This happened to me 5 years ago. I had a friend who just got out of a bad relationship, but I also had a crush on her. Because I didn't think it was a good idea to ask her out immediately, I waited for about 6 months and we actually became really close during that time. Before I had a chance to make my move, someone else did. Before she went on a first date with him, she actually wanted to talk about something. She questioned if I had any feelings for her. I told her I did. Surprisingly, she also said she had feelings for me. During the 6 month wait, she was actually wondering if I was ever going to ask her out and if it was a good idea to get in a relationship with me. Ultimately, we didn't get to be in a relationship (which did sting for a bit) but we both didn't want to end the friendship just because we know so much about each other and really cared for each other. Today, we are still good friends. She's in a relationship with a new guy now while I'm still single. But you know what? I'm doing alright. I know not every relationship/friendship will work out like this, but I just wanted to share my story. I think everyone should just be honest with how they feel.

I feel like not having guy friends in elementary school was super detrimental to me personally because then when I got to middle school (and high school...and college 😅) it was really hard for me to just be friends with guys. I always felt like I had to have a crush on them, or rather, I was really picky with my guy friends so of course the ones I chose wound up being guys I was attracted to, etc. So I struggle a lot with this subject because on the one hand, i really want close guy friends. But on the other, I know that I personally can’t have that because I always fall for them. And they never like me back. So slowly our friendship fades and I get really sad. Right now I’m friends with a guy, we’ve known each other for nearly 3 years. I told him I liked him in September and wasn’t met with mutual feelings but we’ve maintained the exact same friendship since. I'm at that weird position where I always feel like I would never date someone I wasn't friends with first (because what are you going to build the relationship up from?), but also like not being able to decide/getting scared that dating a friend would ruin what you already have with each other. Thankfully when I made it clear to a friend that I didn't want to date them, we're still really good friends now, but I'm still kind of wondering if that decision was to protect myself or protect the friendship and I don't know which is worse.

I disagree with Phil that you can't have a friendship if you're attracted to them! Maybe I'm biased cause this happened to me with my long time friend since grade school. He's an attractive guy so I remember having a crush on him in grade school but we were always just friends. I got over it cause it's grade school, not that serious. I never told him about it and we remained friends. Then fast forward to like sophomore year of highschool I actually started to like him and I liked him for a couple years, he never knew, but we were still really close friends and we're close friends to this day. I think the difference is whether you care about them enough to just wish for their happiness and nothing more. Once you start trying to get something out of them then it's not longer a healthy friendship. Whether it's romantic, or material or emotional. If I started to only view our relationship as I like him so I want to date him and get him to date me then I would be using our friendship for my own gain, which is toxic. But I never viewed it that way...I liked him but I cared about our friendship so much I set aside how I felt and waited for him to give me signs or tell me if it was mutual. It never was so I just backed off and he got into a happy relationship. I eventually grew out of those feelings and we're still really good friends and I no longer view him in that way when I liked him in high school.

I think the thing about best friends with the opposite gender is that there are so many things that overlap with a normal healthy relationship and usually one or both of the parties will start to wonder, why am I searching for more when I already have what I want in a relationship. But the problem is, the feelings might be lacking or unreciprocated, yet in moments of doubt, this may be overlooked and at the end of the day could jeopardise the friendship.

As a healthy straight male, here’s what I think/feel: I do find girls attractive and wonder how it would be to go out with them, especially because I’ve been single for a while, but that’s because I’ve been single. If I had a gf I would still find them attractive but would have no problems being friends, unless the girl isn’t my type but we have things in common I’ll have no problem liking her as a friend only. At the moment there is this one girl interested (she made it way too obvious) but she’s not my type so I’m trying to have a talk with her but we’re always busy... and I don’t want to start a relationship and later break up because it didn’t work, I don’t want to change the friendship especially because she’s like “one of the bros”. I also feel that I can be friends with my guy friends’ gfs because I know there’s a line we’ll never cross. Tl;dr if they’re not your type, you can be friends no problem, if they have bfs and /or you have a gf already, also no problem

Outside of maybe fandoms/fans for friendly joking purposes. I think shipping people you know in real life is just manipulative because people get so blinded by what they think is the perfect couple they just turn things awkward or pressure people in to siuations where they feel like they can't leave. I have three cases I have seen. 1. The relationship between two of my friends was going so well and they were happy growing at their own pace. However their aquaintences kept trying to meddle or hear about the details of their relationship. They tried to"help" by giving suggestions on how they would do things. ( Their friends were really just trying to live through them.) 2. A girl I knew got stuck into an emotionally abusive relationship for two years because her friends insisted he was perfect or said that she was the problem not him. 3. People shipped them together but they both were just really unhappy. Turns out the person who shipped them was just looking for a reason to interact with the boyfriend's friends and was willing to throw her friend under the bus just to do it.

im currently in college and two of my best friends are girls. I developed small feelings for one, and I kind of told her at one point, she didn't reciprocate, which was totally fine. But after I got my closure I was able to go back to the way things normally were between us. To answer this though, what's the difference between platonic and romantic? Why should platonic not become romantic? Trust and care exist in both types of relationship. Seems like the only difference is the intimacy and especially the exclusivity, the latter enhancing the ship intensity. So if you trust yourself to be a good man and you really want the best for her (and especially if you find her attractive) naturally you can catch feelings. Who doesn't want their other half to be a best friend? So I feel like that's the difference. If the other person checks all the boxes on your dating preferences, watch out, though it's not a bad thing.

Further thought: this might need to be a one to one situation though. If either party has multiple best friends of the opposite sex, my guess is that only the default person has a chance. Default as in he/she is the first person to come to mind.

You would think it'd be a natural transition from a platonic relationship to a romantic relationship, since at face value, the only difference is sexual intimacy. The main hurdles, especially if you are inexperienced in relationships, is that expectations and dynamics change once you are in a romantic relationship. The expectations and ideals you have for a friend are different, and maybe even more lofty for someone you are dating. They become even more pronounced once you start living together. Also, being a good friend and becoming a romantic partner are 2 different things, 2 different skill sets attributes. The qualities that made you a good friend doesn't necessarily translate into attraction. Attraction is mostly instinctual, gut feeling, subconscious; usually not logical. You notice in this talk that most of the focus is on whether to let their friend/crush know that they want to escalate the relationship to something romantic, and taking a blind shot in the dark; because there's a naive assumption that just because you are close as friends, it would automatically translate to a successful relationship. There is little talk in the sense of bettering oneself, making oneself a more attractive and understanding life-partner prospect, to increase the odds of success.

I dont normally comment on videos but I actually just recently went through this. Been good friends with this girl for 5 years and eventually I caught feelings and eventually told her. Unforutnately, she didn't feel the same way. She was super cool about it and we are still best friends today and still hangout weekly. It's different for all guys but for me, I am still good with being best friends with her and I have moved on from seeing her as both my best friend and more than a friend to just seeing her as a best friend now. I personally think that it is still possible to be best friends even when you have been rejected. It all just depends on whether that person can move on and continue being best friends or not and also not making things awkward. I don't regret telling her how I feel because at least now I know. It's way better than going through day to day thinking about how she feels about me.

Getting more matured I really stopped believing in a really CLOSE friendship between male and female. First of all, I started dating my first boyfriend when we got so close so we had to admit it's now just friendship because friends can't be so weirdly close. So, speaking of a guy and a girl who are BEST friends its really hard to draw the line between the attraction and friendship. Secondly, before meeting my boyfriend (fiancee) who I'm happily together with right now, I had a relatively close guy friend and we shared so much interests together and I'd like to be friends with him forever, but he just stopped contacting me after I got in relationship because he secretly liked me all the way through --- I knew it tbh but just treated him as a friend and thought he could compromise but he couldn't and just disappeared from my life. In my personal view, between guy & girl, 'Good friends' and 'Best friends' are not the same kind of relationship and it's composed with different ingredients. When guy and girl are friends, they forget the gender, but that hardly makes 'Best friend'. [One side crush doesn't count in this] Good friends, Best friends(buddies) and Lovers are different kinds of 'Love'. Best friends need more Love , Chemistry and Attractive (Physically & Mentally) ... or you can say that Best friends between guy & girl are more than just friends. They are attracted to each other but with the realization that 'It won't be enough' or 'It won't work' as lovers. So each of them kinda draws the line for himself/herself and keeps it. However, "He/she is kind of my sub-type" so I enjoy hanging out with him/her. [they can even feel mild degree of chicky or jealous sometimes especially when 3rd person involved] And because of that, in critical moment or situation, many best friends accidentally unintentionally cross the line and screw up the relationship. Moreover, because "He/she is kind of my sub-type", if you put them into the situation that they don't think they can pursue their 'my type' anymore , like 'cast away' ... the balance of dynamic between this 'Best friends' will possibly shift to Lovers [easier than in the Good friends case]. In fact, we all know that Best friends is the closest thing to Lovers. It's also the most emotional involved relationship next to Lovers. So..... can guy & girl be friends ??? .... It depends on which part of the spectrum of 'friends' you are talking about.

From my perspective, YES, it is possible to only be friends, BUT it takes both sides to be very mature about everything. Based on experience, though, NO, it's not possible. When I was in high school, every guy friend I had asked me out, and when I had declined the offer to be their girlfriend, we were no longer friends. AT ALL. Suffice to say, I was pretty lonely before graduating.

I think friends can be friends even when there's a crush. I have a guy friend who I say was my friend before we were born, because our moms are/were best friends while they were pregnant with us. And I had a dumb little crush on him as a teenager. But that was a passing thing, I just wondered if what I have with him would translate into a good relationship. Growing up with older brothers, I form better friendships with other males and we are totally cool with it being platonic. They only fall apart once they get into relationships because their significant other is "scared i'll steal them away" and eventually my male friends stop talking to me altogether. It gets real annoying.

Thank you for doing an episode like this. I just went through something EXACTLY like this. I caught the feels and made the confession, now we're in an extremely awkward area where its hard talk to the other. A lot has happened since and we were able to talk somewhat normally again, but it was just not possible to go back to the way it was. Now we're having trouble again. I respect her feelings and understand where she's coming from. I don't know how it'll turn out in the future but I hope that we can talk normally would each other again. While I am at it, is there anywhere I can submit idea requests?
