Can Celine still sting? Will one of the greatest singers of our time lip sync from now on? In this video, I (a contemporary voice specialist) analyse Celine Dion's journey from pre to post diagnosis of Stiff Person's Syndrome. I offer some explantations as to how this neurological condition may have impacted her world famous vocal technique and the effects of the way she is choosing to mitigate it.

If we are meeting for the first time, HELLO GORGEOUS! I'm Lolli, a voice teacher and vocal anatomy nerd specialising in contemporary techniques. I have a degree in vocal performance, and I am studying for a masters degree in voice pedagogy. I sing aaaall the time! Pop, jazz, rock, metal, soul, Hindustani, Carnatic and I am constantly learning and practising new vocal skills. I just bloody love singing. It's my favourite thing in the whole world, and because I love you, I want you to sing too.
I believe everyone can sing, and my mission with this channel is to break down techniques that are so often portrayed as something to be exclusively accessed by people with a special talent. Well. Special talents can be learnt, and I am here to teach them to you.

Oh I absolutely love this. Once upon a time I was a classically trained singer-never by profession-but singing was my therapy. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2006 and have since had many diagnoses added to that and survived stage 4 cancer as well. I hadn’t sung in several years when I discovered your channel. I have been playing around with some of the techniques you discuss in your videos and I have discovered my voice again. It is different, but there. I sing every day now even if just a little. I do hope that Ms. Dion can reinvent herself. I would still line up to see her. Thank you for being so encouraging Lolli. I hope Celine sees this somehow and goes on. She is absolutely fabulous and you are as well.❤️

This is the most heart-centered, empathetic, soul-shining, understanding, wise and wonderful analysis. I loved every minute of it. I learned a ton, as I always do from your videos, and cried multiple times, as I often also do from your videos for all the best, most therapeutic reasons. Lest you ever forget, you are also not an apple tree but the Sherwood Forest Oak, and the enormous body of amazing reactionalyses that you've already produced is a gift that keeps on giving. You truly are a Fairy Voice Mother, not only helping with our voices, but also helping us see our intrinsic worth. I really hope Celine gets to watch this video someday.

I wonder if Celine will somehow come upon this video. It would both show her how someone else in the business feels about her capabilities, but also how we (the public) don’t expect the very same thing she used to possess. Great video, very filled with The Fairy Voice Mother’s love.

Exactly what I was thinking. I wish Céline would realise that her fans like her for her character, her authenticity, her sense of humour and her beautiful, expressive soul just as much, if not MORE than her voice! I have sent her a letter saying just this, after I watched her documentary, but I will never know if she’s received it. But at the end of the interview that was shown in this video, the interviewer also says it when she tells Céline that her fans will take ANY version of Céline she can give - I just wish she could believe it! Lolli explains why Céline may feel that way and I agree, but Céline still hasn’t yet accepted that we won’t stop liking her, which was evident in her documentary when she says “Maybe I can sing another kind of repertoire? But then it’s going to be their choice to…still like me or not, you know”, and she looks so sad and deflated as she’s saying this! It’s heartbreaking! Then, at the end of her interview with Hoda Kotb when she says, “My vocal cords won’t scare me, because I’m going to be ready and I’m going to hit those notes” (referring to those notes/songs that Lolli talks about being her “apples”) and she admits that she’s worried that her fans have forgotten about her and how important they are to her.

Watching a 30 minute analysis on Celine Dion wasn't on my bingo card but thank you - I found it really insightful and inspiring. It's clear that singing in her signature style has become her whole identity but as we know, Johnny Cash proved that emotion was more important than technical delivery.

Nice to hear back from you Lolli... I think your Reactions are very unique and I don't believe many people understand how skilled and wonderfully trained YOU are. I'm your newest and perhaps biggest new Patreon fan! I have listened to hundreds of "REACTION" videos, and yours caught me. Not just the hilarious antics, funny quips, self deprecating humor, and vocal Anatomy Class (I love ALL that), its that behind all that you give us tiny clues in your REACTIONS just how vocally talented and trained YOU are. I am a huge Lara Fabian fan and am fortunate to have seen Celine live in Vegas, You are the only Vocal Coach (I prefer Artist) that can truly explain and, more importantly, DEMONSTRATE (my FIRST reaction to your "Caruso" reaction was "Holy shi..., SHE can sing, and I wasn't talking about LF) what it is about a specific song or singer that makes us all so captivated. I LOVED your Celine video and it just highlights YOUR talent. I can't tell you why I like one wine over another. I don't swirl it, I can't smell it and tell you what region of Italy or France or California it came from, I don't hold it up to the light nor watch it fall down the side of the glass. I just taste it and I know that I love it. With singers its different, I picked you over other Content providers because I see you can help us all understand WHY, when we've just loved a singer who tells a story every time they sing, who connects with a song and the audience for decades, who captivates us, gives us brief out of body experience, its time for THEM and US to just let go. This is even worse in most Professional sports because the average "sports life span" of a Professional athlete is less than 10 years. There are so many examples of this, and I would rather see them retire and move on to the next thing that they would inevitably be great at, inspiring new artists, commentating or becoming legendary sports analyst on a major network, contributing to global talent shows, etc. I want to just remember their greatness and legacy. Seeing this is heartbreaking. Your Newest Fan, KevinC

Thank God, you made the video about Celine that you did and I hope to have you don’t think I’m bashing her, but I’m glad she made that video because so many people don’t wanna believe that she did have a backing track and that was the performance that we saw, I am not blaming her. I know it’s not her fault. My heart breaks for her. I just wish people wouldn’t live in denial about that sort of stuff.

This was so interesting! I nearly didn't watch, never been a fan of Celine - I admire her talent, just not to my taste - but I have a whole new respect for her art and her dedication to it. It would be wonderful if she heeded your advice and - like Joni - was content to find new ways of using her voice because all that expression would still be there. Thanks, Lolli, for your insight and your sensitivity.

I came here from the Wings of Pegasus channel where someone mentioned this video. Very interesting and well done, plus appropriately sensitive and appreciative. This all makes me think of Johnny Cash performing "Hurt" in that music video which won a Grammy. I'm not even a Cash fan, but it was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen; far from "perfect", far from him at his "best", but none of that mattered. In fact it made for a better performance.

This was beautiful. What a life lesson. I felt ashamed of criticisms of her voice (the nasality) that I entertained when I'd hear her songs from the last decade or so. I'll probably cry now when I hear her again, not because of any fault, but because I know now how hard she was trying to live up to the standards she had previously attained and could not let go of. Thank you.

I've been paralyzed from the chest down since I was a year old, but I LOVE to sing, and I am not a bad singer even though I don't have full lung capacity. I'm lucky in that I had to teach myself to sing the way I do from childhood so it doesn't sound awful, and that I've learned to like my voice. I cannot imagine being as virtuosic as Céline Dion is, then losing what she has relied on since childhood, or having it change so much that it completely changes the way she has always sung. She's an inspiration because I know what the prognosis of SBS is, and she's still knocking it out of the park!!! Thank you for covering this. People do need to know that they can still sing after injury or disability or whatever, so thank you for pointing out how wonderful Queen Dion still is!!

You also did a great job on showing Celine’s determination and dedication to get back to what she so deeply loves to do. I think you hit the nail on the head with your oak tree analogy. I truly believe that no matter what Celine does on stage, her fans are going to continue to support her and show up. She’s very determined and strong. I think she’s going to find herself again and find another style of singing that will allow her to perform again. You have an incredibly beautiful voice. Several times, I almost cried while watching this. Celine has such a beautiful spirit. And so do you. Your kindness and compassion speak so loudly, and they're beautiful. I'm blind, so I can't watch singers perform, and I don't know the tongue placements. I hear them when you immitate what she does, but I'm not sure how it's supposed to feel when I do it. It's frustrating. I wish I had someone like you to teach me. I've always been too shy and vulnerable sharing my singing voice, but I want and need lessons, even if I never do anything professionally with it.

Just stumbled on this. I am not a singer, never really wanted to be, and now as a 78-year-old woman my dreams are on another protectory. However, I couldn't turn your lovely talking voice off or the content of your talk. It was all so interesting but for me the best most hypnotizing parts were not the singing lesson or the informative Cline D. information, although quite good. What I found so pure and honest was your interjection of life's wisdom in tiny snippets throughout the talk. For one so young your lovely innerness is surprisingly true sounding to me and real. Perhaps, as you see/hear the subtle beautiful vocal issues Celine does I picked up on your subtle beautiful life comments. They are hidden, buried, wise for one so young and simply lovely. (about the 3 time I have commented on this KZbin thing so if its gibberish sounding sorry, it was meant to be pure compliment)

But with getting older and the inevitable physical and mental scars we earn comes change... And learning to accept and embrace these isn't easy. Thanks, I have been a bass singer since I was a teenager, my voice began to crack, normally teenage years for guys but I was 8. I have been able to sing down to a g1 to a c1 since late teens. In 2014 after open heart surgery, I seemed to be loosing it all, I sounded like I had asthma and had little more than an octave in the 2s to 3s. I decided I needed to do something about it, a vocal coach and some of you guys have helped me a lot to strengthen what I had! It’s been 3 to 4 years of practice but I have stretched the upper to mid 4s and in front of my voice teacher, hit a g0, the note below the piano! By strengthening the upper, has brought back my lower! Thanks so much for what you guys do! We do listen! A Tennessee friend! ❤Low bass Kenneth ❤

Thank you so much for sharing this video. I learned so much. I love that!!! I saw Celine’s documentary and remember her saying that she didn’t want to lie. I don’t know how much time went by before I saw Fil, Wings of Pegasus, analyze Celine’s performance at the Olympics. At first I was disappointed, because she said in the documentary she didn’t want to lie and then got up in front of the world and pretended to sing. Because of watching your video, I have a deeper appreciation of why she lip sunk at the Olympics. She doesn’t want to give up the apples. And shes scared to trust the masses to love and appreciate the other beautiful colors her voice can produce. I am rooting for her!!! Also, I’m new to your channel and have subscribed to it!! I appreciate your expertise, explanations and joyful enthusiasm!!! Cheers, Annie from Arizona.

I absolutely loved this. It was recommended to me by a friend, who said it was fascinating. But it was great for me to see because I am having vocal trouble myself. (Getting better!) It also made me think of my favorite singer, Bill Medley, who had a no. 1 hit in 1965 (You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling) as one of the Righteous Brothers, and who, at 83, is still singing today. In the 1970s he list his voice completely, but he worked with his old high school choir master to get it back and learn how to take care of it. He won a Grammy in 1987 for I’ve Had The Time Of My Life. In 2020 he had throat cancer, but the surgery did not touch his vocal cords. He still performs, and I am going to see him again soon. He has a new album coming out soon, and advance word is that it’s fabulous. His voice has changed over the years, but his strong point had always been the passion and sincerity in his voice, and the way he always tells the story of the song. A song he wrote and sings now, This Will Be The Last Time (I Sing Thr Blues) will move you to tears. Bill talks about retiring now- but we’ll see! Bill Medley is a singer you should look into. He exemplifies what you are talking about in this video. I subscribed.

What I enjoyed most was how I could make others feel when I sang. I lost it. My singing ability is all but gone. Years of chemical exposure in my service to the US Army (job specific) as well as the burning of god-knows-what in Afghanistan led to permanent scarring of my vocal folds. I do get monetary compensation from the VA, but that does not make up for the daily loss I feel. I miss singing.

Lolliii! That was sensitive, joyful, funny, informative, wise and more. Thanks for all of it. Celine looks so unhappy. Even after her sensitive recording that everyone is happy with she doesn't smile. I can see the pressure on her face and the SPS (never heard it before) diagnosis seems apt. (I don't mean she HAS to smile, my dear friend was criticized for not smiling at work but she actually was suffering severe depression and found it so difficult. Also a smile is best when it's spontaneous and genuine but should never be demanded of anyone) Perhaps some of your lightness and joy will find its way to her. Delta Goodrem had cancer many years ago then a 2018 operation to remove her salivary gland resulted in her tongue becoming paralyzed. She seems to have overcome it all. (See her cover of Land Down Under) Love your work so much... and there's a bit left for you too. 💓

I dont sing, I sadly don't have musical talent, but I love watching your videos for your insight. This one though is something even more special. I'd heard Celine had some problems but didn't know what they were. You are such a beautiful, compassionate woman for making this amazing video, and I just wanted to tell you that. You are a rose growing in the wilderness. One of a kind, striking and wonderful.

Again, fantastic work Fairy Voice Mother. I think you are correct in that Celine must trust her fans, those that love her. We have always been there and will continue to be here for Celine as she evolves and moves forward. It isn't necessary to continue to hit those fabulous high notes as she has so brilliantly done in the past. Now is the time to move forward with renewed energy and perhaps in a bit of a new direction. Those people who appreciate Celine and who have loved her through the years, will still be here for her.

This was a beautiful video! Celine Dion has always been at the top of my list for female vocalists. Ever since I was young. I have yet to watch the documentary, but it's heartbreaking to see the snippets of what she goes through. I agree with you though, hopefully she'll realize she's not an apple tree, she is the oak! ♥️

What a great video! I'm enormously grateful for it being a hardcore Celine fan 🫶🙏 I just wanted to point out that none of the performances are being sung live during the Olympics. Not only this year, it's just their way to do it. She'll be back on stage and Inknow she will sing live. She might change the key, but maybe not for all the songs and even if she does she will make people cry with the emotions she gives each time she performs ❤️

F*** lol I almost made it to the end without crying. The world needs more people like you Lolli, you are true to your name of being a Fairy Voice Mother. I am not a singer, but I am a musician, and I've had to reinvent myself multiple times due to injuries, some permanent. I feel what Celine is feeling, except she is feeling pressure from an international level and a personal level. That woman can still sing and has more skills, techniques and experience than 99% of people on this planet. I hope for her that she reinvents herself, finds a place where she can be happy with her singing and tells the haters or those who expect too much from a woman suffering from a debilitating illness to just fuck right off. I'm personally not a fan of her music genre, but I can respect her as a musician, respect all the hard work she has done, all the practice she put in to perfect her craft. Letting go of that perfection when it is caused by something out of your control, is one of the hardest things to do when you are as passionate as her in music. My personal trick to get over some of my slumps is just to goof off, like, remember that music should primarily be enjoyable, fun, expressive...percussions is that for me. For that moment, let go of that metronome and just have fun, mess up, laugh. Cheers everyone~

Thanks Lolli, I pray Celine watches this and realizes she has plenty of apples, they are just different apples! Just her passion alone produces apples! She just needs to shift to produce the apples her body dictates she can produce, after all she is still Celine Dion, this fan and most fans will just shift with her! She will also generate new fans for her new style!

She needs to realise that we’re not going anywhere!

Such a beautiful video. I'm one of those people that is a fan of the drinkers and smokers but I've watched many of your videos so this popped up on my feed. I'm not a huge Celine Dion fan but I remember hearing Think Twice back in the 90s and thinking how amazing it was. In fact, I even bought the cassette single! And this was at a time when I was listening to a LOT of Metallica! I truly hope she is able to adapt and carry on. She is an exceptional talent and many, many people love her.

She has been one of my favorite artists since I first heard her in 1991. And being a hard rock heavy metal guy at heart, I knew she was going to be a massive star. I was raised on all types of music. What a beautiful angelic voice. I was given a bunch teasing about that. I pray for physical healing and hope that her mental health is intact. She has nothing to prove to us OR herself.
