to settle after a few days then I would suggest that you see professional advice from a Physiotherapist, sports doctor or your GP. Activities that tend to aggravate the meniscus are things like deep squats, twisting and turning movements and side to side or change of direction activities. A torn meniscus can settle an heal in time, with patience and physiotherapy - 3-6 months is a good timeframe, but it depends on a number of factors and every individual is different. I hope that helps. You can find further information and advice on our website complete-physio.co.uk/what-is-a-meniscal-tear/

Hi guys, the doctor that examined my MRI says I have a displaced bucket-handle tear of the lateral meniscus with intercondylar displacement. Noticed my knee was hurting after I was involved in a crazy car accident in February 2024. I am afraid of surgery as I am 27 so not sure as I do not have any pain and even when the surgeon checked out my knee he tried all sorts of angles and I didn’t feel pain and not locking up. He suggested surgery. I am very scared as surgery is booked in October 2024 but I dont know if I should go ahead with it as after surgery, my knee will never be 100% also worried about recovery as I am over weight so that does not help. Any suggestion guys as to which way to go would be of great help please Thank you!

I had a five year battle, just getting them to entertain an MRI and they even argued with me when I told them I had insurance. I had just turned 40 and had a specific tear sound / experience and the 25 year old physio did no physical assessment, just told me I was old and she signed me off. I asked and asked many many times if it could be repaired? I was told bluntly it can’t be repaired. So people who have insurance and approach a GP are told no can’t be repaired. Even the two consultants I went to, we’re not interested in repairs. Iv asked about cartilage farming, and stem cell treatment from the hip bone, and nobody is interested in this?
