Into Europe: The European Union and ESA are leading Europe’s efforts in Space. Europe has a state-of-the-art space industry and projects in Galileo and Copernicus, monitoring the Earth and providing a geolocation service. Yet due to the lack of a state subsidize through government contracts, the industry lacks large players and is falling behind. Can Europe step up to the task and compete in the increasingly competitive and militarized space?

WOW Real success from an organisation within Europe and funded mainly from EU countries without being under the control of the European Commission. Europe had the chance to invest in "Skylon" which would have been the envy of the world just like the Anglo French "Concorde". Yes, state investment is needed but too much creates complacency which can't be sustained in fast moving market. Another great topic from "inter Europe" insightful and well balanced reporting. The is becoming one of my "go to" channels on you tube for interesting commentary.

Thanks for the reminder for "Skylon" and SABRE. According to wicki "For the first couple of decades the work was privately funded, with public funding beginning in 2009 through a European Space Agency (ESA) contract. The UK government pledged £60 million to the project on 16 July 2013 to allow a prototype of the SABRE engine to be built; contracts for this funding were signed in 2015." A combi, ramjet / rocket motor has a wider range of applications. I'm really enjoying the Into Europe channel too.

No need to get ESA mixed with EU. ESA has invested in Reaction Engines and Skylon, all the way back to 2009, and they are still doing it today. Skylon, if executed successfully, will be a major technological leap in propulsion technology. However, that will take time and money.

ESA's headquarters are located in Paris. Most ESA space missions are controlled at ESOC in Darmstadt, but not all. The Columbus module of the ISS is controlled in from a DLR (German aerospace agency) building in Oberpfaffenhofen. The price of a rocket doesn't mean much when not divided by payload to LEO say.

A little math later the Falcon 9 comes in with 11273$/kg max 5500kg, Ariane 5 16513$/kg Max 10900kg and Ariane 62 15400$/kg max 5000kg or 64 10957$/kg max 11500kg.

@@bekr3473 Yes, the comparison here does work pretty well, since all three rockets operate in roughly the same weight class anyway. However, unlike the Falcons the Arianes are optimized for GTO instead of LEO. That means that Ariane 6 actually should be able to compete with Falcon Heavy when it comes to any launch beyond LEO, which is exactly what it is designed to do.

Comparison of Falcon 9 and Ariane 5 price is just stupid, considering Falcon 9 price is given for 5.5t to GTO, while Ariane 5 ECA takes 11t, so... twice the payload! Can you spot the issue? Twice the payload, twice the price....

It's good that ESA is *not* an agency of the EU. And it's better if it stays this way. It shows Europe can also advance without the EU patronage in every single field and it allows for example brains and money from «outside» of the EU for example Switzerland being quite active, paying quite a lot «per capita», and being an historic member.

The problem with the ESA is that it's a big entity who "wants to" foster smaller private companies but wants to make sure they never get big enough to eat their lunch. Meanwhile, in the US, NASA and the military are feeding their private sectors whole-heartedly and SpaceX having such huge ambitions and actually pulling it off has attracted wide public acclaim unlike ESA launches which happen in South America, the European public doesn't get a chance at all to actually see the fruits of their labor so for 10% more efficiency, they sacrifice 100% of visibility and for some people, if you're not showing your work, you may as well not be doing anything at all. Chances are SpaceX is about to get Starship flying (successfully) before Arianespace even launches a single test flight. ArianeSpace is now also YEARS behind on Ariane6 and they say they won't have a reusable rocket until after Ariane6 retires which is over a decade after it goes into use. By then, SpaceX could be on its 5th generation Starship and flying hundreds of Starship missions to the Moon and Mars. The ESA had a chance to be much closer rivals had they took SpaceX seriously and began reusable rocket development back in 2014 but this is what happens when you have a bunch of old bureaucrats in suits who are too afraid of change.

A bonus fact: Czechoslovakia (Now split into Czechia and Slovakia) was the third country to have a man in the space after the USSR and USA. His name was Vladimir Renek and his rocket launched from the USSR as a part of an Soviet aligned country program called Interkosmos, his rocket launched on March 2nd in the year 1978 together with a soviet captain Alexej Gubarev. ESA also claims that he is the first European cosmonaut. He even was in the European parlament with one of the diplomatic sides. (It's little bit shamefull, but it was actually the KSČM, the remnant party of KSČS, which led the country when it was under communism. He was at least "nestraník" = not a member in the party)

About the SpaceX thing, ESA has many good emgeers, they would probably build a better starship with ESA's help. Elon gains efficiency and ESA gains experience from SpaceX

Exploration is noble, fascinating and sexy for the general public, but it's the Earth-monitoring projects that provide real utility to the public. French Guyana is not a colony, it is an integral part of France, that is located next to the equator (which allows to increase payload) and on the west coast of South America (which is on the right side to send rockets from, since due to the earth's rotation, the rockets fly away from the mainland). You don't want to send off rocket near dense population centers, so Kourou is the perfect place to send them, since any accident would fall in the ocean.

millions of euro from the government to help them innovate? I presume this money will go directly into the garbage heap. Even highly innovative government funded projects like the internet or GPS weren't just 'here's a ton of money, go innovate', they were specific attempts to solve specific problems. It would be more useful if the EU countries removed restrictions from their own economies and reduced barriers between doing business across the EU. Government spending on R&D is good but won't bring the sea-change the EU needs. For that we need less incompetent, less nationalist leaders and policies.

People may dislike the EU, but as a whole, it has immensely benefitted European citizens, since its inception. People alive now don’t understand how conflict ridden Europe was in the very recent past. Now it seems insane to think of two European countries going to war. As for ESA - let the other countries get the bragging rights for the major projects like Mars and/or moon habitation, while ESA develops projects to benefit the European population, like an independent GPS system, Earth surveillance, climate programs and engineering and technology research.

But that said, creating an international space mining corporation, whose surplus funds could be diverted to the United Nations for instance (a neutral third-party). Would be a good start for space mining. It would have great economic benefits from pooling our resources, it would accelerate human technological development, and it would avoid space mining starting off as a conflict.

I have conflicting issues with all space agencies. I don't like the nationalist pride of the USA, however I desire much more about the focus of human exploration in space. There shouldn't be any sort of space race, especially when there are militaristic motives of dominance in the background, because it's purely primative and disappointing. I won't even consider humanity spacefaring until there's a worldwide collaboration. The cosmos has easily proven to us that the environment is extremely dangerous, thus I think nature is testing our ability to all work together. I think human space exploration should be innovative since it does bring motivation to the next generation, it brings a poetic connection between us and the universe, and the technology invented for these missions spill right back to economic stimulation. I think your video is very informative and I'm thankful the algorithm brought me to you and reading the comments, and I think because of this information, I'm deciding to not pursue a career in ESA (it wasn't my primary goal, but it was something to consider). I'm not even a European citizen, so my voice doesn't even reflect the overall European standpoint.

The space race should be fought by private companies that are worried more about profit than national pride instead of governmental agencies that strongly push for a monopoly in space for their respective countries. A space race can kick start a chain reaction of more and more investors, leading to a market increase and more exploration.
