Today we design an economical family airplane for the purpose of being more efficient than a car.

I mean, I'm fairly sure large airliners are more efficient than a prius of there is only one person in the prius. At the other end, ultralites can actually be more efficient than a Prius for the opposite reason. They are not efficient on a fuel per kg*km basis but they have a very high payload fraction.
@messier82ac
@messier82ac Жыл бұрын
They are as a matter of fact! If you calculate things by Miles per gallon per passenger, most airliners are more efficient than your average car. They put more pollutants into the air due to lack of things such as catalytic converters, however.
@auto_revolt
@auto_revolt Жыл бұрын
@@messier82ac Yours is also a perfect example; in reality you'd have to travel to and from the airfield, also windspeed, traffic, weather, do you need a car at your destination? how about taxi time, or time spent waiting for a window to land. But all in a nice design and video.
@guard13007

As soon as you have a passenger, that disappears.. well, if you drive a vehicle w 40 mpg or higher. Of course, planes only achieve that efficiency over long distances. Short flights are horrible for the environment.

In that case you can't really use a Prius can you? You have to use sth like a bus. No matter what car, cars are always less efficient than mass public transportation, so it's not really a fair comparison.

@Sakhmeov 10 ай бұрын
I don't know why, but I have this inkling that something built like a Y-shape with an inverted gull wing and slightly forward-facing wings could be made insanely efficient, especially if you wanted to go VTOL. Like if you put the Bugatti 100P and the Terran Wraith together. You've got everything there; Pendulated self-righting, elements of BWB if you make the extension from the lower part of the fuselage and into the wing correctly, guided whirls to tumble and densify the air under the wings which should help improve lift both at travel and through the densified downwash of the drives at low speed...

1:08 Fun fact. Gliders can by thrown into the air by a winch. Which eliminates the need of an aircraft to tow it into the air
@jmdesertadventures803
@jmdesertadventures803 2 ай бұрын
But towing allows more altitude at the time of release and can be taken a really long distance before it's cut loose.

I have read that sharp angles on the truss connecting to the wing can induce more drag. It would have been cool to see the truss connect to the engine's fairing to make for a laess agressiv angle between the two lifting surfaces. In real life the engine block in this case would probably also be a load bearing member member
@messier82ac
@messier82ac Жыл бұрын
This is a good point I forgot to consider in my design. Ideally, the lifting struts should have gone vertical before coming too close to the main wing, similar to other wing-bracing strut concepts. Good call! I'll keep it in mind for the future

Little bit idealistic for the airplane, considering: -a route that cannot be closely matched by a car -calm winds -no en route weather -airports at the origin and destination That being said, many planes are advertising impressive efficiency numbers. Sea Avío Risen claims that if you “slow it down” to 120mph, it will only burn 2 gallons an hour, coming out to 60 mpg. It’s only a 2 seater, but others like the Pipistrel Panthera can probably achieve impressive numbers as well if cruised at a “slow” speed of not 200 mph.

Hey a glider pilot from Germany here, I'm enjoying youre content very much but just wanted to say that we mostly don't launch gliders by plane tow but insted use a winch system. This workes by attaching a line to the glider wich ist than pulled in fast, launching the plane in to the air like a kite. These winches usualy run with normal engines but are quiet regually elecrtical powered. In the old days gliders we're also launched with rubberbands from ontop of hills...

They are efficient by transporting lots of people at once. If a Boeing 737-800 guzzles 1.5 gallons per mile or (~.65 miles per gallon) but is carrying 166 people, it ends up using .009 gallons per mile per person, or 110.6 miles*people/gallon. A standard prius has a mpg of 53, which if carrying 4 people becomes 212 miles*people/gallon, just under two times as efficient as a Boeing 737-800. An a380-800 configured for maximum passengers gets even better with 132 miles*people/gallon. And this is all comparing to a prius. If we were to choose a more average vehicle for a 4 person family, such as a Honda CRV, which has a base mpg of 30, you get 120 mile*people/gallon, which isn't all that far off from the airliners I mentioned. And this is all assuming maximum capacity! So many people drive alone or with only one other person, so a lot of the cars on the road achieve only around 50 mile*people/gallon. I don't mean to sound 🤓but I felt this might contribute. If one could build a more efficient high capacity plane, perhaps a hybrid type which uses electric motors for cruising when the wind is behind it, or maybe use slingshots for takeoff (the portion of flight that is least fuel efficient), It could far surpass many of the cars on the road today.

I would have suggested a more comparable flight and ground route, such as San Jose California to LAX. They basically both go due South with some variation due to terrain on the ground and military airspace in the air. Because cutting the trip distance is an efficiency improvement for both modes of transportation.

You never see commercial/private aircraft use this bc it is neither useful nor efficient)

@Streaky100001 11 ай бұрын
I think this very much depends how you define efficiency. If you talk about fuel per mile per kilogram of payload or per passenger, then standard commercial aircraft are actually pretty efficient, a prius carries 4, or maybe 5 people, most airliners can carry upwards of a hundred people, that means to complete the journey, per person, you're using less fuel. Aircraft designers spend a lot of money to get the best efficiency possible, cos fuel is extremely expensive over the lifetime of the aircraft.

Electric airplanes can't come close to conventionally-fueled aircraft with current energy storage. Liquid fuel has several advantages that will take a sci-fi-level of advancement to overcome; namely, energy density, weight, and safety. Aviation fuel is significantly more energy dense than batteries, plus it has the added benefit of reducing the overall weight of the aircraft as it's consumed. Add to that, batteries are inherently risky due to their failure modes. If a fuel tank springs a leak, it leaks out and can (generally) be isolated. If a battery "springs a leak" it tends to end catastrophically by discharging all its energy in the form of heat/fire.

In the US, the registration format is the letter N (the US's aircraft registration prefix), followed by either 3 numbers and 2 letters, 4 numbers and 1 letter, or 5 numbers. Examples: N123AB, N1234A, N12345. In Canada, it's C (Canada's registration prefix) followed by 4 letters. Example: C-ABCD
