Catholic Bible Highlights with Kenny Burchard

Күн бұрын

"Sinners Prayer" evangelists often ask Catholics if they "know for sure" if they're saved, and whether or not they've said the sinner's prayer and "asked Jesus into their heart." They will often point to 1 John 5:13 as the best verse to prove that simply believing in Jesus should assure us of certain salvation and eternal security. But is that what this verse (or the entire letter of 1 John) actually teaches? We'll look at this entire epistle and highlight 18 verses to find the answers!

That makes since now. I have made comments towards protestant with kindness and friendly manner. It got to the point where they couldn't refute what Scriptures said about the topic of "The Catholic church being the 1 one true church." Then next day it seems like I'm talking to my self. But you can still see my comments but the other guy disappeared. I felt like I had wasted much energy there. That's why I rather not comment anymore or do rebuttals on comment sections. Thank you for disclosing that.

Hi Kenny, I cannot begin to thank you enough for making these videos. I am 57 years old and have been a Catholic all of my life who truly didn’t understand a lot of our faith and just how much it IS rooted in Scripture, and about five years ago, I had some family (Pentecostals) come into my life (some are former Catholics), and I have been exposed to a lot of the things you you are describing challenging the Catholic doctrines, and I am learning so much from you. I am so grateful to God for these family members as they have truly helped me in developing a true love of reading Scripture and seeking God in a way I never did before, but it has also caused me a lot of confusion so these teachings are so valuable in helping me to understand. God Bless you and thank you again, I would love if you could do a teaching one day about the Blessed Mother as that is another subject I would so appreciate your doing this kind of teaching on. Thank you again and God Bless you always, Kenny. 🙏🙏🙏

I wonder where this "Harry Potter (type) incantation" (sinner's prayer)is in the Bible or Church history. And where is its proof of absolute effetiveness (regardless of intention or belief)?
@KennyBurchard
@KennyBurchard 11 күн бұрын
It's not in the Bible, per se. It's based on a few verses in the Bible about confessing and believing in Jesus and turned into a prayer. Sadly, it is not how becoming a Christian is ever presented in the Bible. Nobody ever said, "Repeat this prayer after me and you can be sure you'll go to heaven." Never. Catholics are often ridiculed for inventing unbiblical traditions and practices. There is a huge blind spot among sinners-prayer evangelists about this very man-made tradition.

One of the things I’m struggling with (I was raised Mormon and later in life became a Methodist. Catholic for almost a year now) is how to utilize the saints with prayer. I never actually have asked for their intercession before I solely pray to God because I am unsure how to incorporate the saints and Mary. Anyone have advice or guidance? I got to mass 2 times a week and I’m a very shy person so I’ve never actually talked with anyone about it I had questions in RCIA but never asked them.

I have formal daily prayers. For my intentions, I will ask Mary or my patron saint to pray for me. Mary for the domestic things and my patron saint to pray for her "specialty".
@clivejames5058
@clivejames5058 11 күн бұрын
I felt the same for years although I did pray the Rosary. I never felt the need to ask for a Saint's intercession and that's OK because it's not something you have to do. However, one day I watched a film about Franz Jägerstätter, An Austrian farmer who refused to swear allegiance to Hitler during WWII. It's an extremely powerful and beautiful film (A Hidden Life). Afterwards, I found myself including Franz in my prayers as I was so shocked at his bravery and where it had led him in life. I had a real sense that he could hear me, quietly and it was a good and warm feeling. I suppose my point is perhaps wait until a Saint comes into your life. Maybe via someone's story, a book, a film and when you study them further, you have an empathetic connection with their lives and what they did for Christ. Having said that, of course, if you want to approach Our Blessed Mother, just one decade of the Rosary is a good place to start - the Apostles Creed with one Our Father and 10 Hail Mary prayers. You can even buy one decade Rosaries. I have one in my pocket and whenever I can - might be just standing in line at the supermarket - I reach into my pocket and silently say the prayers.

@Jordanx9 As a Catholic, it is wonderful that you are able to make it to mass beyond the Sunday obligation. Perhaps you can use the daily mass as an introduction to the Saints. The easiest way to incorporate Saints into your prayer routine is to first learn more about them and to recognize them as your elder brother and sisters in Christ. Many daily masses have memorials of a specific saint. In a resource like The Magnificat (in print or online), they list and give brief descriptions of the Saint of the Day for most days. They also have a short write-up of a "Saint who ...." This month are Saints who worked in Agriculture. This resource is something you have to pay for, but I enjoy it because it includes the morning prayer, mass readings, a meditation of the day, evening prayer, night prayer, and other resources throughout the month. There are also many free resources online. Being Catholic does not mean you have to ask the Saints to pray for you, but I love the Church's teaching on the Communion of Saints. The Church is so much bigger than just those alive today. As Fr. Michael Gaitely says, "Heaven is not a spectator sport." You can pick a Saint and take a deep dive into their life or learn a little about many Saints. Choose whichever feels better to you. You might want to start with your Confirmation Saint. I also like the online Saint Name Generator to find a special Saint for a particular prayer request. You could also ask God to introduce you to a Saintly friend in Heaven. I hope God Blesses you today and always. May your walk with Christ go deeper with each passing day.

I always answer, "Yes...I was saved, I am being saved, and I will be saved." I was saved at my baptism at 2 weeks old. I'm being saved by abiding in Jesus, doing His work in union with and as the Body of Christ. And, I will be saved by enduring in the Faith to the end. I've also been offered many helps with this along the way. Christians call them Sacraments.

Thoughts on where being filled with the Holy Spirit during a conversion or reconciliation comes into play? Is it necessary for a true conversion or being "saved"? I was raised in church and was "saved" and baptized as a child, but through bad religious teaching and my own bad choices I fell away from God. I became scared to pray or even ask forgiveness bc I was convinced that God was angry with me and no longer loved me. During one of the darkest times of my life in my mid 20's I happened upon a book called The Ragamuffin Gospel that told of God and Jesus' neverending Love and Mercy. I learned that God never leaves us or stops loving us, rather it is us who leave God. I had a DEEP reconciliation with the Lord, and was filled with the Spirit. I can only describe it as feeling like I was surrounded by a golden light of joy, and I truly understood what "the Peace that surpasses all understanding" was. All day I prayed during whatever I was doing, and spoke with Jesus just as I would my best friend (and so He is). I understood the Scriptures I read and how they applied, and developed a deep insight/intuitiveness into the motivations and feelings of others. Anytime I am feeling low, I always think of that time and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God is still with me and His Promises are real. Yet, I know, too, that I still have to live in such a way that is pleasing to God and avoid sin (not always easy in this broken world). Do all true Christians go through an experience like this? If not, why? Why some and not others? Really enjoy your show as I am currently in OCIA, and love learning more every day ❤

Look at Mat 24. Everyone suffers and after the days of suffering, Jesus sends His angels. Also Mat 24 says that it will be like the days of Noah. In the days of Noah, the righteous 8 were saved, all the lost died. The righteous 8 were "left behind". Read the whole chapter. Towards the end it says, "where the corpse lies, the vultures (or eagles depending on translation) gather. The believing righteous are the ones kept safe and "left behind".

Paul did not believe in assurance of salvation. Even with a clear conscience, he left his salvation to the judgment of God. He did not see himself as being declared not guilty. And as you note, if God were judge, what would be the contingencies to measure judgment. Why be judged if you can pass go and collect $200? “I will not even pass judgement on myself. True, my conscience does not reproach me at all, but that does not prove that I am acquitted: the Lord alone is my judge.” 1 Cor 4

Sir. Thanks. Permit this ol’ reprobate (but returned) his Bible story. A while back, riding to (oil field) locations with senior engineer, a VERY devout Baptist - you know, great vacation was 2 weeks in some jungle medical mission. While I was on the rig floor, he sat in the car. He being …fidgety… found the Bible I was purposed to read cover to cover. It was a “Good News” style paper back, Catholic edition. First several O.T. Books missing. Guy was impressed I was doing it, but wanted to know about the missing Books. I suppressed the notion to say, “I’m R.C., of course I removed the…” but I told the truth that I often lost my place and developed a technique to keep from backing up. So I read him the page that was up, tore it out, started the next page. …. I DID NOT KNOW a person could choke on air. I thought I’d have to Heimlich the guy!

Matthew 25:34-46 [34]Then the King shall say to those who will be on his right: 'Come, you blessed of my Father. Possess the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. [35]For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in; [36]naked, and you covered me; sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me.' [37]Then the just will answer him, saying: 'Lord, when have we see you hungry, and fed you; thirsty, and given you drink? [38]And when have we seen you a stranger, and taken you in? Or naked, and covered you? [39]Or when did we see you sick, or in prison, and visit to you?' [40]And in response, the King shall say to them, 'Amen I say to you, whenever you did this for one of these, the least of my brothers, you did it for me.' [41]Then he shall also say, to those who will be on his left: 'Depart from me, you accursed ones, into the eternal fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels. [42]For I was hungry, and you did not give me to eat; I was thirsty, and you did not give me to drink; [43]I was a stranger and you did not take me in; naked, and you did not cover me; sick and in prison, and you did not visit me.' [44]Then they will also answer him, saying: 'Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to you?' [45]Then he shall respond to them by saying: 'Amen I say to you, whenever you did not do it to one of these least, neither did you do it to me.' [46]And these shall go into eternal punishment, but the just shall go into eternal life."

It’s a topic I have in mind. In the meantime you can remind them Jesus does nothing without his one-flesh partner, the Church. That includes saving people for to be saved they must be joined to his body (she is that body). Outside of her then there is no salvation.

Are we really saved by just faith alone, the foundation doctrine of the reformation? So, how many times have you heard and even said yourself that "salvation is by faith ALONE and not by works"? Aren't we told to test all things? Perhaps we should try to find such the actual vs in scripture with supporting cross references! We have often heard various versions of it put this way: "There is no time requirement on saving faith. Even if a person only believes for a short while he still has eternal salvation" Robert Wilkin. "If faith justifies us without works let us work nothing... Idol Faith is not justifying faith". Martin Luther "We are justified by Faith alone but not a faith that is alone" John Owen To the GotQuestions version: if we are all perpetual sinners, how much disobedience is allowed, before it shows a person has a false faith? Do you disobey Christ rarely, 10% of the time, 50% of the time? How many times will it take "the righteous person to turn from his righteousness and sin, to lose his life" as scripture says? Obviously if you believe the Bob Owen version, then you don't have to worry about how much "good works" e.g. acts of charity, self denial, tithing etc will show you have true, saving faith…! As pastor Alan Parr has iterated, "if you were arrested would there be enough evidence to convict you of being a Christian"? Doesn't a tree have to produce apples to prove it is an apple tree! Have you skipped church for no good reason, lost your temper and/or still committing personal sins you don't want people to know about? Are you producing enough good fruit to show you have a saving faith as in the parable of the True Vine or will you be cut off and thrown in the fire? (John 15) So how does one distinguish with any certainty, between our good fruits and the bad, that prove we have a saving faith? 2 Cor 5 10 Matt 16 27 Rom 2 6. Are some of the sins we are committing more serious than others! Owen says you don't have to worry about sinning, just not to like what you are doing or failing to do. Is that a kind of gnostic view where the soul is disassociated from our sinful flesh? Parr says "you only have to sense the holy Spirit is working in your life to know you are truly saved" So, as long as you feel bad about ur sins you'll be okay, Eh? No Protestant seems to be able to tell me what good works will show you have a saving faith. How many ad hoc qualifications do Protestant need to add to sola fide to prove they are truly saved? Through the sacrament of baptism which is initial salvation and then through reconciliation Catholics believe they must continually face their sinfulness and seek forgiveness while persevering to the very end. My final observation:- what will you say when ur standing before the judgment seat of Christ and asked to account for all your deeds done in the flesh, both your good works and bad? 2 Cor 5 10 Matt 16 27 Rom 2 6. Or are you going to say " but I was saved when I was 27 and never needed saving again?"

I'm looking for NRSV CE bible that fulfill these three conditions: Leather cover (not leather soft, not leatherette), single column, size similar to the Douay-Rheims from Saint Benedict Press (5.5 x 8 inches). Any links would be greatly appreciated :) Oh, I almost forgot. Another great video Kenny! :)

If anybody says i am saved. That person who has free will, would not be able to commit a sin for the rest of their lives. Could you do that ? Saying "I am already saved " is telling God, not to bother judging me because i know where i am going. That person is actually committing a sin of presumption against Hope

@@KennyBurchard Reformed Covenantal! My question is are we saved off of what we as Believers do or what Jesus Christ has already done for us?
@KennyBurchard
@KennyBurchard 11 күн бұрын
@Eric-nx2jz - The Biblical answer is we are saved by Jesus and what he has done for us. The way we are saved by Jesus and what he has done for us is, as Scripture teaches, being Baptized into the name of the Father, and the Son and The Holy Spirit, and obeying everything he taught, or "The Obedience of Faith" (Mat. 29:18-20, 2 Thes. 1:8,9, Rom. 1:5, 16:26). We are NOT saved by the works of the Jewish/Mosaic Law (circumcision, etc.). That is Heresy (Eph. 2:5-9). But we are also not saved by "faith alone" or "faith without works" (which are different from works of the Mosaic law). That is heresy too. (James 2:24, James 2:17). The gift of God is the way of Salvation by Jesus and through his cross. We cannot be his disciples if we do not pick up our cross and follow behind him. By his gracious gift, he opens the way of salvation to all who come to God through him. But it is not by simply saying a prayer and holding or retaining a cognitive belief in our minds. Belief, in the Bible, is faith working by love, and that (according to Paul) is "all that matters." (Gal. 5:6). Protestants are quick to point out "not of works" and Catholics agree 100%. Paul has in mind (there, in Galatians, and elswhere) the works of the Mosaic law (especially circumcision) -- NOT works that look like obedience to Jesus. For without obedience to Jesus, we cannot claim to be Christians (2 Thes. 1:8-10, Jn. 14:23-24). Jesus saves those who obey him.

@@KennyBurchard Important to note that the "not by works lest any man boast" in the oft quoted Ephesians 2:8--9 ignores verse 10 which says "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." Which makes it clear that if we are "created in Christ Jesus" (saved) we will be doing "good works" (works of love) that we might walk with God. I wonder why they never quote verse 10?

I have two notetaking Bibles and my RSV2CE does not mention "these things". Neither does the Jerusalem Bible, I compared all the Catholic translations in Verbum. I do want to get the NRSVce notetaking Bible at some point. But I will use the NABRE until I do. I'm sure it is a translation error but knowing Protestants, they wouldn't believe me if I used that version.

Yeah the NIV, NASB, ESV, NKJV, and others use these things or this. In most cases your Protestant friend’s Bible will have it that way. “What is the THIS” that John has written?
@KennyBurchard

It’s the Greek work Tauta which is a plural pronoun so “this” indicates all that has been written before the verse. “These things” is better.
