I kept thinking to myself just how much easier (and cheesier) this would be in gens beyond 3 because of the special/physical split finally making the elemental punches physical moves, plus Knock Off to, well, knock off items the opponent could be holding, or Zen Headbutt for the STAB. It'd especially be easier beyond 4 with Eviolite, which raises the defense and special defense of any unevolved Pokemon by 50%. (That's usually a mid or late game item so you can't use it to cheese your way through the entire game legitimately.)

It took me an embarrassingly long time to make the connection between physical/special stats and physical/special moves. I knew of the stats, I also knew that there were physical and special moves - I just for some reason never connected the dots between those two and wondered why sometimes a weaker move did more damage than a stronger move. It actually took me until that Jrose video in which he played through Johto with an Abra, first with special moves and then without, that I connected the dots.

I think Shadow Ball lowers special defence despite being a physical move to allow its user to more easily switch to using special moves of other types. Looking back at Gens I and II, Hypnosis/Dream Eater was a common combo for Haunter and Gengar, and getting the special defence drop with Shadow Ball would make Dream Eater hit harder.
