Paddle-shifted transmissions have come a long way since their clunky and slow beginnings. But as stick shift cars become rarer and more expensive, is it worth swapping out the transmission? In this video, we follow the owner of a 2008 Audi R8 as they explore the costs, time, and difficulty of swapping out their transmission. Whether you own a classic BMW, Supra, 240SX, Mustang, or an exotic like a Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Audi, these lessons apply. Learn if a transmission swap is worth it for your car.
Watch the details of the swap here: / @ftwgarage
*How much a manual swap costs, and how long it will take, depend on the car.

In my garage is a 2008 R8 with gated manual. And yes, it makes all the difference. The tactile and auditory pleasure of the snick-snick sound and spring weighted feel of the shifter is unlike anything else. And the car is more comfortable than almost anything else in its class. I've loved my 911s but the R8 is more unique and more rare. Only challenge is scrapping the front splitter on driveway transitions which interferes with daily driver capabilities. The suspension can be soft enough for freeway intercity trips but firms up nicely with a button push on the console. Absent a financial crisis, I will never part with my R8!

The two things you don’t get when buying a manual (or having it done), is the bond with the car you develop when doing the work yourself and the sense of achievement when succesfully completing the project. So is it worth all the work and time to save a little money? Imo, yes.

Great video. Congrats to the owner for doing the swap. I bought a gated V10 manual back in 2021. The premium for a gated manual V10 vs an R-tronic V10 was close to $50k for similar mileage. The V8 gated manual is great as well. Different sound but still great.

Such a great video. Big respect to Mark for undertaking such an intimidating project and succeeding. In his case I think it made a lot of sense to spend $10K to swap it because like he said seliing the car and buying another you have to deal with tax and reg (not to mention possibly losing any mods or difference in spec between cars). Also it sounds like he just wasn't at the right financial position to buy a manual at the onset. Honestly I respect that a lot and I'm glad to see the V8 getting respect since people only talk about the V10.

It’s a great blend of visceral fun driving with usability and reliability. My v10 gated 06 Gallardo is a blast even tho lots of newer faster cars, they all just get too digital. Yes it’s blocky but still an iconic wedge and has amazing street presence. Plus the high pitch v10 wail is epic. There are less than 700 known gated manual Gallardos in the USA.

The main benefit when it comes to the V8s is finding the right spec in my opinion. They were lower production to begin with, and is the cheaper spec even afterwards, so people tend to not option them well with all the carbon and such. Gaining the ability to be flexible in which one you get increases the color options and everything that you can look at. I had the V10 in manual and it's a fantastic car. Zack also brings up a great point regarding DCTs and how a good DCT is fun, but still a different experience. I was a manual-only guy for a while, then recently tried an amazing DCT and I finally saw why people enjoy those cars a lot as well. If you're considering between a non-GTS or GT 911 and the R8, I'd say go for the R8 unless you need the rear seats. It's a much more exciting car and you can't go wrong with the gated shifter.

I almost did one with my 350Z and then just decided to sell it and get a manual - then two months later had to put a new clutch in it haha. So in the end I had almost wished I had just done the swap, but I'm lazy.

🔥🔥I have to agree that a good manual transmission makes any powerful vehicle more enjoyable to drive. Though during the eighties i decided to have one of my vehicles installed with a newly built LT1 350 power plant and drive train. I also chose a Mr-Gasket ratchet shifter so that I could choose the Revs for changing gears. Then behind that i chose an electronic Doug-Nash Overdrive enabling the Turbo-405 automatic transmission to have longer legs. Of-course i wanted it to be quicker than any snappy transmission on the streets, simply by having a SHIFT-KIT installed into the Turbo-405. It definitely needed careful adjustment to make sure it wasn't too severe on the drive-shaft Universal Joints, but I'll tell what, there is No Way any manual transmission could ever shift as quickly, and I mean with full torque thrust and no backing off. ⚡️🌪 Maybe you'll hear about extreme stories on the professional dragstrip, but on the street, I rest my case.

I think that Zack is underestimating the impact of those extra 15-20k miles on the price of cars that typically don’t get driven a whole lot (though obviously an R8 could and should). Seems like that sort of mileage difference could easily add another $10-15k to the price, so all else being equal, the gated manual surcharge is more like in the $25k range.
