The Director's Cut of *I Am Legend* actually uses the original ending where Smith's character (spoiler, for those who haven't seen it) does *NOT* blow up the zombies along with himself. Instead he realizes that he, the human scientist who was killing/dissecting the zombies in order to find a cure, is seen as a monster by the zombies themselves. It's actually a really good ending that I'm glad was in the Director's Cut, but I'm not happy that most people don't even know about it.

Jinhunter Slay I just said the Director's Cut uses the good ending, which really humanizes the zombies. I'm guessing the studios and execs, who are usually the ones to blame for messing up perfectly good movies with crappy editing or reshooting whole portions of movies, thought the good ending wasn't "action-packed" enough and put the bad ending into the Theatrical version.
@JosibiusZ8 жыл бұрын
I believe they changed the ending after a test screening. The audience that saw the film at that time with the original ending (the one in the DC) didnt really like it and, based on those results, one of the higher ups decided to change it. Thats how we got the more Action-like ending instead of the one that made the audience question the decisions of the protagonist.
@chainsov7 жыл бұрын
yeah, the alternate ending was much much better, bu I guess it was too much for the average schmoe in the test screening.

I liked that. Seeing Darth Vader as a broken old man underneath the helmet really humanized this dark, badass presence. Obviously, other things about the ending were... meh. I think the Critic missed another crucial reason why an ending can ruin a film: Sometimes, the ending changes the meaning behind the ENTIRE film, making the film now as bad as the ending. Let's use Secret Window as an example, though I won't spoil the ending. For those who thought the twist was obvious throughout the film, let's pretend it wasn't obvious and we all believed what the film was superficially telling us. Then the ending comes along and we realize that that ending changes the entire film; ALL of the events in the film took place because of what the ending revealed and we find out that the film was only pretending to tell us one cause when there was an underlying cause we didn't know about. If you hated that ending, it's hard to enjoy the rest of the film because now you know why each and every little event happened, now you know the secret behind the entire film and it sucks. This is partially why the "It was all a dream" twist endings almost never work, because they change the meaning of the entire film. Every major event didn't happen, every lesson learned wasn't learned after all, and nothing was ever at stake, making the entire movie completely pointless. Endings are supposed to tie together the events of the film. Just like a good ending can string a bad film into a better one by giving it a better meaning or message, a bad ending can tie a good film together in a bad way by giving it a bad or stupid meaning or message. For the record, I actually like Secret Window and did not suspect the twist whatsoever. However, I understand %100 how someone could dislike it for its twist and I completely get the criticism it gets.
@promontorium7 жыл бұрын
Secret Window Johnny Depp killed his wife and imagined the hillbilly. There. It's a shitty movie. Spoil it. The part about the end of that film that I really hated was not the ending, but the VERY END where we see him chomping down on corn like he's eating a fucking apple. It's so god damn stupid. You can tell with the editing and the camera, etc. it's supposed to convey a sort of "A ha, what a clever evil bastard!" but since you're reeling from the shitty twist and all around growing annoyed with the whole film, his corn eating in your face comes off more like "Ha ha, made you watch this shit!"

There's a great book that was made into a movie that didn't pull the twist off, but man in the book, you don't suspect a thing until the very end. Shutter Island was magnificent for a book, but I heard the movie was a disappointment. Either way, I highly recommend reading the book. Now that is how you do a twist.

@SouprSpookr8 жыл бұрын
Wahl Flower I guess that one gets a pass because it was one of, if not the first movies to do that twist.
@legoC978 жыл бұрын
The thing with one of those movies is if it focuses on the character, and how they either grew or realized something about themselves, through the use of the dream, then it is okay. Think Wizard of Oz. But if the movie focuses on the story and a series of events, then "it was all a dream" makes the film complete garbage.
@blackhalo3178 жыл бұрын
I think Wizard of Oz gets a pass on that because it was building to something: Dorothy realizing there's no place like home. Also, earlier in the film, Dorothy is hit on the head so it was plausible that she had been sleeping. Movies and shows that pull that "it was all a dream" usually don't work because there was no way that you could have known. There were no clues or anything to make you think that maybe it wasn't real. Wizard of Oz, on the other hand, works because you remember that Dorothy hit her head and was unconscious. Though you were unaware that she had not actually woken up, she was in fact dreaming. I think that when Glinda tells her that she had always the power to go back home, that was in fact a clue towards the clue that she was sleeping. So, for me, it works kind of like the Sixth Sense after you go back and re-watch it.

anyone else realize that when superman is flying around the earth super fast he's not actually trying to make it spin backwards. It's actually just showing that he's going so fast that he's able to go back in time to undo all the bad stuff that happened. The earth spinning backwards just shows a time progression in reverse. Most people seem to not realize this.

@erlandjohansen71958 жыл бұрын
Snowflake Productions Regular physics can't really tell what happens if something were to move faster than the speed of light, but one suggested possibility is that it would travel backwards in time. I think that's what DC is going for, both with Superman and the Flash.
@catherinestickels25916 жыл бұрын
Two problems. One, going really fast makes you move faster through time, not backwards. Two, and more damning, he stops and goes the other way to make it spin the right way again. It's pretty clear that it's intended to be turning telhe Earth to turn back time. Unless I'm super misremembering it.

They're usually right. I can't tell you how many smart decisions large corporations, or independent filmmakers have made, that get blown off by viewers as some kind of cheap gimmick, or just cause them to neglect to convince their friends that it's worth seeing. All the best movies are "I thought it was good, other people might not like it though" and it turns out when you tell people that, their first thought is "I'm other people." One time a guy I worked with asked me if I saw "That one Brad Pitt Jesse James movie" I said "Yeah" and before I could get out how i thought it was brilliant he blurted out "Fucking boring as shit wasn't it!?" You can't really blame studios for catering to that guy... there's way more of him than there is of me. That movie didn't make back half its fucking budget - and it _really_ didn't cost that much to make, in Hollywood money.
@aztn198 жыл бұрын
Dan Nguyen I wasn't aware there was a book before seeing the movie, so I have no clue as to how it ended in novel form. But if the book also has the protagonist's cure for cancer turn folks into zombies and now he has to find a cure for zombies, then the ending differing from the movie's strange ending won't matter for me
@aztn198 жыл бұрын
M LT now THAT would have made a more interesting twist for the movie. But the film doesn't portray the "zombies" as victims until halfway through, nor does it show them as a perverse kind of society. They mimic classic horror movie zombies so well that both you and Dan really haven't corrected me on what either the book or movie calls them. Just like the victims in the Resident Evil games aren't "zombies" technically, nor or the Borg in Star Trek or DC Comics Black Lanterns, but they fit many of the troupes for zombies and I'm not that interested in that kind of monster
@futurestoryteller8 жыл бұрын
This "zombies or no" question is _really_ silly. This is an "if it looks like a duck" situation. In fact zombies aren't "zombies" if you want to go by strict adherence to logic. Because "Romero Zombies" are rotting, typically mindless, ghouls, that feast on the flesh of the living." Zombies in traditional Haitian folklore were reanimated corpses raised by magic _to do the bidding of their masters_. In any case, I didn't like the way they were depicted in I am Legend, the awful CGI effects didn't serve the story from either the "these are your terrifying reality" or "they're actually very human" perspectives. So they all but ruin the whole thing singlehanded.
@pinkyfull8 жыл бұрын
the alternate ending if you were wondering is where the will smith character after seeing one of the zombies caress the one he has "cured" on the bench realises that all the zombies he abducted and killed are living human beings. He walks past them under the weight (which is portrayed perfectly by smith) of what he has done (kill ill but still alive people) and into the future. That ending is a better on film adaptation of the book ending having a council of elders in that film would have been silly. But the power of that ending was made completely mute. We never get to see that the "zombies" aren't zombies. we never get to see the main characters regret and the moment where he realises that he has murdered dozens maybe hundreds of thinking living people to try and make them "better"
@jimmyzeke138 жыл бұрын
Another great example of a botched ending is the original ending to A Clockwork Orange, where Alex eventually *does* find himself rehabilitated... negating the entire rest of the novel's themes. Good thing they kept the fixed ending for the film.

That's why the original publshed book had it's final chapter cut. Honestly, I don't mind the ending since leaving things ambigious for the reader to determine what happened to Alex just leaves me wanting more....... wait a minute..
@DoctorPrepper8 жыл бұрын
Yes, that ending baffled me. The entire point, as I understood it, was that morality consists in the ability to choose between good and evil. In turning Alex into a "clockwork orange" devoid of the ability to choose how to act, the Ludovico technique robbed him of his humanity. But then the ending seems to suggest that he needs to be a good person anyway (for the sake of a "good ending," I suppose), which detracts from the point that his ability to willingly do wrong is what makes him human. Whereas Kubrick's film ends with Alex restored to his true self. Being free to be himself, to be human again, is the "cure" to having been forced to act in a manner contrary to his own will.
@mabusestestament8 жыл бұрын
That means you don't get the ending, I guess.
@thephantomoftheparadise56668 жыл бұрын
I think the ending represents free will. Alex chose to not to do bad things anymore and wasn't forced into it. That's the whole point of the book and movie. Their about freedom of choice.
@DoctorPrepper8 жыл бұрын
The Phantom of the Paradise True, but the way it's written into the book at the very end, almost as an afterthought, makes it feel like an abrupt deus ex machina (at least for me) which is motivated by the author's desire to force the character of Alex to be good at the end of the story. Even if it's written that Alex chooses to be good, it doesn't feel like an organic outgrowth of the rest of the story up to that point, and so it feels forced even if it isn't. I think the point about freedom of choice would have been more effective if the author had allowed Alex to continue to be evil because that would have forced the reader to think harder and really weigh the options of evil by choice vs. good by compulsion. If good by choice becomes an option for Alex, this softens the impact of the central idea that the substance of morality consists in human agency. Maybe not for all readers, but that was at least my experience reading the book.

"If we have a meal that's mostly good, but has a spice we don't like..." Bad comparison. You taste spice through the whole thing. You get bits of it throughout the dish. A movie with a bad ending is like finishing a nice chicken parmesan, only to realize that it was a bit undercooked and now you have food poisoning. Humans have a need for completion. A bad ending is like enjoying a meal only to vomit at the end. Leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Most peoples' problem with it is that the bad guy is just "Bad Iron Man" the way Loki is "bad Thor" and what's-his-face is "Bad Ant-Man," in that one movie, "Good Ant-Man" it's a common (and justified) complaint that Marvel film villains are either too similar or too boring to be a foil for the hero. Probably helped when they decided to make them punch each other last spring.

@Arphemius8 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, Dexter. Never gonna watch the series again after that ending. It just made everything pointless. I joked with a friend that it seems like the writers were told there was gonna be another season, but then they decided to make an ending two episodes before the season finale, so the writers had to come up with some bullshit to end it with: "Wait, what? You're ending it _this season_? But we need at least another 4 episodes to create a semblance of closure... No sir. No we'll do it sir." *hangs up* "Hey Gabe, what's up?" "They want us to end it now." "Now?" "Now." "Jesus Christ..." "I know." "Okay, start with the basics, the main characters: Where do they end up?" "We don't have time to give all of them an ending! We'll just kill one of them off gratuitously, that saves some space. The next we'll just blast away with a storm so he ends up in some strange place in rural America. Some of the side characters can have a happy ending I dont know." "What about the rest of the side characters?" "Shit, ehm... we'll just have to abandon them." "Not even a slideshow during the end credits or something? We'll give them nothing?" "We'll have to." And that's how one of the greatest tv-shows was absolutely fucked by the ending.
@kaijud39418 жыл бұрын
Arphemius Yeah from what I've heard the last episode was written completely at the last second because they were told by Showtime they weren't allowed to kill off Dexter. The whole ending with season 7 looked like it was building up to what it should have been. The Miami Police Department after Dexter. With LaGuerta's replacement being the final main villain. But no....it was just copy/paste from the first season....hell not even that, the entire season revolved around how Hanna's love changed Dexter (despite her doing nothing but screwing him over for her own benefit) Hell every dumb decision and bad move Dexter made that season that cost the lives of those around them were because he was focusing too much on Hanna instead of Oliver....which already put the story on hold each time he did and costed him majorly after he did it.

I think the effect's amplified by rewatching, when 'effortlessly trouncing hordes of incompetent goons' is the set piece for more and more Marvel movies. (Seriously, Thanos? Return of the King's ending wasn't "bad." The only people who didn't like it are the people who didn't read the book and didn't know how long the "epilogue" would be. And even then, the battle of the shire was cut out.
@PsylomeAlpha8 жыл бұрын
yeah, they cut out an entire fourth movie by having wormtongue kill saruman.
@DanKaraJordan8 жыл бұрын
And by cutting out the Scorching of the Shire, cut out the whole message of the story. This story is not about some orcs and Mordor, but about how war changes people, drawing them together and making them stronger in some ways but also damaging them deeply in others. The hobbits who returned home again were not the same people - they were heroes in their own right but the were also no longer hobbits of the Shire. It is the classic question of whether you can ever go home again. By shifting the focus from the battle of the Shire as the true climax to Modor and the eagles, you create an epilogue that feels overdrawn. But then, Peter Jackson gloried in the warfare of the story, which was directly against Tolkien's vision.
@Lady_in_the_Radiator8 жыл бұрын
I would argue that even without the scouring of the Shire, the point was made clear enough that the hobbits were, in many ways, not the same people that they were when they left. There's that wonderful scene of the four of them sitting together silently in the Green Dragon, just looking at each other, as if they're thinking, "is this really what life was like?" And then of course, in the case of Frodo, it's made very clear that he simply can't fit into this world anymore after what he has gone through. I feel like having another climax at the end would have made the movie feel completely overblown. By taking these themes and putting theme in the dénouement, they made the best possible compromise between having a well-structured movie and being faithful to the books.
@catherinestickels25916 жыл бұрын
Socrates' Daemon Tolkien's vision was a story you would enjoy reading. He didn't intentionally include any messages at all. Obviously it has them, all writing does, but he never meant the books to be analyzed for meaning. He was explicit on this point. Also I wouldn't say Jackson glorified war. He showed it as something tragic but necessary. His messages on war are pretty much delivered through Theoden and the tragedies that befall him as king. His son dies and we see a somber funeral and a weeping king, but he still rides out to defend his people.

this also applies to most Tarkovsky movies. Their plot is very slow and it seemes to give more importance to the admitedly beautiful imagery moves, but usually by the end it gets you, the slowness is methodical trying to get you in the same mood as the characters in the story and when it ends it hits you hard. The whole thing about an emotional connection is what a lot of people don't understand when I tell them I like 1989's Batman better than any of the Dark knight films. I was 13 when Batman came out and me and my 2 best friends saw it over and over again. It was the last summer before we had to "start growing up". We were still kids, there wasn't any summer jobs or worrying about High School for us. Now one of us is gone (He died the year after we graduated) so I can pop in Batman and be taken back to those days at age 40. Maybe it's something you have to get older to realize.

Exactly, because if you like a movie, great, that doesn't make it good or bad. I personally do not like the 1989 Batman, the world felt so fake and cheesier than a comic book (which for comic books it works).
@michaelotis2238 жыл бұрын
Vixx Celacea agreed. But I think it goes deeper than just nostalgia. I grew up on Burton's Batman and it worked for that era where the paranoia of uncontrollable crime was prevalent. We're now in the era of terrorism paranoia and the Nolan Batman embodied that. And you could argue Affleck's Batman was modeled with the current migration crises with superman being the alien we're not so sure we want in our society. So it's not just about which was the better Batman but rather which one was right for the time I think....

Credits Scene: Because of his hero reveal, Nick Fury invites Tony Stark to the Avengers initiative. Iron Man 2: Tony Stark is rejected from the Avengers initiative. But by the time of the "Avengers" film, he himself brings this up we they invite him back. So, that was pointless. So, you're right out this one. Credits Scene: S.H.E.I.L.D finds Mjolnir, Thor's Hammer. This was a set-up for the Thor film. That went somewhere. Iron Man 3: Tony Stark destroys all of his suits. But by the time of the "Age of Ultron" film, he is back as Iron Man again. So, that was pretty much pointless. Once again, you are right. Credits Scene: Tony Stark is venting with Bruce Banner... Yeah, I'm not going to try to defend this one. Sure, Bruce Banner got a cameo. But that scene was just there for laughs. Once again, you are right.

The crazy thing about the I Am Legend endings is that, depending on which one you watch, it changes your entire perception of the movie, if you watch the directors cut with the ending where Will Smith’s character lives and he sees that these creatures still have humanity and that he’s truly the monster now you see it as a deep, complex action/drama movie with a strong, complex message, but if you watch the theatrical cut where he blows the Darkseekers up and the lady and her kid escape with the cure and save humanity it just becomes a generic, run of the mill zombie flick

You can thank the studio, not Jackson for that. Everyone, including him hated it. He was basically thrown into it after del Toro left, and left to fend for himself. He even had to film some of the scenes on the fly because the script or choreography wasn't finished. I see it as the best he could've done with the absolute worst settings.

Disney is a prime example of an ending not ruining a movie. I LOVE Frozen, I LOVE Tangled, I LOVE Beauty and the Beast. But I FREAKING hate their endings. Yeah yeah, it's a kid's movie/fairy tale they're supposed to have happy endings. But I always hate those "someone dies but is brought back via true love" tropes. It ruined the impact of beast's "death," it ruined the impact of Flynn Rider's "death," and it ruined the impact of Anna's "death." Thus, whenever a main character "dies" in a Disney movie, I will never believe it.

I wouldn't call The Straight Story dull at all. It's excellently directed and shot, scripted, and acted (and let's not forget the musical score by Angelo Badalamenti). It's of a slower pace but it keeps you invested along for the ride, there are many great moments throughout, and you can feel it building upon it throughout... but yes, the ending does wrap it up perfectly and improve the whole.

There are so many movies that I thought I was going to put in my top 11 favorite movies list that I watch every year but because the ending sucks and know that I had scene them it was not going to be a surprise that the ending is bad I never want to see them again. Personally the ending to War of the Worlds doesn't bother me to much because the really amazing visuals and characters from the rest of the movie save it for me, not enough that I want to watch it on a sort of regular base but if it's on I'll give it a watch. One of the movies that I thought was going to be one of my all time favorites was the Will Smith movie HanCock. I was so enthralled with the movie, I love Smith I love the setting I loved the progression of his character than after the really nice dinner in the movie everything just goes to hell. @theodorwilliam69438 жыл бұрын
I feel like the don't feed the plants ending really would have ended a movie on a kinda sad not. I mean it's a dark comedy but most dark comedies have at least a somewhat happy ending. i think I would have probably not like the movie as much if they had stuck to the alternate ending
@NewhamMatt8 жыл бұрын
That is a great question. By all accounts, if they'd kept the "Don't Feed the Plants" ending, the film would never have been released - the test audience response was that bad. On the other hand, it did keep more to the plot of the musical and its anti-capitalist message. All in all, I'm glad we now have both. Much like with Scott Pilgrim vs the World, both endings are defensible on different levels, but one nearly always seems to appeal to an individual more than the other.

I have a idea for a new video in the future. Is it okay to constantly watch the same film good or bad?
@blueberrybandit73908 жыл бұрын
Just my two cents - It's pretty obviously unhealthy if you're constantly sitting in front of a screen watching a film over and over again. But that answer isn't any fun so, here's another answer. It's good to re-watch films to be more and more aware of the strengths and weaknesses of a film. Sometimes people watch a film they've already watched and start thinking about the underlying themes and hints in the film. Or some have that "HOLY. SHIT." moment that leads to theorizing and toying with some ideas related to the film. Or they realize that a film has its faults, but they can still recognize the talent put into it. That is good. But if you watch the same movie over and over, boredom is inevitable. You're gonna get sick of hearing the same things over and over. You'll stop thinking about the film because you're tuning it all out as though it's just background noise. You'll get desensitized to the emotions in the film which is a MAJOR part of a film. Without that, the film isn't a piece of art or a story anymore, it's just some stuff happening on a screen that you'll tune out and not care about. That is bad.
@afrikasmith10498 жыл бұрын
Blueberry Bandit My question was meant for your second answer. I think there's a bit more meaning to your second answer. In a way it also applies to film critics too.
@sir.hopper8 жыл бұрын
I suppose it depends on *why* you're re-watching the movie. Personally, I tend to go back to my favorite TV shows _(which I know are not movies, but the concept- I believe- still hold up)_ because I enjoy looking farther into the way the story was presented. I get to see the character progression and notice things I didn't before. I am a die-hard Avatar fan, and have watched both Airbender and Korra many many times; and each time I do another run-through there's always something I didn't notice before, be it a random background element, or some foreshadowing that wouldn't be given purpose for another season. I'm a story writer myself, so noticing all of these small details fascinates me. I know some people who do this with movies as well. A lot of movies have such small hints that suggests what the climax will be, and it usually takes a few re-watches to see them all. So with that said, not every movie is that re-watchable. If the director didn't add any easter eggs or minor details to the movie, then there isn't much to gain from a second or third watch-through.

People Didn't like the ending to Star Trek Into Darkness? This is news to me, I quite liked it.
@LillianEileenSnape8 жыл бұрын
I don't like it because I think it spat in the face of the original Wrath Of Khan by reversing the roles and then instantly bringing Kirk back. I just don't think it had the heart of the original, but then again, the original had three seasons and a movie of build up, and Into Darkness had 2009 and that was it.
@FrancisXLord8 жыл бұрын
I actually read it as paying respect to Wrath of Khan, and I still watch Wrath of Khan every couple of weeks, it is my favourite Star Trek film. There was the Kobayashi Maru (I know, sad that I can spell that), there was Khan and then, just in case you were comfortable enough to think that they wouldn't change things, they changed them. It woke me up in the cinema I can tell you, so it did its job. Did all those people who don't like the ending of Into Darkness not see the 2009 Star Trek film. It was, I thought, clearly implied that this new timeline will not necessarily follow the last one. That means that there will be variations and I thought making one of them such a twist from what we were expecting allowed for a setup, that was probably lost on those complaining about that twist being disrespectful, that got my blood pumping because I so wanted to see Spock chase down Khan. I thought that was a pretty emotional setup, but you don't feel the emotion if you're too busy emoting about how it varies from the previous version.
@FrancisXLord8 жыл бұрын
That's it, decided I'm watching Into Darkness. I love the ending.

I was thinking the same thing, the timelines were changed so it would make sense that there were little deviations like that. I recently bought all three star treks on blu-ray because i like them so much. I also really enjoyed the wrath of khan when i saw it and it felt like into the darkness was paying homage to it. It felt good seeing spock "get revenge" for what happened in the other timeline.

The only Iron Man movie ending I hated was Iron Man 3, and I didn't really like that movie anyway. Pepper Exstremis infection is glossed over, Tony apparently put off the surgery that could've saved his life for three years for some reason, and he blows up all his Iron Man suits, throwing away the responsibility of being an Avenger. Yes, it's not a Spider-Man movie, but that still bothers me.
@rockbusterproductions8 жыл бұрын
I had a huge problem with that when I saw Age Of Ultron, and Tony doesn't even reference destroying all his suits. Yet he's still got all of his stuff back and he's back with the Avengers. What the fuck?
@Danny-tf3fd8 жыл бұрын
Well, to be fair, Age of Ultron takes place at least two years later. Steve probably came to Tony to ask for help with Hydra. Besides, he only had two suits in that movie (three if you count the Hulkbuster), and those drones, which were only a safety thing, and can't Tony whip up an Iron Man suit in like five minutes?
@rickycollins77237 жыл бұрын
Danny Butler Well I loved Iron Man 3, (my favorite iron man movie and one of my favorite superhero movies) That ending would have been much better, if it had been less easy. It would have been better if instead of having surgery, the ending shot could be him, peaceful and with pepper, but knowing he still has the fake heart, reminding him he always has and will be iron man. Also, it would be his last movie.
@antoniusmetal6 жыл бұрын
A problem the character of Iron Man sometimes presents even in comic books is his unlimited resources. Sometimes it's like no matter what happens or what gets destroyed it doesn't really matter, because he has huge amounts of money and skill so he can just keep building unlimited power. Something that really bothered me about the movie, although it somewhat makes sense, is the fact that suits can operate remotely and do not need a pilot to be there. That makes it unnecessary for Tony Stark to be in a suit, risk his life and suffer danger and harm, which is what makes a hero great. Then again, most likely because of that they still put him in a suit, but because of the other scenes it now seems pointless to do it.

Here's an interesting editorial topic: Is Disney Ruining the Film Industry? I mean, think about it. Every week they announce a new live-action remake, they own Marvel and Disney Animation-two companies that seem to be following a formula that people like too much to notice, they've cannibalized Pixar and forced them to put out unnecessary sequels every year, and they're promising a new Star Wars movie every year until the end of time, which could be worrying if TFA's plot points and the Rogue One reshoots are any indication. Meanwhile, they don't have anything original on the schedule in the near future. And some promising movies with big budgets and original ideas like The BFG and Tomorrowland got no marketing. And Disney could solve this by investing in some low- or mid-budget adult dramas (they still own Touchstone, by the way), but they won't promote those because they can't milk a cinematic universe out of those properties. And of course, with all these moves, Disney has crushed every other studio at the box office, encouraging everyone else to try to compete in a battle they can't win. This has led to a very underwhelming time for blockbusters in general (DC's movies, Paramount wanting a Transformers Cinematic Universe, Sony throwing $150M at an underwritten Ghostbusters, etc.) that looks to get worse as everyone tries to copy Disney, pushing originality more and more out of the film industry.
