Hi Kenny This is just what I needed to hear. I was raised Anglican and became Catholic when married. (Almost 44 years). I also work for a church. That experience hasn't always been the most positive. I've pulled back and haven't been to mass in awhile. Listening to you made me really look at what was going on inside. I need to spend more time in prayer to learn. Thank you for your video.

Welcome home; what a wonderful story. I too am a former protestant pastor who has returned to the Catholic Church with my family. Our protest is over. I believe God is assembling His people for His glorious return soon.

I never thought of it this way before. This is a great analogy of how we differ in the way we read and perceive the scriptures. I have always been Catholic, but began to actually take my faith seriously at the age of 23. For the first 20+ years of living out my faith, I believed that the scriptures were the one place where one can find the absolute truth and it was the ultimate authority for the Christian. God spoke to us, to me, directly through His word. It was because of this understanding that I firmly believed that the Evangelical protestant world was a far better place to receive your theological understanding of the Christian life and the truest meaning of the gospel. In the past 10 years, I’ve been watching videos and reading books put out by MANY ex evangelical pastors such as Kenny and without even realizing it, I have come to read the Bible in a different way. I now notice that God is not always speaking to me so directly, but instead we are seeing how Jesus is starting a Church and giving certain individuals authority over His Church. Thank you Kenny for this video. It is extremely helpful as I currently attend two Bible studies. The Catholic Bible study has several Evangelicals who attend and the other one is in an Evangelical church and I am the only Catholic there (I must admit that began to attend the Evangelical Bible study because I was hoping that they would try and convert me). I now can put two and two together and can actualize where they are coming from because of how you have shown me my Evangelical friends mindset and why it is so hard for them, as it was for me, to see that our Lord actually started a church and gave a group of individuals authority to oversee His Church.

On reflection if I shot this video again I would differentiate between unbroken and broken 4th wall instead of 3 Walls vs. broken 4th wall but it was a pretty spontaneous video to get the big idea out while I was having it.

Thanks for this Kenny. This was very much my life for many years and goes to the heart of disagreements with my evangelical friends. How would you suggest approaching this though. Because I don’t see my evangelical friends seeing a problem with breaking the 4th wall. Sure, we’ve identified the reason we come to different interpretations but I don’t see that we’re any closer to resolving that.
@atrifle8364

The problem involves reading comprehension and ego. Read something closer to mortgage documents, it's not hard to at least see the Catholic view in the NT However Protestantism trains people to take a letter clearly addressed to some guy named Timothy, ignore 100% of the context, and apply 2 sentences at random to themselves. It's hard thing to get them to say "No, let's start by assuming that this a letter to Timothy." We have to start with the disappointing and humbling news that maybe Paul didn't have them personally in mind and that matters.

Hi Greg. Yeah it was my life too and now on the other side of it it is more clear to me than before. I think as a starting place we can simply point out the interpretive approach and try to get them to agree that it is different and since it is different we can make thre observations. 1. We cannot agree on the meaning of a text if we employ disparate hermeneutics. 2. The fact that such differences are possible when 2 Christians are looking at one text is a strike against Sola Scriptura. 3. Since these are true, we might look at the witness of the early Christians to see if they agree with one or the other interpreter. In the case of these texts all the early witnesses will appeal to authority vested in the apostles and their successors. You can also say in terms that may foster more contemplation and dialogue: We Catholics read the Bible in its original context. You seem to be doing something different from that. This will sound like a strike at the heart of a “Bible only” Christian who doesn’t think they do that. Simply point it out and rest on the solid witness of the Church. Leave the burden of proof on later novel interpretations.

@@atrifle8364yeah I agree. To be fair to anyone who sat under my teaching ministry (especially in the early years), I unfortunately encouraged and even modeled this flawed hermeneutic, and people sadly embraced it.

@@KennyBurchard- It's tough because that way of interacting with the Bible is built into the framework of the culture. Even Luther's original "epiphany" is more or less taking sentences out of Romans out of context. He had a lot less excuses though than people almost 500 years later. He was trained Catholic and was completely aware of passages in James, etc that contradicted his own somewhat electic theology. Most modern Protestants are trained decontextulized sentence reading approach from Day 1. Despite many self assurances on their Biblical knowledge, it's quite clear many spend their most of their time in a few select parts of Scripture. In that there is a great deal less culpability. But those practices makes the conversation much difficult, even when I have a letter from James clearly addressing a general audience as foolish for believing in faith alone. It's undoing an unquestioned process/approach.

@@KennyBurchard the ironic thing is many protestants will argume against breaking the 4th wall in other passages. For example, I've heard reformed folks say that applying Jeremiah 29:11 to ourselves and claiming that promise for ourselves is taking the verse out of context because God was specifically addressing that to Israel in exile.

Are you still Catholic? I jumped in too fast and got scared because of a statue of mary being brought in from mexico for special honor. I left tge church but now i think like many of the things in my life, ive been acting out of fear instead of faith. I really want to honor the Lord and the honor of a special statue of rock just really reminded me too much of idol worship, especially the back story of Mary appearances that bring attention to Mary as the central Savior instead of Christ.

I've been blessed to be born Catholic and Irish 😂 while most of my life I sadly took my beautiful faith for granted I have been Pulled home just before covid By Our Lord, thank you Jesus 🙏 I don't know how I lived without The Holy Eucharist and The Holy Mass all those years, I could not live without it now though. He Never Gives Up on us, Does He ❤ Every single time I walk into our beautiful Cathedral I know with every fibre of my being that I am where I am meant to be. Us born Catholics take that for granted and it's stories like yours that reminds us how really blessed we are 🙏 We are absolutely delighted to have you with us and please God we will all meet in Heaven with Our Lord. God bless you 🙏

Converted in 2012. When I told my 85 year old fundamentalist mom, she said was obviously disappointed and her response was "I wish you would have become a Christian". I spent the next 10 years trying to educate her, but her response was ultimately, to each his own. When she died, I read her journal which contained her prayers, which included many asking God to show me the heresy in "idol worship ", and all the other stuff protestants think we believe or practice. She was too old to listen, but we were always very close and prayed together before she passed.

The Cathechism led me back to Rome. It answered all of my “What is life” I bounced protesting denominations looking for Veritas- Truth. Each Christian church had a ray or so of Truth but also glaring contradictions of the Bible and teachings of the Fathers of the ancient Church. The Catechism answered my question, provided a sure way to be transformed in Christ and and a guide to serve Him with all my heart, soul and mind- my very being. Christ founded one holy, Catholic (universal, worldwide) Church. The gates of hell have not, and will not prevail against Holy Mother Church. Xristos Anesti. Alithos Anesti
