Thank you Chuck for these videos and Dr Barnard for your book on diabetes because you guys changed my life. I have been a vegan since April 27th, 2020. I have lost over 100 pds. Officially on doctor's office scale it is 104. Never thought I would be at this point. I began at 55 yrs old and thought it might be too late for me. I eat beans every day! Off of diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol medications. Thank you and much love. Working on last 40 pds. 🥰

Here in Fargo, ND.... I've been able to find a pound of dried black beans/ pinto beans/ white beans for as low as $1. The cans of beans would be $.59 to $.89 per can. So, for someone who is trying to eat healthy on a budget, buying the dried beans and cooking them from scratch is a remarkable way to get fiber, protein, and health benefits on very little money. I use the cooked beans in salads, in Asian stir-fries, and in homemade veggie burgers.

@@adorable3817 it's actually up to 67 lbs now & is ongoing. I thought I had plateaued, but I'm losing weight again now. Although I did eliminate my handful of nuts a day at this point to aid the weight loss. Oh and I had previously done the Atkins diet circa 2005 lost about 60 lbs in 3 months & kept it off for 3 years until a cross country move changed my eating patterns greatly. This diet is tougher to adhere to while eating out, but I am far more motivated to maintain this diet because it makes me feel so much better physically & mentally.

It is encouraging to hear that vitamin D testing is expected to increase. I asked my primary physician to test my D after my daughter found that hers was dangerously low and she had to receive some infusions. My Dr said 'No, I never test anyone's D'. I finally found a great new doctor and FIRED her! (For a variety of reasons).

Plus! If coffee is so healthy, why doesn't he drink any? Dr. Greger doesn't drink it either. Coffee is GARBAGE!!!!! It stresses out the body, the adrenals.... It's massively addictive, the whole world is addicted - it's an industry, and I think sometimes these doctors are afraid to get sued. The only difference is that coffee addiction is "cute" we have mugs and t-shirts for it. All those ppl that say they can't possible go without coffee - not even 1 day. Replace the word coffee with alcohol and they're considered an alcoholic.

I was quite low in vitamin D despite living in Florida. To get good vitamin D exposure safely through the sun (assuming you are white), you have to sunbathe for about ten minutes with 3/4 your clothes off every day during the summer months. Incidental exposure on your arms or neck isn't enough if you aren't consuming vitamin D in your diet.

@smudge8882 2 жыл бұрын
I just want to echo that low fodmap is only supposed to be short term. Also, I would recommend seeing an immunologist and being evaluated for Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. It is often mistaken for IBS but besides digestive issues, it can also cause headaches, memory/concentration issues, facial flushing, or dermatographism. It's relatively newly discovered so doctors aren't always informed on what it is nor the best test for it, so be sure that the test you get is an 11-beta prostaglandin F2 test taken as a 24-hour urine test. It needs to be taken while you are experiencing symptoms otherwise it will give a false negative. Other tests can have high false negative rates even if you're experiencing symptoms. It's tough to get a diagnosis for this illness, but essentially it is the body having pseudo-allergic reactions to various things, especially common allergens. Try and get tested for MCAS, but if you can't get tested, I'd recommend briefly eliminating common allergens from your diet and seeing if your symptoms improve. Since MCAS doesn't cause real allergies, they also are often not permanent and you might be able to reintroduce those foods later. I have Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, and when I eat completely plant based, I do not react to other foods. But if I eat animal products, I start reacting to other foods and I have to go through a period where I eliminate common allergens and other things I'm reacting to (which can vary). So in order to stop having symptoms, I have to figure out what my triggers are this time, eliminate them, eliminate animal products, and then after a while when my symptoms have completely gone away for a good while I can reintroduce the non-animal food triggers without issue. Sadly with a plant based diet, it often increases the amount of allergens you eat so that makes it easy for MCAS symptoms to either get worse or remain present after going plant based. But it doesn't have to stay that way, as long as you listen to your body.

Today I saw this. I thought that I had to include green leafy greens daily. I am realizing it can be cooked beans, cooked squash, cooked beets (all which I enjoy) and I enjoy making hummus. I suppose the fresh veggies can be with the hummus. Plus, I like making home made mayonnaise ( I do use egg yolks - but that is a healthy fat for me and not very often) when I make a potato salad with lots of celery and onions and herbs and so it is a fresh, cool salad as I boil the potatoes - and on hot days it is really nice to eat. Thank you I need to lose LOTS of weight - perhaps the best for me would be at 140 pounds as a good goal. I prefer to state my weight and go down from there; instead of saying how much I lost - I will start from 220 and work my way down, as this morning I was at 220. Thank you for making this podcast and especially about the weight loss of that individual at the end. I am inspired, as of course, I gained weight in 2020 and have also gained in 2021. Thank you for allowing me this "public forum" that I will use to "document" my weight until I reach 140 pounds!!! How long will it take me? Please help me out with your comments. I am not on any pharmaceuticals; I have not been vaccinated; however I have high TSH which is underactive thyroid or thyroiditis. I want to "naturally" resolve this. Losing weight is how one doctor informed me to get the TSH lowered. It is a vicious cycle of not being able to lose weight, and having the underactive thyroid. Perhaps the other numbers will not go down; but with CoViD-19 I KNOW I must take more steps to eat plant-based (maybe a few exceptions like bone broth and eggs once in a while) and walking and weights. I started a few days ago and this video/podcast has spurred me to do this 24/7 (eating plant based) so I hope to "report" weekly on my progress. I hope that is ok. How about every Wednesday? Thank you very much!! Oh, plus, now I eat WHOLE grains, not the refined white flour. Plus, I enjoy grinding my own flour (rye) and baking pumpernickel or rye bread. Store bought is for the fresh veggies, legumes, nuts, seeds, and grains where I prepare my own breads. Thank you, Dr. Barnard and host and other listeners!!! Dee

You really don't have to soak the beans. If you don't have time what you could do is put your beans in a pot and put about six to eight cups of water boil it or high for 2 minutes take it off and let it sit for at least an hour. Then rinse your beans about three to four times and then you can go ahead and cook them

Been wfpb diet for a month now. It is really messing with my GI tract. Severe symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhea, gas, black stools. I have backed off of so many greens and increased my starches. Is this normal
@123limewatt
@123limewatt 2 жыл бұрын
It’s hard to say what is normal. Personally, it took me 2 months to discover what always causes diarrhea (chickpeas and edamame) and to eat smaller portions so it’s not limiting me. It’s been almost 5 months, and my body is still adjusting. If you’re concerned about your symptoms, please see your MD for a proper evaluation. Good luck.

Your doctor should be doing a vitamin D test on you anyways. Minder either my OBGYN doctor or my primary care doctor or my weight loss doctor. So whichever one does the first during that year I will have the results sent to the other doctor to put in my file

I am simply trying to figure out how to not be iron deficient eating plant based. I can’t stay on PB because I always drop iron and become anemic. Weight loss is good but weight doesn’t drop with anemia very well.

You may have been insulin resistant long before switching to plant based foods, so the extra carbs increasing blood glucose may be a sign of that.

I know everyone is different but I have been eating a 75-80% plant-based diet and it is not enough for me to see the kind of changes a 100% WFPB diet seems to offer. Recently, I've been finding my taste buds changing, though, which is great.

@adorable3817
@adorable3817 2 жыл бұрын
@@Equinox1.5 Yes, it's that fast. Here's what you do: Remove these foods from your kitchen/house: 1. Refined sugar - NO SUGAR anything, no maple syrup, no nothing. If necessary, use dried dates, figs or prunes to add sweetness. 2. Flour products - avoid any and all type of flour, regardless how "healthy" it claims to be (no bread, no noodles, no Wraps, no cake....NOTHING) 3. Oil - ZERO oil, no coconut, no olive oil - don't fry veggies in the skillet. Use coconut oil only on your body/skin. 4. Salt - DO NOT add salt to your food!!!!! Salt prevents you from stopping when you're full. Get creative, use herbs, onions, garlic, and other spices to flavor foods. Salt is not the answer to everything. Taste the food you're eating. If your dish needs salt in order to Taste good....you're doing something wrong. 5. Processed foods - avoid anything with a list of ingredients. Vegan Replacement foods, Beyond meat etc This is what you eat: ALL Fruits and vegetables Potatoes Beans/legumes Herbs/spices Nuts Seeds Sprouts Note: if you like Avocado, eat max 1/4 - 1/2 per day, only hand full of nuts per day DRINK ONLY WATER - AT LEAST 2-3 LITERS PER DAY If you want something else, you can drink tea - but no Honey or any other sweeteners in it 😎✌

@@Equinox1.5 just glad if I can help. It's almost like salt/sugar/fat/oil/flour/processed foods, clogg the drain....so to speak. Once you get that big nasty hairball out of the way - fat literally melts away 🙏🥰 One thing I forgot, walking. The body does a PHENOMENAL job getting rid of garbage. Dumps it into the lymphnode-system. To activate/empty the trash....we have to move, walk. So be sure to go at least 3,000-6,000 steps a day (Swing your arms if possible) your body loves that!!!! 😎✌

Vegan meat oils has nothing directly to do with weight loss, what matters in weight loss is calories, doesn't matter whether you eat carnivore or vegan or milketarian until you eat less then your calories requirements you won't loose weight, veganism just apart from the healthiest helps in weight loss better because of sparsh calories per amount of food

I eat about one lb. of beans most days. Usually black but also white, red, and pinto. My cholesterol improved slightly but I already had a BMI of 21-22 before going vegan. Since going vegan, my percentage body fat has increased some. I eat no oil. The only difference of now compared to before was I ate lean meats mostly seafood and not every day. My numbers are little changed with a vegan diet except that my triglycerides went up on the vegan diet and this is over a period of years. It's not a short term effect. I cook nearly all my food and buy no processed vegan food. My health was excellent before going vegan and my health is excellent after. Overall, I don't see much difference.
