Happens to me Every Gig. It Never Fails. I play for Myself and the Masses. Not for just that one person in the Room

Thanks DJ TLM! It was great to hear that other DJs have been in this EXACT situation as well. I've tried pointing out packed dance floors to detractors complaining about the music, and more than once I've heard "yeah, they have no choice but to dance." Has anyone else gotten this remark? Any DJ who has cleared a dance floor with one bad song knows the audience ALWAYS has a choice.

You can always try to reason with a person who doesn't like you or your music. It's always best to eliminate them from the equation and focus on having girls dancing.

I've learned that it helps to focus on the "mood setters" in the crowd. Pick a person or group in the crowd, and as long as they're having a good time, the rest of the crowd should follow. Also, don't let the displeased ones derail your work. For some reason they tend to be more vocal, getting up to the booth and aggressively requesting stuff or just being rude. I tend to struggle with this, as bad comments tend to put me in a weird head space, but it's all about learning how to have those slide off you and playing for the crowd that's there having a good time.

I agree with this. Especially if its a group of girls that everyone is checking out. Dont worry too much about that 1 miserable guy in the corner who hasn't moved an inch, and out of nowhere complains about 1 song.

I had this exact feeling this past Saturday. One of the staff members (Garbage Boy/Bar back) came up to me and asked "Why do I play such shitty music?" This made absolutely no sense to me because a few girls were on the floor dancing already, several different groups at the bar tapping/singing along and the night was still early before 11pm. This dude definitely had me question myself. Both myself & my fiancé knew this guy was just another asshole but it did set me off a little and really questioned my music the whole night. Turned out the whole placed loved it including guests/staff but it just goes to show that 1 persons comment can sometimes really get under your skin. I am trying to just let that go and let my vibe speak for itself, easier said then done though...

Omg yes, your last paragraph! I do a monthly event with a very diverse demographic, in both age and race/ethnicity. I try to cover everyone, but someone always complains or feels left out. It used to bother me, but for the most part the majority of people have a good time so I just let it roll off.

60/40 rule... my goal is get 60% on and off the floor .. the other 40% are posted up at the Bar or on the wall... the early dancers I never worry about... but that Katt sutubly tapping his foot at the bar ... I'm trying to coax him/her onto the floor

Agreed. You will always be someone’s hero while being the villain for someone else. Or better yet (as implied in video) you can turn from the hero to zero from the same person just because you’re not sitting in his/her pocket of music 🤦🏽‍♂️. If I wanted to please everyone all the time I would not have become a DJ...cause that ain’t happenin’

In agreement. Not everyone is going to like every single thing that you play and in many societies today, especially here in the USA, We have more and more the "entitled" people who feel that you are their personal jukebox. Sometimes to the point asking if you can play their Spotify playlists or if you can play their favorite KZbin songs. No winning in those situations. Its best to keep the majority of people happy but also understand that clubs/bars are a business. You have to flip the genres/format on occasion to get people to move between the dance floor and bar/buying bottles. It's definitely a sign of the times and something that wasn't the norm 2-3 decades ago. Keep up the good word DJ TLM. Salute from San Francisco.

I was DJing and people were dancing, they all left and I got discouraged. But one of them told me they were only leaving because they had to and it wasn’t because of me. Felt good knowing I was doing a good job

What DJ TLM saying its 100,000,000 true I am Totally with this topic cause every thing we play its not going to be some of the listeners favorite tunes trust me I been there done there when I Was in a Video Chat Room when I play few of the tunes that may not be there favorite tune but as long I keep my eyes open of the cams spots who are enjoy it then that's my main focus the most just like the dance floor in the clubs or lounge etc. Great topic keep up the work DJ CITY. P.S now as for Radio Station totally different cause u cant read the crowds from the eyes that might be the job of the program director he or she has to look at the numbers on how many people tunein to the station. So hope this makes sense if not leave a comment I will respond to that. Peace and Salute.

Hello DJ TLM ! Great content as usual! I have been following you since 2015. My question is on another topic, though loved subject of video. While mixing my set I want to know best EQ settings to keep my master, highs, mids? Also what to set Serato master at ? The levels keep going into the red even if have levels on (6) or (7).
