Poverty rates have fallen faster in the past 30 years than at any other time on record. The UN wants extreme poverty to disappear by 2030. We assess the data to see if this is achievable.

It is estimated that somebody escapes extreme poverty every 1.2 seconds. According to the World Bank, anyone on less than $1.90 per day is living in extreme poverty unable to afford basic food, clothing, healthcare and shelter.
Absolute poverty rates have fallen faster in the past 30 years than in any other time on record. This is a remarkable achievement but the task of taking people put of the worst poverty remains a huge challenge. The impressive fall is the result of changes in just two countries, China and India.
In the 1980s the majority of people in both of these countries were living in extreme poverty. But now the share of the poorest has fallen to 21% in India, and less than 2% in China.
Increased productivity in farms and a mass migration from poor rural areas to the booming cities enabled many Chinese and Indian people to better their lives. Asia is moving into a new phase but can other parts of the world copy their model of moving people to factory jobs in cities?
Today, more than half the world's poorest people live in sub-Saharan Africa. The percentage of the African population living in extreme poverty fell from 54% in 1990, to 41% in 2013. But in that same time period, the population of sub-Saharan Africa boomed meaning the total number of poor people rose from 276m to almost 400m.
The population of sub-Saharan Africa is predicted to reach 2bn by 2050 and a large percentage of those people are likely to be extremely poor. And unlike Asia, a transformation of this region is unlikely to happen soon. Sub-Saharan Africa is urbanising faster than any other place on earth.
But moving into the cities is not providing the same ladder out of poverty as it did in Asia. A lack of infrastructure, public transport, and essential services in many African cities prevents poor people from finding jobs and getting an education.
The rapidly growing population only makes mater worse by putting further strain on resources. Millions of poor people in sub-Saharan Africa live far below the World Bank's threshold of $1.90 per day. That means it will be harder to pull them out of extreme poverty.

Poverty is a tragedy. But if you look at the figures now is the best time to live so far in human history. The key to solving extreme poverty is economic growth. If the population of Africa become wealthier, they will have less children. Look at the demographic transition model for this. Most African countries are in stage 2-3 of the model meaning they are currently undergoing a population explosion. If they become wealthier they will move in to stage 4-5 of the model where the population will level out.

Economic growth without growth in corruption...if the economy grows but corrupt politicians and businessmen retain all of the wealth that has been created, and spend that wealth overseas, then none of the average people will be better off (it won't even trickle down). Hopefully corruption is increasingly exposed as communication technology becomes cheaper and more transparent.

MDR Hogan: Being wealthy doesn't mean lower birthrate. Many countries in Africa are deeply religious, whether they are Christians or Muslims. Look at Saudi Arabia and other rich countries in the Mid East, look at how many kids they have. Look at how many kids the average woman has there! Look at the devoted Christians, Catholics and Jews in the USA, how many kids these folks have? Being richer doesn't always result in fewer babies. China has fewer kids because of one-child policy, and the overall atheist culture there. Good luck trying to convince the religious folks to have fewer kids...Japan has fewer kids also because people in Japan aren't as religious. No education or economic development can help reduce the number of kids per family if religion that advocates reproduction dominates the culture of the society. As long population outgrows the economy, there is always poverty, and inequality.

It is a challange Europe has to accept. Italy first. If European countries want to solve the illegal immigration flow of poor people from sub-sahara they cannot patrol their boarders anymore. Nor they can pay countries such as Lybia to stop on their soil that flow. There are cases of detentions turned into human trafficking and slavery. They have to go where the flow begins and turn the economy for the better.

You open new market to sell products and services, starting with renewable technologies such as pv panels and concentrated solar and alike. They've planty of sun, we have the technology. We do share some interest. It's not giving and not receiving. Plus there are some projects in Africa that can help fighting extreme poverty. The Great Green Wall is one of them. Europe was helped by USA after the Second World War. Italy received help with the Marshall plan and it boomed its ecomony. People here started getting wealthier and emigration abroad plummered. Stabilizing Africa can even prevent terrorism to spread in other countries fuelled by resentments against western countries. I love these sorts of videos. It's a useful reminder that despite all the challenges we face as a species the world IS getting better. But what we need to be doing is moving towards a completely carbon free future with all our energy needs extracted solely from renewables and nuclear. Continuing to utilise fossil fuels is not only disastrous for the world climate it also fuels corruption and wars in many parts of the world, especially the chaotic Middle East. By denying revenue to the very worst and violent regimes of Russia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar and Venezuela these countries could not continue funding wars and destabilising the wider region with their insane agendas.

The reason we have poverty today is very simple. It’s because of capitalism. Any free market laissez-faire economy will have a lot of poverty. The only difference between poverty in the first/second world and the third world is that the government builds plenty of infrastructure and there is social welfare and unemployment insurance. The governments of the third world don’t have the tax revenue to build such infrastructure and give handouts to those living in destitution.

You've got to stop listening to woke dimwits. Capitalism doesn't cause poverty - it helps reduce it. Where do you think the infrastructure to build wealthy economies comes from? It comes from capitalists. Capitalists create companies that provide jobs to people. If people have jobs, they will make money to help bring them out of poverty. You probably desire an egalitarian world where every person has the same amount of money. If you could snap your fingers and make this a possibility, what do you think would happen? People who desire a better life will work harder to achieve it. Others will squander their money on short-term pleasures and find themselves with nothing. Driven, intelligent, able, and talented people will become richer. Lazy, dumb, disabled, and untalented people will become poorer. The world will return to its present state, with extreme poverty and wealth. There is nothing you can do to prevent a wealth disparity. It has existed for as long as there have been people, and it will continue until the end of our existence on this planet.

Sooner or later this problem will become a World Problem too. Just look around to see the number of children that is pushed around in an average stroller of an Arab Woman in a Western Mall. An average African Woman to the contrary is living in abject poverty and can be uplifted from that misery with the right help.

This is false, It was the same where I'm from back in the 50s, and we are catholic... The Muslim countries are going through their phase of demographic transitions, like all other countries have, and many of them have similar birth rates to Europe, or have sharply declining birthrates. Technically, it is illegal for Catholics to use birth control too, Latin-America has now mostly completed its demographic transition, and apart of Afghanistan and few exceptions, most Muslim countries are closing in too. Yes, and google the average family size in Latin America in 1980s. Africa's population pyramid today is proportionally the same as South-America back in 1980. Today, birth rates in South-America is less than 2 child per women, down from 4.21 in 1980. This is a well documented phenomenon known as population transition. France began its transition in the 1800s, and today Muslim countries are achieving theirs. Back in 1980, Turkey also had 4,36 children per women, in 2017: less than 2. Iran: 1980 - 6.48, 2017 - 1.63. Believe me, its a scientific and well documented phenomenon.

Why are we surprised today such totally biased and imbalanced effort hasn't helped Africa's poverty problem, but created massive population explosion into extreme poverty? The lure of evil is compelling, and, yes, it has gone on since the beginning, but that does not mean it is intrinsic in us.

In China about 400 million people live in the urban cities, living a comfortable middle class life. While 1 billion still live in poverty, maybe not extreme poverty, but compared to the nurtured urban areas its a horrible quality of life.

For countries like African and afghanistan iraq etc, I have always wondered the best way to make them constitutional and workable is the british way When british came to india, the rulers were the great warriors Marathas, although they were great conquerors, concepts of democracy and human rights and a formal present day parliamentary democracy were alien concepts British did commit massive human rights violation, exploited resources, introduced a flower system which is riddled with loopholes, but the way they gave india it's present day structure is something the world needs to look at, That's the only way these countries can be made workable, Iam not saying that the world should colonise them or exploit them or their resources, no , absolutely no But the formal system needs to be introduced now

amit krishnani Marathas Rajputs sikhs etc are warrior classes yes but what about others? Indians were always peaceful and accepted humanity, look at us South Indians. Are you out of your mind? The british didn’t teach us the concept of democracy and humanity, but I accept you are partially true, they gave us a good form of democracy the parliamentary one.

Aditya Namburi I never said they taught us humanity, I meant brother they gave us democracy, Our transition from colony to a democracy was relatively peaceful other than partition I'm other countries like france and usa or canada etc it was very violent, And south indians are also great warriors, chola chalukyas rashtrakutas, bahamani etc were great warriors Its nit about race, in any society with no ruler, some people with resources organise themselves inti some form of army and start gathering resources and become kings This is whats happening in afghanistan iraq syria etc, its power struggle

Utter nonsense. All the British did was give us a common enemy and 200 years of pain. Everything else, we gave to ourselves. The concept of social justice could have flowed in without British conquest. And the social justice and rights that we did get was due to leaders like Raja Ram Mohan Roy. These were Indian leaders, not British. Look at Pakistan. Did they achieve what we did? No!! So the difference was not made by the British. The difference was made by THE PEOPLE OF INDIA. Get it?

No it cannot. Some people are either too stupid, too lazy, or just unwilling to work, and I personally don't support the idea of subsidizing the lives of the healthy who choose not to work. I also don't support the concept of paying to fix the poor life choices of others. Perhaps don't have that child you cannot afford, perhaps you should pick up a book and better your education.
@austinedeclan10

James Russell I am from Kenya which is in sub Saharan Africa. We are not too stupid or too lazy to get ourselves out of poverty. We just have greedy politicians, foreign countries with selfish interest and deep seated ethnocentrism blocking our path. Africans being lazy idoits who don't work is a misconception. Our best and brightest are working in western countries and only a tiny fraction of what they earn comes back to the country that invested in their education. Given the same opportunities you had many African children would match the IQ scores of their western counterparts while those living on less than a $ a day work the hardest back breaking jobs.
@108nighthawk
@108nighthawk 6 жыл бұрын
Austine Declan No excuse. Have corrupt politicians? Overthrow them. But too bad a revolution would require coordination and, how should I put this, a certain level of inbred cultural gusto that Africa seems to lack. The result of laziness. And guess what, every nation is self interested. That is how it works. And I have no doubt that the average African would thrive if they adopted Western, Anglo-American culture, that is because the Anglo-American/European culture is superior to that of Sub-Saharan Africa.
@austinedeclan10
@austinedeclan10 6 жыл бұрын
James Russell You are not an African so you do not see the nuances of the unique position we find ourselves in. Our politicians have armies which the keep bankrolled by the loot they got from government coffers. It is really easy to offer solutions from a point of not seeing the full picture. It is also easy to give a one word answer to a very complex problem such as laziness or stupidity or excuses. I do agree with you in the sense that no one should subsidise another's poor choices. That being said if your western countries stop medling in our political issues and funding and supporting dictators we will sort ourselves out eventually because we're neither stupid nor lazy.

Yes. In Islam every person is required annually to give 2% of their wealth to the poor and needy in your community. No taxes, no trusting greedy government hack jobs with distributing wealth. By yourself give 2% of your wealth to the poor and needy in your community and poverty will be eradicated within a year.
@id1666

That's not enough. In Nordic countries about 10% of income is directly directed to those in need of money. Also everyone gets free education, healthcare and medication. So Islam seems very greedy and selfish compared to that.

+Qasim Good for you to be in the top minority of muslims. Fact is, most muslims can't afford an education or healthcare. Even most the Syrians are too uneducated to have a job, even an entry-level one, in Europe. All the adults tend to lack 3-9 years of education and pretty much all of the previous education is subpar and the underaged ones have to start studying at a level of kids couple of years younger than themselves. Do you also get $1500/month for studying plus discounts on housing, traveling etc.?
