So glad KZbin still recommends channels like this. Very well put together video, loved the intro. And noticed the passport midi in the background. Absolute banger of a track

Dude this was such a great video! The Y series from intel was always such an oddity. slapping the Core series name onto a bunch of extremely low power dual core CPUs was certainly a move. It would be interesting to see this thing running a linux distro like Mint or MX Linux. It might just give that iGPU a bit more headroom. Keep up the videos though, you're already doing an amazing job so I'm excited to see you do even better!

OMG! Not to fanboy, but I know you!! Wow I watch your mini PC videos on my personal account all the time! This is so cool! Sorry, but yea amberlake Y was definitely one of the cpu architectures of all time. I did do a little linux testing on the device, and for the most part it works just fine. Much lower overhead, better igpu accerlation support, and faster overall operation. My biggest issue was not getting steam to even install at all on this machine under linux. My Zorin OS install probably got borked, but hey? Such is life in our niche. Thanks for the comment!

Back in 2019, I was on a bus trip across Europe and a friend of mine brought his One Mix 2. Man, what a thing that was to watch movies cramped in very limited space in those travel busses. I cant believe something as bulky as Steam Deck is now considered "poketable"... Great review!

I will say that there is something magical about using a full-fledged computer in that small of a form factor. Brings me back to the days of Playing Donkey Kong 94 on a gameboy color for the first time. However, if I'm being honest I don't think I've ever heard anyone describe the steam deck as "pocketable." "Portable?" Sure, but putting a deck in your pockets would invite some . . . interesting looks from onlookers. Thanks for watching and commenting! Appreciate the support!

Did performance improve after replacing the thermal compound?

Big no unfortunately. Temps did improve, but there's not enough headroom to make any difference. The fan was quieter on idle though.

I have a suggestion for your Audio troubles. I think it is when you move away from your mic when you are addressing the camera/audience. Maybe you should look into one of those smaller mics that clip on to your shirt or move your Mic onto an arm so it is closer when you lean a little back. I'm no expert on this topic but this is just from what I've gathered from watching other channels.

Love the intro mate! For the disassembly, you mentioned cleaning and repasting the thermal paste in the hopes to drop temps which should stop the fans ramping up. happen to know the results of that? I can see when you were palying LFD temps were around 68-70c, would be neat to see a before and after.
@SiliconFox-s8d2 ай бұрын
Excellent point. Next time I repaste something, I'll grab data for that. As for this device, temps dropped about 3c on average? I tried running LFD again just now, and for a ten minute heat soak run, it was still in the mid 60s and bumping up against 70. Though idle and low power workloads don't ramp the fans as much now, which is nice.

Dual-core macbook pro (2011) - not enough to make youtube pleasant. If you need an SSH client, you're probably fine. Acer Celeron N3350 @ 1.1Ghz - quite unpleasant too, though better with a wired mouse than trackpad.

Netbooks are still quite popular in some niches in my country, these come equipped with either Intel Atoms (single core, dual threads) or Core 2 Duos (dual core, single threads) so I occasionally flip those for a quick (but narrow) profit; Tiny10 (a barebones version of Windows 10) works decently on such machines (provided you max the ram, install an SSD, and optimize windows), so Dual Core CPUs are still quite usable
@SiliconFox-s8d2 ай бұрын
Very interesting! I've heard about some of those de-bloated windows isos, but I've been nervous to try them on anything. Seems like a huge security risk. I may have to reevaluate this machine with one of those windows isos, maybe a comparison against linux? Thanks for the input!
@guaiqueritech2 ай бұрын
@@SiliconFox-s8d I’ve used Tiny10 for over a year on the low-end laptops I flip; no complaints since. The first time I sold one I had tested the OS for over a month before committing to posting that laptop, so as to make sure I did not sell a botchy device. Disclaimer: I have only tested it in low-end computers, since their target audience will only use them for the most basic uses (office productivity, light browsing and media consumption); I have not tested it for harder to run programs, as these usually require computers that already have the specs to run full windows.

Hi, I think that instructions and hardware acceleration matter more than how many cores. For example if I took a Core 2 Quad it would likely be as fast or faster in basic raw work BUT it would be missing critical hardware acceleration and just KZbin alone would bring the system to its knees unless it had a GPU installed that was less than 10 years old. Once you force the CPU to do work that is normally handled by hardware acceleration it’s game over! A Core 2 Quad can not play h.265 without using the processor cores themselves. Meanwhile even though it doesn’t have h.264 hardware acceleration it is fast enough to do it on the cores. H.265 not so much.

I still use 2 ASUS / LG EeePC Netbooks. Still great for my purposes. I'm looking to replace them, but getting a small Netbook like one with ethernet is difficult or extremely expensive..
@SiliconFox-s8d2 ай бұрын
The Asus EeePC was another one I was curious about. The design is still appealing to this day! Also good luck finding a more modern netbook with ethernet. I would imagine that at that size, it's not really a requirement for many people. I'm guessing you're not one for the dongle life eh?

If there's anything worse than loosing some ports (as long as there's enough capable USB-C ports) it's manufacturers soldering storage. And it's not even that fast. WD makes a 2230 NVMe drive that easily beats Apples current soldered SSD's. But really 2230 should be prohibited as well. Way too often you see loads of space that could easily have been utilized for either 2280 size and/or a second SSD. As for ram... Perhaps soldered is faster. As long as it's not priced at an outraging premium compared to separate ram modules - which unfortunately is often is the case (Apple and Microsoft).
