How much of a challenge to Western hegemony does the expansion of BRICS actually pose? How much of this has been brought on by the West’s own hubris? What should we make of the ideological differences among the BRICS countries? Could India and Saudi Arabia act as spoilers? Or are we witnessing the symptomatic decline of American hegemony, with US allies turning toward Washington’s rivals? What does this mean for the rise of China?
To discuss this and more, Rania Khalek was joined by Prahbat Patnaik, marxist economist, professor emeritus at JNU, and author of many books including A Theory of Imperialism and the more recent Capital and Imperialism: Theory, History, and the Present, both co-authored with Utsa Patnaik.

It's interesting to learn more about the discussions and proposals around BRICS nations and their potential use of gold. There are several reasons why people may choose to buy gold, including its historical use as a store of value and means of exchange, its potential as a hedge against inflation or currency devaluation, and its relative scarcity compared to other commodities. Additionally, gold can offer diversification benefits to investment portfolios, as it tends to have a low correlation with other asset classes like stocks and bonds. However, it's important to note that investing in gold carries risks and may not be suitable for everyone. and investors should carefully consider their investment objectives, risk tolerance, and financial situation before making any decisions

BRICS represents Nations that have been oppressed by the West over many years....this is the reason for an alternative grouping of Nations. BRICS doesn't dictate in order to PROMOTE war, in fact BRICS appears not to dictate at all, but to build on certain interdependent principles based on economic development.

You are wrong , it was Golden Sachs idea concerning BRICS. he was a financial consultant from the Western school of economics. The concept of BRICS is to dislodge the US dollars in the global trading and the China strongly wants YUAN to be the leading currently replacing the US Dollars in GLOBAL trading, the second largest economy of the world. On the other hand the Agenda of Russia in Africa is control Africa away from Western Influence later on all African Democratic Nation will become a Marxist country of influence , Like Niger, Mali were the Russian Wagner group arre presence, and now GABON, Where is western oppression in African continent , TRIBAL leader commits oppression amonged its people they overthrow government replace by dictatorial military leaders.

BRICS weight on global scale is, 46% of global population, 37% of global gdp, 40% of oil production, and a third of global gas production. On top of the above, there are at least dozens of countries expressing their interests to join the block. While there are scepticisms from some, others are lauding the block.

Yes in according to statistics, But in reality BRICS nations had the highest poverty level with very low per capita income of its population. China and India dis-agree on 9 dash 9 line in South China sea.

0:00: 💪 The expansion of BRICS with the addition of six new countries, including Iran, signifies a significant challenge to Western hegemony and a force to be reckoned with in terms of global oil and gas production. 4:32: 🌍 The expansion of BRICS is driven by various factors including the current economic crisis, geopolitical interests, and the desire for trade in local currencies. 9:15: 🌍 The inclusion of Iran in the economic block diversifies away from American hegemony and opens up opportunities in world politics, but it is not an anti-imperialist movement. 13:59: 💱 The idea of trading in local currency between countries, such as the BRICS countries, can challenge Western hegemony and increase liquidity in the world economy. 18:10: 🌍 The speaker discusses the potential of local currencies and the limitations of a common currency for global South countries and the US dollar. 23:00: 🌍 The expansion of BRICS is seen as a positive development that increases options for countries and reduces the monopoly control of advanced countries on the international financial architecture. 26:55: 🌍 The speaker questions the legitimacy of the G7 as representatives of freedom and democracy, citing historical oppression by Western liberal democracies and the rise of right-wing politics. 31:06: 💰 The war in Ukraine has led to a shortage of dollars in many countries, prompting them to seek alternative arrangements like joining BRICS. This is a short sighted comment on Taiwan popularity in EU in fact in terms of Trade between the Two countries , Taiwan is EU’s 15th biggest trading partner in 2018. and fourth trade partner after China, the USA and Japan. In 2018, Taiwan was the EU's seventh largest trading partner in Asia. EU exports to Taiwan of semi-finished products, machinery and transport equipment confirm the EU's position as an important industrial supplier for Taiwan's industry. In terms of the size of exports and imports, office telecommunications equipment, machinery, transport equipment and chemicals are by far the most traded commodities between the EU and Taiwan. Taiwanese imports of services from the EU are dominated by transportation, business, travel and financial services. Taiwanese exports of services to the EU are dominated by sea transportation and business services. In recent years the EU has been the major source of foreign direct investment in Taiwan. China won't tell Saudi Arabia how to conduct themselves. In all honesty, I truly believe China believes in the UN project and that one day, nations will truly defer international scale problems like wars and economic disasters to the UN. But not so long as USA can act unilaterally like a hegemon. That is the first step in fighting imperialism. Not Yemen or Kashmir, but right in the heart, the US. When US finally realizes that now, it has to come and sit at the table as a guest and not a host, the world will open up to all of these issues.

Just to add here India isn’t really all that “anti-imperialist” they behave exactly like the aggressive colonizers towards Kashmir, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sikkim (which they occupied). They joined BRICS not due to their principles, but because they have higher ambitions. I think Modi might have a vision to make “India great again” the same way Trump promised US dominance over the rest of the world. Hence their recent moon landing. India acted as the local agent for the US for a long time and now they want to take the driver’s seat directly. Don’t be surprised if you see them doing exactly what the US has been doing to their Middle Eastern enemies and what France is doing in Africa. They are not the colonizers because they still can’t afford to.

This was a really interesting discussion. I think BRICS is a good development because the UN was getting to powerful, BRICS will take some power away from the UN and WEF. Hopefully also, US taxpayers won’t have to give out any more loans or aid, since the large countries in BRICS can take charge of loans and aid. It sounds like it will be a little bit like the EU. I hope the developing countries can work together, and their economies grow. That’s good for everyone.

Yes U N and WEF have to be careful in the dealings of the world’s problems and promote multilateralism and fairness for every country regardless of grobal north or grobal south If the grobal south feels being further exploited and even subjugated they have the possibility of these countries forming another alternative United Nations to address and solve their own problems Then the present UN can become redundant to many underdeveloped and developing countries

Gold exchange is easier said than done because gold price is determine is generally inversely related to the value of the U.S. dollar because the metal is dollar-denominated. However BRICS will have its own Gold price index but should be competitive with western price index , a stronger U.S. dollar tends to keep the price of gold lower and , while a weaker U.S. dollar is likely to drive the price of gold higher through increasing demand this is where the law of supply demand comes in thus for wholesale gold trading is quite complex and constantly evolving. Third nations were hardened with three basic ingredients for economic development; Scarcity of Capital, excess in unskilled Manpower and unstable political system like in the African continent and part of Asia. BRICS should prove to the world foreign investment is safe. The three most important gold trading centers are the London OTC market, the US futures market and the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE). These markets comprise more than 90% of global trading volumes and are complemented by smaller secondary market centers. The 70% of Gold Jewelries consumers are from the Western Nations not from from from third world nations.

Could never understand why South Africa was invited in ahead of Egypt and (in particular) Nigeria when bric wanted to bring in an African member and they became brics. (Nor could many economist and political scientist acquaintances at the time. Nor even could O'Neill himself.) (Yes, China pressed for SA putatively wanting to reward SA for, among other things, severing its historic ties with Taiwan. But presumably didn't look at other, much bigger players, in Africa.) SA was and remains a _tiny, tiny_ minnow both economically and in population, compared with the others, and compared with those several other African countries (and with many of the other countries on the waiting list). For ex, pop-wise, Nigeria over 220 M. more than Brazil, growing rapidly and on track to overtake Pakistan, Indonesia and USA into 3rd spot behind India and China not too far ahead. Good to see Ethiopia and of course Egypt are to join. But still waiting for Nigeria to appear on the scene.

12:40 - To emphasize this point, every single geopolitical hingepoint outlined by psycho cold-warrior Zbigniew Brzezinski in The Grand Chessboard has been pushed to reorient their allegiance and inevitably so. In fact there was one line I remember that I couldn't not laugh at while rereading it, really highlighting the geopolitical game of whack-o-mole that created the transiently useful but extremely chaotic and short-lived illusion of the so-called "American century" of global dominance that cultivated such hubris to imagine this depravity (implicitly recognized in the acknowledgement that "complementary grievances" _would_ indeed exist and have to be managed) could ever be stabilized with enough supposed "geostrategic skill", _"Potentially, the most dangerous scenario would be a grand coalition of China, Russia, and perhaps Iran, an "antihegemonic" coalition united not by ideology but by complementary grievances. It would be reminiscent in scale and scope of the challenge once posed by the Sino-Soviet bloc, though this time China would likely be the leader and Russia the follower. Averting this contingency, however remote it may be, will require a display of U.S. geostrategic skill on the western, eastern, and southern perimeters of Eurasia simultaneously."_ - pg.52 Oops! lol... The oppressive, capitalist Western hegemony exists only by force; forcing half the human race into your selfish, extortion-like way of life will inevitably lead to resistance/repercussions. Oppressed states and their vast populous are waking up and fighting back this very moment. Deal with it. People aren't slaves. We want to live freely and within our dignity.

You may even laugh your @ss off, the thing is, the West (as in the US) can no longer handle being a hegemon himself turning into a loose cannon instead. And don't be fooled, the better life outside the West exists, even though the West refuses to acknowledge that.

always enjoy listening to Marxist/Socialist views although i dont subscribe to every point of these ideologies. At least most views and arguments seem reasonable from some of these guests. And love Rania and Eugene...so knowledgeable. I listen to Globalists as well and it's shocking to see/hear how these unelected technocrats' ego is so big that they actually believe themselves to be the World's saviours. However, your guest today stating (paraphrased) that 'it's worrisome that far-right governments are forming etc..' and framing Italy's Meloni as 'far right', really? Because she's outspoken, common sensical, believes in faith, family, italian culture and secure borders? Which of her policies are 'far right'? These are democracies are they not?!Where people are clearly fed up idiotic/destructivevneo lib/socialist policies and show their discontent by voting, overwhelningly, for someon who shares their sentiment. Are her and leaders like her, now being compared to Mussolini and Hitler, 'far right'? What utter nonsense. Afterall, so far Marxists/Socialists/Neo-Communists are not being framed as the second coming of Pol Pot. She is right of Center at best. Get over yourselves.

No. It can't be. The likelihood that BRICS even becomes an actual alliance is even more ridiculous given the high disparities between each country, both at a GDP per capita level, and at an overall level as well, given how one country in that group has a larger economy than the rest by a frankly absurd degree. Moreover, its members are actively antagonists towards each other, for how else would you call India's relationship with China, given it is a part of the "Quad," a military collaborative organization with the quite apparent goal of reigning in China. I understand why these pieces are made, but it doesn't stop frustrating me, and calling yourself a "news source" clearly isn't true either, given how little you've chosen to actually interrogate the people you elect to have on here, or state rather obvious events in the world today. Be better.

Indian communist once used to be big force in India politics and indian governance, now they reduced to one state local politics and that is also because there is a lack of alternative which is not divisive like hindutuva BJP. How do you sit there and claim that China does not have any imperialist ambition, just a day after China released map claiming territories of India, Philippines and Vietnam as their own? First of all Tibet is not even chinese territory, it is an occupied territory based on reason that imperialist Qing china once supposedly colonized Tibet. And yet, he sits here and lectures that how China does not have imperial ambition. This is why the so called communist of India went totally irrelevant in India. If China is not a imperialist nation and have no imperial ambition, they will immediately leave occupied Tibet and recognize Tibet as Independent nation and will respect Tibetan people.

@North_Lights. Let me summarised it for you. 1. Tibetan migrated from north east China. It invade the Yangtze plains and vice versa. Tibet has been with the Middle Kingdom since the Qing Dynasty since 17th centuries way before the America come into being way before British colonise India. 2. The South China Seas island are disputed island . Why other countries also claiming islands .yet you say China is imperialist. Furthermore, China has the strongest claim i.e. under the treaty of Taipei.Japan return all these island to China. Vietnam and Phillipine. Free yourself from western propaganda . Change mindset. USa is bad, China is good.

India and China both agree on a Asian century or Multipolar world. The problem China keeps on intruding into Indian sovereign territory. They have renamed parts of Indian territory to chinese names. Also they have also stolen territory which is Aksai Chin from the 1962 war. China at UN vetoed move to designate 26/11 accused Sajid Mir as global terrorist as way of being nuance toward India because of political problems. So , the question is does China want peace with India not the other way around.
