I was 4 when we got our first dog (she ended up being the most chill loving dog) but I have a strong memory of my dad telling me we needed to shelter her to make sure she wouldn't bite anyone (never happened once) but I think it was so important for me to hear, especially given the dogs we've had over the years

I've worked in a veterinary clinic and seen dogs be put down and the most heartbreaking part is always seeing that dog walk through the door with it's owner all happy and completely clueless of what's about to happen. Excited to meet new people not knowing that those people will be the one to end it's life moments later. That's why I beg of people to please not breed irresponsibily...

Exactly. I have a toy dachshund and people always ask if I’m going to breed him. The answer is no because he’s aggressive and that can definitely be passed down to the puppy. I’m clipping my dog in a few months. He is a year and half old

People see my dog and always think about how cute and tiny he is but he’s the biggest responsibility I have right now. It took a long time to train him to where he won’t bite or the non stop barking he did. Most people would’ve gotten rid of him but I rescued him from a box on the side of the road when was a month old. I signed up for the responsibility.

I kinda get it because I think his is a corso, but only experienced dog owners/handlers should get / breed that breed since they have a tendency to be aggressive and hard to handle. I don’t really see the point in neutering a dog and I don’t understand why neutering would help his situation but what I do know is that in America there are huge overbreeding problems and people who destroy the gen pool so his dog probably shouldn’t breed that I agree with and he is way to immature/unreasonable he should learn how to actually care for a dog and train it Please correct me if anyone is wrong here or their is other factors that I am not getting (I am going to get a dog(most likely a collie or GMS/other herding breed) but I am not sure if I want to neuter I don’t necessarily want to breed my dog though i might consider it later. in my country there is no problem with overbreeding/stray dogs either. I found no real benefit to neuter other then reducing the dogs male behavior/will-to-wandering. their is no evidence that it reduced aggressive behavior, it does remove the chances of testicular cancer but increases other risk factors so their is no real health benefit. Only thing is you need to watch your dog when introducing it to now dogs since neutered dogs might not like intact dog and to avoid accidental litters)

Not sure if this matters but here is some more data if you care about that stuff This is the data I found based on my country From what I could find around 300 dogs get put down every year due to aggressive behavior/rescue dogs but not because they attacked anyone just hard to rehabilitate them and no one wants them and around 8300 animals mostly dogs/cats get put down every year for other reasons like bad health age or other reason like aggressive behaviors

It's unlikely you will be carefully controlling breeding to ensure good temperament, or genetic health, or taking back any of the puppies if the new owners can't handle them. You would become just yet another backyard breeder whose dogs end suffering for your mistakes. Leave it too the professionals. If Americans only left un-neutered dogs to the professional breeders then over-breeding wouldn't have been an issue, but lots of backyard breeders and people justifying letting their dogs run around un-neutered was how it eventually got to that state.

Among these people we have those who only care about themselves and the bigger nicer things they can get people will impulsively get things just because they wanted it in the moment or so they can say they have it or had it. It's easy come easy go and they put no thought on how it effects any except their gratification for however long. People will force down a meal that could have fed 3 or they will get the same meal eat a 3rd and throw the rest away in their mind it's all the same. Somebody's 5 year old kid will throw a fit because they want a puppy and they will run out and get one and the kid will get bored with it in a week and the parents didn't want it in the first place so they pretty much do it like the meal the will get rid of it or neglect it. If they get rid of it it's out of sight out of mind and they will just get another one if they want one later. People will be living in a place that dog's aren't allowed and get one anyway when they are told they can't have it they get rid of it it was fun while it lasted. We have a lot of people that let their morals erode these people will just throw garbage down and say someone is paid to clean that up. But don't get it twisted we have people that will give you the shirt off their back and people that will pick up that trash because it's the right thing to do. We as a people have given so much for what we have now. It just seems like in the last 15 years people have rapidly become cold selfish greedy and have a mentality like what can you do for me or what have you done for me and as bad as it hurts to see this. I know the good Outweigh the bad And people are taking in these unwanted dogs As fast as they can Some families have multiple. I am a proud American and I know that if it comes down to it if someone is in trouble there will be someone who is willing to risk it all to help a stranger if your home was on fire and your kid was in there someone would go in for them with no concern for them self. If you and your family were hungry another hungry person would give that meal for 3 to you and they would be full because you have something to eat. That's what America's about we have so many good people that when the time comes we will sacrifice everything for what's right even if it's for someone that is a complete stranger and that's the truth

If I had this guys mindset, I would have breed my dog too, now she is female, adorable, and has a great temper, and I also have so many people and friends who have said POINT BLANK to my face! That if my dog had pups they'd be first in line. BUT! I also know, if I stood at their door and said "here you go", they would immediately say "Oh I can't, I can't have a dog right now" or "I can't afford a dog right now" and "I already have too many dogs!". You can stay there and preach all you want that you have people that want "that kind of dog" and it will be easy to get rid of the whole litter, but YOU DON'T KNOW THAT! Do you have any idea how many dogs I've seen that I have said "I want it" and don't get?! Because I at least use my brain, and I know that right now, I can ONLY take care of the one I have.

My sister had the reverse problem: the breeder wanting her dog back due to how much patience and tolerance the dog had with my sister's kids. My sister declined since she did not want to start over with another puppy and quite possibly not be half as lucky.

I feel that people who want a dog say it out of whim and impulse, and they don't realize the needs of the dog until it's growing up and going through the typical puppy behavior. This is why people who wish to get a dog either from a breeder, shelter, friend, etc should DO their research or be given adequate information. You definitely did your part in not giving in!

Where I’m from it’s more like 90% of shelter dogs are bully breeds. We’ve tried for months to adopt a dog that was a good fit but unfortunately bullies are not due to apartments having weight and breed restrictions. I’m sooo glad he got neutered. Although it won’t help those shelter dogs right away at least it doesn’t worsen the problem.

he did not neuter him, someone updated: Update from the previous video about this guy: He never neutered his dog, he never trained his dog, and he never followed through with training. The dog a year later, UNNEUTERED, attacked and bit someone in a parking lot at the complex they lived in. The judge ordered the dog not only to be neutered but trained and taken from him for at least eighteen months. This guy never listened nor cared except about how much money he could make and how "cool" he looked. Google Presa Canario Casper to find out about this, that's how I found out.

Gi Gi I appreciate the advice but unfortunately the only dogs that were a good fit were from rescues that made it too difficult for us to adopt with their restrictions. The ones with lesser restrictions never had a small dog that wasn’t a senior. I know they deserve a chance but I wasn’t ready for a heartbreak like that. We ended up getting our dog from craigslist and we’re so grateful we waited she’s the best thing ever Unfortunately there’s way too many people who breed them for a quick buck. Not caring about vet care or where they go. Multiply that enough times over decades plus breed restrictions (usually based by appearance anyway) and you get this problem.

@Jayne Crafter still an issue... He could easily impregnant a female dog 'by accident' because he could honestly overpower any other dog.. It's very irrisponsible to not spay and neuter dogs and cats. And like the one professional trainer said, having a dog unneutered ends up giving the dog aggressive behaviors because of the added testostertone. If you don't plan to breed your dog (which you shouldn't unless your a professional breeder) then there's no reason not to neuter or spay your animal, period.

I can relate! I adopted 2 dogs from out of state just to not have a bully breed. You must understand how powerful they are. My dogs weigh 72 and 85 pounds now, and the two together are not as strong as a pit bull. These breeds are not to be taken lightly

@S cell You get what you pay for. If you want a healthy, mentally stable dog, it's gonna cost you more. But it'll be worth it. A serious breeder is a great resource for information, tips and tricks regarding the specific breed, which is great for first time owners. Your priorities shouldn't be getting a cheap dog, but getting a dog that suits you, your skill level and your lifestyle.

I think it could be helpful to let people like this (who want to breed their dogs but don't want the puppies to end up in shelters) to know that real, professional breeders will take any unwanted dog they create back into their care so their dogs never end up in the shelter. If Casper was bred and the bitch had 6 puppies and 4 prospective owners got in over their head because they weren't ready and/or the dogs inherited some of his behavioral issues--just how many Caspers is he willing to take back into his house if he has to? Can he deal with 2 or 3 or even more? The reality for those dogs would likely become return to the breeder and stay there or go to the shelter and be euthanized because of behavioral issues and the sheer lack of space to house more dogs.

Yes! A good breeder will take their dogs back, no questions asked, at any age. Some even rescue dogs of "their" breed and use their knowledge and facilities to rehabilitate them.

In some areas and with some breeds over-breeding and irresponsible breeding might not be much of an issue. Sometimes it might be in the best interest of the breed not to encourage spaying and neutering and the spay/neuter contract is there to benefit the breeder more than the breed. Of course, the opposite might also be true.

8:04 from here to where she stopped talking about it actually made me cry its so disappointing when a dog is just clueless and has no way to avoid them being 'put down'. I remember when my dog was put down because he was suffering and it was so sad. I wish for dogs to just naturally go by age... Not because of certain circumstances.

Same, we had to put down our dog because he was suffering too much already at that point, he was pretty old and would most likely not survive the surgery because of his age and weakness, the poor thing couldn't even move a inch from the pain, we had to force feed him since he wouldn't eat for himself and was so so weak... his last days were really heartbreaking, at least we were the with him at the end...

Before I owned my dog (pitbull), he was my sisters dog. She and her boyfriend had bred him twice and most of the puppies ended up in good homes, but we had also heard later down the road that a good portion of them were given to other people or had died. There's vet checkups, dog food, making sure that the mother is getting everything she needs. Also, there is getting the puppies papers and cost of delivering to the new owners and just so much. I never had to get any of my dogs fixed but.... they also never had that kind of energy. In fact, me and my mom joked that Guinea by the time he realized he had a pair he was in his seniors years and to slow to even chase the females. lol.

I think they are wonderful family guardians. They need a strong leader, but grow up awesome. As long as you have 2 acres or more completely fenced with 6.5 foot steel fencing that goes underground and kids over the age of 10 they are awesome. His dog is beautiful. My dog has beautiful colouring on him and because of that I've been told TWICE that people would be willing to breed their dog with him. Once was a family friend and once a neighbor that breeds jack russells. The family friend offered me pick of the litter and 50% of profits, AS WELL as a stud fee. But I said no. Because I have no clue where those pups would end up and I couldn't live with myself knowing they could be dead or in a shelter because I wanted some money. Please be responsible!!

I would've loved to breed my recently deceased labrador. He was so sweet and wonderful, that having another one like him would have been so great. However I had rescued him because someone didn't want him and dogs don't procreate like humans. Odds were that there would've been 5+ new dogs that I couldn't raise. Shea was neutered at 6mos and even though I wish I still had a piece of him still here, I know I made the right decision, not just for him but for all unloved dogs. Shea lived a long 14 years and was one of my bestest friends when I needed one.

The breeder I got my dog from would literally do anything for her puppies and takes them back at any point no matter what (which I obviously won't be doing) - I could tell she genuinely loved and cared for the breed and all her dogs which is why we decided to use her :) I do plan to rescue in the future but for my first dogs I wanted a pedigree so I was more likely to know the traits

Gina, there is no need to feel you have to explain why you got a dog from a good breeder. This idea that you should only get a dog from a shelter has gotten out of hand. Many people want and need a dog whose behavior and health they can predict. Bringing an unknown quantity into your home is a risk many people just won't take especially if they have children. I think that's fine, and I don't agree with the sentiment that buying a dog from a good breeder kills a shelter dog necessarily. Honestly, at my local shelter, unless it's a bully breed they pretty much all get adopted within a week. Any type of small pretty dog gets adopted in less than twenty four hours. Unless you planned to get a pitbull, any dog you adopt from a shelter was definitely going to get adopted regardless.

My friend gave me two Presa pups i had them from 2 months up until 11 months. and when i tell you this breed is not for the average person...my male Xerses was fine until feeding time then he wouldn't let me come near his feeding bowl he would stop eating look right at me and growl i mean the mere pup had a death stare on me the following week i gave him to my uncle who owned a transmission shop as a guard dog and yet to have anyone break in. i also gave him the female as well they are both fixed well taken care of and are now 13 years old.

Dogs are animals they cant read minds they need to be show a way to act BEFORE correcting or shouting at them. Simply 'correcting' using shock collars will not do . The dog doest know any other way to act.

Realistically though if his friends are anything like him, the pups would eventually end up in a shelter. I foster dogs and the amount of bully breeds that pass through is extremely high. For one of the dogs it took an extremely long time to find an interested adopter that was willing to put in the required work. I know puppies are cute and they bring in revenue but once the cute puppy eyes go away and you now have a large dog that might not have been trained properly, do you think people will be willing to keep them?

I dont say that everyone HAS to neuter their dogs, but if people cant handle the dogs testosterone and the dog is to focused on female dogs to get him properly trained, then it might be an option. Also, there are to many irresponsible breeders! they dont know what they are doing and cant take pups back if needed. For spaying, you have to cut the whole belly of the female as for male dog, only 2 small incisions are made as the testies are "outside" of the male. So its a much less complicated surgery as for females. But people tend to spay their females aswell bc they dont want them to get in heat.

@Gi Gi not trying to sound rude or hateful, just genuinely curious. Have you ever educated yourself on the many reasons why people choose to Dock and crop their Doberman? It's for the dogs health. Dobermans have very long and thin tails that are majorly proned to breaking. Sure, a dobe can go through life and be fine, but chances are it will probably wack it off a table or door frame and snap that thin bone. As for the ears. Its a very simple and easy task that does two things to protect your dog. 1. It prevents horrible ear infections and ear rot by allowing them to air out their ears when they run. (Yes you can clean them but its hard to get deep enough for a deep clean) 2. It gives them the true dobie look. Love it or hate it people are intimidated by the standard Doberman appearance. But that's actually a very good thing. Doberman are very good dogs, but a lot get very defensive and do not like to be touched suddenly and without warning. Small children on the street have a thing for touching cute doggies and don't always ask. When a doberman has its ears floppy it is easily mistaken for a hound dog. A much more docile dog. If a little kid goes up and grabs your Doberman because it looks like a hound, it's still going to react like a doberman and might bite. Hope this wasnt too long of a read. Also getting from a reputable breeder is worth it. Doberman in shelters tend to be problem dogs because their owners dumped them their without any training or socializing.

Do you amputate parts of your body so they can't get hurt? Can't listen to this... And believe it children grab cropped dogs too. A guard dog is not supposed to bite a child in the streets. If your dog might bite harmless people keep it muzzled don't mutilate their body ffs and why get a dog from a breeder? So you can ruin that poor puppy instead of another owner? Casper, a 3 year old Presa Canario has been contained in a Westchester country animal shelter for six months while his owner is facing $80,000 in fines, eviction and fighting to save his dog’s life after events led to Caspar injuring a visitor in his condo parking lot. When Eric Leinwand of Westchester bought Casper as a puppy from a breeder- he was encouraged by the dog’s breeder to train the dog for protection as well as leaving him in-tact to use a stud dog to bring in some ‘extra cash’ later down the road. Unfortunately, ‘later down the road’ Casper grew and started showing some troublesome behavior such as marking in the house, lunging and barking at other dogs and strangers outside home, and showing fear aggression toward people inside the home due to lack of proper basic training and socialization. Eric then decided to take the advice from some acquaintances and purchased a shock collar to attempt to control Casper’s behavior. The result of the shock collar was worse than the original situation as the behavior intensified and was made worse, especially towards strangers. In an attempt to fix his situation, Eric and Casper appeared in the third US season of Animal Planet’s It’s Me or the Dog, hosted by Victoria Stillwell. During the show, Stillwell tried to show Eric the potential of his dog’s power and what could happen WITHOUT proper training. The original story reported that “On the show, a trainer waved a big stick at Casper in a threatening manner and the dog lunged at him after being released by Eric Leinwand.” In reaction to the article, Stillwell has come out with a statement explaining “I arranged for Eric to watch a demonstration with an experienced handler and his own trained protection dog to show, in a controlled scenario, how powerful a bully breed can be. This segment included the handler, his trained protection dog and an experienced trainer in a bite suit, who waved a bite stick at the trained protection dog and NOT CASPER - a common scenario in protection work. At no time was any stick waved at Casper.” At the time when Eric purchased the dog, his condo association gave him permission to keep the dog despite the community’s no-dog rule. Over time the community grew worried about Casper and his owner, and even though reports suggest “all of the problems” started when they appeared on the show, Stillwell states “there is no doubt that the biting episodes which actually triggered the dispute would have occurred (probably even sooner) without him appearing on the show.” The episode of It’s Me or the Dog shows that despite urging from Stillwell to have the dog neutered and arrangements made by her for Eric to work with other area trainers after her departure- Eric did not follow through on much of the training, did not work with any trainers nor did he neuter Casper, leaving him to his previous behaviors which lead to events that caused the dog to act out towards the visitor. Westchester County judge Walter Rivera labeled Casper as “dangerous” but also ruled to spare his life. The judge also ordered that he must be neutered, visit a “board certified animal behaviorist” and not go out in public without a muzzle. Story by Lauren McGregor Downs

breeding bully breeds is extremely irresponsible, only 25% of bully breed dogs go to homes as puppies and stay there their entire lives. please stop breeding presas/canes/bullies/pits/bulldogs/etc

You dont know what you are talking about. The American pitbull terrier is a pure breed of dog that can trace bloodlines back a hundred years or more they need a 4 generation pedigree to be registered with the ADBA. The shelters are not overflowing with the American pitbull terrier.

@Sarah A keep telling yourself that every animal I've had has been for the entirety of the animals life. Bully breed is a term uneducated people such as you use caused by your inability to differentiate between breeds with similar characteristics. There is a bully breed called the American Bully they can be registered with the abkc. Referring to a dog such as the Presa Canario as a bully breed makes no sense they have no bulldog in them they are molosser/mastiff. So why would they be a bully breed Sara? Terms like pitbull used as a way to describe a range of dog's that have their own name's is part of the problem. Misidentification has caused allot of damage so much that people like you think the shelters are overflowing with high end pure bread pedigree having ADBA registrable American pitbull terrier's. And the assumption you have of my worth says more about your bad character then it does about me and is nothing more then a pathetic attempt to add Worth to your opinions.
