BOTC are now automatically British Citizens too, so they can freely come here but we can't go there. One reason may be small rich places like Bermuda that you mentioned and the Caymen islands wouldnt want to be overrun with brits an BOTC from other overseas territories looking for employment. Also very small places like Pitcairn have a unique way of life.

For Gibraltar you do need a permit. To get one you either need to have a job in Gibraltar or proof of self sufficiency (which includes self-funded health insurance). You can sort it out after arriving there, but it is hard to get accommodation (also a requirement) without a job offer/contract.

So, looks like the French got something right, while we were shortsighted. Thanks for this information. I think that the French got it right and our lot got it wrong. I would love to be able to move to one of those BOT with nice weather and I don't mind if they want to come live here in the cold. Am happy to swap places 😁

Speaking as a Caribbean man whose parents were from two former British colonies it doesn't benefit any Caribbean island still being a British colony there are no benefits for any Caribbean island to remain as a British colony

Likewise Gibraltar citizens are full British citizens, not overseas territory citizens, and have right of abode in the UK. I assume Guernsey has the same reciprocal agreement.

It's not only about passport it's also about voting rights. Everyone in the french overseas territories with a french ID and with voting rights ( above 18 with civil rights) is entitled to vote for local elections but also for national elections ! The Tahitian vote for the president's elections ! Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guyana, Reunion and Mayotte Islands are in fact french departments like the french mainland departments. New Caledonia, Polynesia are french territories with french citizenship but also have local administration and only the local can vote for them.

Yes I can get on a plane and go live in Réunion or Guadeloupe tomorrow. I have a Romanian passport. I don't know how this would work for French Polynesia or Bora Bora though

The reason is simple; British Overseas Territories are self governing and free to make their own immigration rules.

Thats not it. Thats not it at all. They are not the ones who make those rules. The UK does. If the UK wants to change the policy they can change it tonight, The territories dont decide that at all.

U.S citizens can move to the U.S virgin islands and live and work there but UK citizens cannot move to British Virgin Islands and live there. It makes no sense at all. And to the person who will say its because these territories' are small well the U.S virgin islands are small and yet Americans can move there so the size is not the reason

I'm French Caribbean and I ttly agree. Anyone with an EU passport can relocate to a French OT, due to Schengen rule. Ironically, when the UK was in the EU, it was easier for a British citizen to relocate on a French OT than a BOT 😂😂😂 As a matter of fact, I knew a Mainland UK-born Australian guy who was in a hurry to relocate to my island (before Brexit) since he it didn't like it in London at all. But, I didn't even know the different passports neither or the visa policy ... It doesn't make sense in 2024...it's weird, honest

Why would we they would fit in much better here and there’s only about 200 of them a year, we should probably get them to move to scotland as it is very sparsely populated up there

Actually, I'm French, born in Paris but originally from the a French Caribbean oversea territory and I relocated there at the age of 5-6 years old. It's actually always a bit messy culturally and in terms of governance. But, yes the "territorial continuity" of the French system makes it no brainer to live where you want on the entire French territory, regardless of the geographic situation. Same in Italy. People from mainland can come for holidays and decide to stay a few months, a few years or for ever... or the other way around. The government doesn't care. Except if you work in public services, locals have priority on certain jobs (teaching in public schools etc.), if you're in the private sector, than none of this matters. You just need your ID, no passport required. I'm so impatient to get to know Gibraltar. I'm London-based. I'd love to relocate for a few months ❤❤❤ Thanks for the video

The only downside when you give exclusivity like the French is that it creates a back door for unwanted immigration

It's due to size and u.k government policy. The ots were stripped of british citizenship back in 1981, because of the future handing over of Hong Kong was soon coming, 5 million people lived in hk and Britain didn't want 5 million of them flocking over before the handover to China, so the uk and crown colonies citizenship was changed to several layers of citizenship. When hk was given to China this policy of different citizenship didn't change. It took until 2002 for return of British citizenship and the ots can't stay or work in the uk with a those other lower British citizenship options unless they apply for full British citizenship. It was about 5 million people in hk. Quite a xenophobic law.
