Short answer, yes. I have Septo Optic Dysplasia, which caused me to be born totally blind, and it also caused me to be on the autism spectrum. I want to be a musician, because one of my hyperfocuses is music. My husband, who is also totally blind and autistic due to having SOD loves cars just as much as Ian.

I believe you can do it! One of the best things about music is Having such a great ear as I am a musician and as much as I am a music reader I do also listen to so much by ear, and with the hyperfocus you have you can go far and learn a lot! It especially helps if you are learning really difficult songs and/or pieces because I listen to them over and over again to make sure that I can get it right for the next rehersal or concert (yes, sometimes reading the music really doesn’t help at first if you’re sightreading something really exorbitant, so like I would always listen to the recording and listen closely to my part) so yeah I think you got it! I believe in you!

@@Owen2131_ I actually play by ear. I even have perfect pitch. This is one of the reasons why if I mess up or if I get pitchy in my voice I get so annoyed with myself. I’m actually working on not limiting myself and I’m working on it through music. For example, I don’t allow myself to show emotions because I feel like in order to be a musician I only am allowed to show emotion of happiness and peace. I’m not allowed to show emotions of sadness, I’m not allowed to cry or express emotions of anger or grief.

Ian is so knowledgeable about cars and he got convinced he is a car salesman. I think Rob was getting at with his mom's car people can be too commercial and too speedy. Ian definitely is knowledgeable and understands what he is saying, giving strong advice and a low-pressure attitude.

It's so great how Ian's developing. He can be really proud of himself. With his shirt and his knowledge of cars, he seems like a salesman. I would definitely prefer to buy something from someone who gives honest and objective information. Because of my autism, I am similar to Ian and I know people who prefer that. I think Ian will do really great at being a car salesman. Also speaking of the workforce. Next year I’m going into a program called the Transitional Vocational Program which teaches young adults with mild developmental disabilities who’ve finished high school the skills needed to find and keep a job. I have a couple of ideas for career choices but I’m still not exactly clear what my career choice is yet. Luckily this program will help the students decide and also try many different jobs and have the employment specialists guide us. It’s a 1 year program but if individuals are still not successful in employment they can go back for another year. I think it will be really beneficial for me, also considering that there aren’t much support options for people like me. People like my older brother who’s severely autistic have lots of support systems and people with no disabilities are very independent so they don’t need much support. I’m really happy that programs like this exist so people with mild disabilities get support as well. This program seems like would be really good for Ian except for the fact that you live in a completely different area.

I've turned my music/music gear special interest into a business. I did very well at Guitar Center when I worked there because I was very honest with what was good and what was just expensive crap, and I have an encyclopedic knowledge of gear that's available. People respond really well to an honest and non-pushy salesman. I was top sales most months, had customers who asked for me by name, and ended up even moving into B2B (business to business) sales with invoices in the six figures range. Now I'm on the "mechanic" side building my own guitars and effects pedals, and eventually drums and amps when I have space. With a lot of practice and experience I think autistic people can be GREAT at sales. You can always learn the personality side that way. When he hits job age try to get into retail, especially in a smaller/local shop who can be a bit more accommodating. I learned so much about selling and working with customers at my first job.

I think both a salesman and a mechanic have their goods and bads. A mechanic might cause sensory issues with the noise and oil. But someone might ask something out of the box when buying a car, which could trip up a literal thinker. I personally think he'd be great at either one, he just has to find a job that can work with his autism; that's MUCH easier spoken than applied. Good luck in whatever you decide to do, Ian.

I would definitely prefer someone who is very knowledgeable and honest and kind of social awkward and to be honest, I'm kind of like that and I also have high-functioning autism and I also like cars and buses. And I can see Ian being a pretty good car salesperson or mechanic if he wants to do that when he's older. I know that I want to do something with cars or buses when I'm older but I'm not quite sure yet. And also, we used to own a 2007 Toyota Yaris sedan that we bought in May of 2006 when my mom got into a crash in her 1993 Honda Accord (I wasn't even born yet) and that car I called my childhood car. We got rid of it in December of 2022 and replaced it with a blue 2023 Hyundai Elantra SEL (we also own a black 2021 Hyundai Elantra SEL that replaced a black 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage) and I helped my parents buy both of our Elantra's (I will admit though, when we were buying our 2021 Elantra in March of 2022, I was excited and probably kind of over obsessive) but my parents did say that I did help them a lot when we were buying them.

I might get a job at the Nike campus that is really close to where I live, where I would get paid for checking fire distinguishers, to see if they are still good or if any of them needs to be replaced. What I like about the Nike campus is that it is surrounded by quite a lot of greenery, which is one of the things I would really enjoy about working at the Nike campus if I get the job.

Great topic! I have had a hard time with jobs, it was all social fumbling without me realizing. People are quick to judge so they didn't give me much of a chance, it was frustrating to understand that people weren't being particularly mean, they just didn't understand. I'm a lot like Connor with autism light so most people didn't see that I was having an issue. It helped me so much to intentionally focus on having a great working relationship with my bosses and to have the interview cool turkey without mentioning autism first, I brought it up later and explained a few things about myself. My clothes fitting right and having a job that gives me space from others sometimes is very important to me. It made me feel so relieved to know that my managers actually "got it" they help me with little things when I need it but they understand my pride and how I work too. It was so bad before but now it's much better, selling myself correctly seemed to make the difference. I tried many times to explain autism before but it didn't seem to help, I will keep trying to explain more another time.

A quick bit about relationships with employees is that it helps to slowly drop hints or small conversations about autism so that people can organically adapt to the potential differences in the way you socialize without too much conflict. People often will help resolve conflict in the background and that isn't to say I am not trying for my own part. It helped a lot in particular to have authority figures too. The big thing for me was trying to take on responsibility and to make it seem casual while still acknowledging and requesting help.

Right before the lockdowns happened in 2020, I was a dishwasher at Portland State University, and for the most part I was a excellent dishwasher, except I wasn't very good at training or supervising a new dishwasher, since I am on the part of the autism spectrum where I am too reserved and shy to train or supervise a new co-worker. And there was another dishwasher at PSU who was also on the autism spectrum who wasn't nearly as reserved as me and a lot more outgoing who had no problem training or supervising a new dishwasher.

I used to sell things and I got good at it, it helped to have a lot of "blocks" of talking points. Because the relationship between customer and sales rep is short, it's very easy to lean on repetitive talking points without "showing". It is possible for an autistic person to have a very well adapted conversation and even seem better than a typical person in a certain context.

That seems like the perfect job for Ian! My dream job is to be a writer for Studio C (my special interest), which breaks the stereotype that people on the spectrum don't have a sense of humor. I've written 16 sketches so far and sent four to Studio C to apply for a writer's job already. Unfortunately, I didn't make it, but that was during my early sketch writing days. Hopefully, in the future, I'll get the job. Also, this is off-topic, but what do you guys think of the BYUTV show A Kind of Spark? I would love to hear your thoughts.

He is very good unlike many autistic and honestly most kids older than Ian don't listen as well to the questions asked. I know I have had issues with knowing the limit of revealing too much. I think Ian would be really good not selling someone just doing a good honest work.

Ian, if you see this. You do it better than the majority who gravitate to sales due to blatant extroversion, many of whom don''t know their a_ _ from 3rd base. Ian, the most important tenant of success is: Do what you love. Listen to 'your' mind and heart. Nobody will ever be good at something they don't like facing every day. Figure out what you like in life and do it. Many of the greatest minds in history were autistic including Elon Musk and current world champion chess champion Magnus Larsson. Bobby Fischer was too. Realistically no. Sales are going to hire the most extroverted person. Sales is about an emotional connection, anyone can learn the information and memorize it. His skills would be much better in an auto shop, and even then there are a lot of workplace bullies in blue collar environments. If he can navigate that, and deal with possible sensory issues, he would excel in mechanics.

I would much rather buy a car from someone on the autism spectrum. Pushy salesmen/women annoy me to the point where I will leave (politely, but let them know they're too much) if they get too pushy. Has Ian thought about opening his own car showroom (or car repair shop) with other people on the autism spectrum when he's older & made enough money? I would far rather go there than a "traditional" (for want of a better word) showroom/mechanic. And I'm sure they would quickly get a good reputation for being much more interested in what's best for their customers than making mega bucks.

Ofcourse someone with autism can be a carsalesman. Same as they can become a docter a nurse or a psychologist... for woman there are plenty of nurses and psychologist with autism cause they made from the age of 2 a study out of looking how people do there thing to understand and copy. i would say they make a better psychologist because they are willing to look how a person really is and think in sollution outside off a protocol. if needed. Everyone has its own strenghts and weaknesses same as NT´s so its finding the right fit not a question off can someone with autism... i would say what if you flipped that question the other way around could a NT become a.... whatever and then the same answer aplies not everyone can only if it suites them...
