I met a few people who say, "my boots are killing me." That's because they are wearing boots that are too small for them, yet pair after pair, they keep buying the same size. Brings me back to the myth floating around that one should wear boots 1 size smaller than their sneakers. You should wear boots at least the same size as your sneakers and perhaps up to 1 size larger. This does not apply to Work Boots that are intentionally made larger to accommodate thick socks. You are absolutely right in stating that boots are not forgiving. Therefore, it is better to have a slightly larger size than smaller. Feet swell through the day. They also spread width wise when standing up and walking. They contract when there is no weight on them when seated or laying down. Fit must be comfortable when standing. Buy socks of different thickness for different seasons or occasions and even for certain boots that are looser. Boots that are too tight will cause bunions to form and will cause pain when wearing them all day. People who complain about their toes cramped into a pointed toe - that should never happen as the pointed toe box is merely a fashion statement. There should be a good 1/2 to 1 inch empty space in front of the toes in a medium round toe and another 1/2 inch in a pointed or snip toe. That depends on whether you have long or short toes. Choosing a square toe is the wrong solution, though if the size is too small, the square toe is more forgiving.

I started to wear Cowboy Boots as a young child on my family's farming cattle ranch. My calf leg muscles never grew properly and I walked on my toes causing massive leg pain....but Cowboy Boots stopped that pain because their heels made my legs relaxed since I never needed to walk on my toes anymore because of the height of their heels....

I’ve been researching Cowboy Boots for months with my 50 year old spine issues and just sent back a wonderful pair of Dan Post Albuquerque that were crazy soft inside but a really high Heel, this is the MOST INFORMATIVE video I’ve seen to help me find a pair that’ll work with my Spine issues. I’ve been wearing Justin since the 80’s and had to stop. Thank you for taking the time and your help. Semper Fidelis

Your take on heels is interesting. Yourself and a lot of others say the shorter heels feel better but according to Pacific Northwest bookmakers - a western/cuban/logger heel is best for your back and knees. I tend to believe so too, as I mainly wear PNW boots these days.

They say it's because of arch support. I personally love a taller heel with more arch support but a 2-inch heel feels funny when walking sometimes

Fit is always going to be the most important of all after that I think it depends on what a person needs. I agree on heel being better for back but not for everyone.

I actually want to say for myself to the contrary of pain with higher heels. I have high arches and when I switched from sneakers or mesh tennis shoes which I would have lower back and knee pain to cowboy boots, the high cowboy or riding heels actually gave me more support and have been the most comfortable footwear I have ever put on my feet.

Good topic & yes they can as you mention about illfitting footwear. Existing lingering injuries can also be amplified wearing the various footwear, and pain can be also reduced by wearing specific footwear such as cowboy boots. 👍

Great vid Jeremiah! Due to a lack of comfort, I gave cowboy boots a lot of push back for years. This sucked cause cowboy boots fit my style and any other footwear just didn’t suit me or my lifestyle. Once I got a proper fit after years of trial and error, I’m now 100% in cowboy boots. Wearing polished boots with a suit daily and old beat up boots and jeans the rest of the time. Recently I put on my red wing iron rangers and wow my feet hurt within a few hours. Sneakers were no better. I find that with the modern boot design, the insoles they now use and a lower 1-1.5 in heel I have little to no foot pain. Most of all the heel does something, I don’t know what, but it has relieved my back pain vs a flat 0 drop shoe. I wear classic boots with leather soles. I highly recommend a Topy type of sole applied over your leather soles. They are water proof slip resistant and add structural integrity to the boot. Best of all replace the Topy sole every 12 months for way less than replacing leather. Anyway great video. Keep up the great entertainment!

Lower heels are great for that so I'm happy you're finding comfort in them! I've always been a rubber sole or leather sole kind of guy. I haven't tried sole savers yet because of that but I look forward to doing a video on them soon! Thanks for watching

Bought a pair of Tony Lama's, dark canyon caimans. They fit perfectly when I'm wearing them. No pain or discomfort, but, after a whole day of wearing them, for almost a week now my quads and hamstrings have been so tight that I can't even squat down. I've been wearing zero drop shoes for nearly ten years with no leg pain or joint problems, but apparently my body doesn't even wish to dabble in heeled cowboy boots. A shame too, those suckers were 400 dollars.

( I was a deadhead) I must say you cover the pretty boots. Some of us wear boots for a living. i wear steel toe so i don't hurt myself at work and leave them on when I get home so a horse doesn't decide to be an a**hole and crush my foot.. I would love to hear your take on the boots of the working man.

Hey Jeremiah, love your work. I had both knees operated on last year and had pain in the back of my left knee after busy days on my feet. I’ve been wearing Ariat and Tin Haul and found I didn’t have that pain. Turns out I normally hyperextend my knee but the raised heel stops me from doing that. I can walk miles in my cowboy boots!

@JERAMIAH .. can you talk about ankle pain from a new boot where it rubs on the top edge of heal fm form as it wraps around from the heal to the ankle area and so now when I walk it's catches the top of a hard edge ... What can be done to resolve this issue. ? moleskin . tape . apply a thin layer of leather over that area ? It sucks that I just spent 240.00 on a pair of well fitting boots but now am having ankle rubbing pain as it catches on the top edge of the form .

You are so right....Any kind of footwear can cause pain. It is a matter of fit and the way the boot was engineered. I have worn Nikes that were uncomfortable. A high cost boot is not necessarily more comfortable than a moderately priced boot. Again, fit is so important, as is the way the heel/sole/toe box was engineered... True, you can't go from Nikes to cowboy boots with 3" heels, without working your way up gradually, but just because the boot has a bit of a heel, does not mean it will be uncomfortable...
