Here's challenge for you: Can you beat Pokemon game using only 1 move per Pokemon? Rules are: 1. When you get pokemon, you need look that Pokemon current moves it knows at that moment and pick one that it can use only for now on (Unless you have at that time TM/HM that you wish to use for it). - Example 1: Your starter Pokemon is Mudkip. It only knows 2 moves when you get it so you pick one move and for now on, it can use that move for now on. Even if you evolve it, it can only use that move. (Imagine having lvl 100 Swampert that only knows Tackle) - Example 2: You capture lvl 20 Pidgey and it knows 4 moves, but you have TM/HM you wish to use, so you teach that move right away to your Pidgey instead picking one of 4 current moves it already knows. For now on Pidgey can use that TM/HM move only. 2. When you get chance, go to Move Deleter and remove other moves that pokemon knows expect one that your pokemon is allowed to use. 3. You can't have HM slave pokemon that knows 4 HM moves, you need have 4 pokemons, each knowing one of HM moves. - Example: Pidgey knows Fly, Bellsprout knows Cut, Machop knows Strength and Tentacool knows Surf

I may have something that's even worse. I'm trying this challenge in platinum and I hacked in leftovers at the start to speed it up because you can't normally get them until after the elite 4 and I don't want to be spending forever doing it. I'm also using a few other cheats to speed it up too. I got my first badge at level 22 and when you've gone through the ragged path, there's Aroma Lady Taylor and her lv 9 budew and lv 11 cherubi. I bet the budew fairly easily but I tried the cherubi 3 times and failing because of leech seed, which healed more than I could hurt it and dealt more damage than leftovers could heal me. I had to level up to 27 where the shuckle learnt rest before I could beat it, and even then I had to wait until the cherubi used all of it's power points and started to use struggle. I had to use 8 rests. And I had leftovers.

There are 6 stats in Pokémon: Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, HP, and Speed. You conveniently have 6 slots in a party. You should try a run where you use the Pokémon with the highest base stat of each particular stat, and another with the lowest. If one Pokémon has the lowest/highest in multiple stats, it’s up to your discretion to choose the next best to fill one of the overlapped stats to make things interesting. You could repeat this in multiple generations if the team would change.

If you're curious, the reason the Onix didn't use Rock Tomb is because of a quirk of the AI for gym leaders in this gen: They often won't use their most powerful move on your pokemon until they think you're in KO range with it, so it will be a surprise for you when they deal more damage than you expect. This works pretty well when you're using a normal pokemon, you might take 30% from tackle, then another 30%, then 50% from Rock Tomb and faint, but for Shuckle were the battle is so long, the AI kind of backfires.

The fact that rock tomb lowers speed is also relevant- onix is faster, and thus will be disincentivized to use “speed control” moves unless it sees a kill.

It will act as it always has, slowly draining the afflicted pokemon's HP based on the steps your player character takes - however once it brings the afflicted pokemon down to 1HP, the poison condition will disappear from the pokemon. In battle though, it will still knock your pokemon out.

This brings me BACK. I did this as a kid... sort of. Not a full run, but I was obsessed w/ the in-game trade Shuckle in gold, and I decided to beat the Elite Four with JUST shuckle. o_O I mean, it was more an exercise in patience than anything else. He's such a TANK, and it never occurred to me not to use items, so I never died- but chipping away at damage and losing PP was the worst risk for failure. Eventually figured it out, though, and the end Hall of Fame with one little buggie rock tank was SO worth it.

Flamebuster32 when you have less than four moves, you learn attacks automatically. So you starter Pokémon, for example, will only have whatever it’s first four level up moves were.

Perhaps it's not so odd considering the fact that quite a few battles took multiple play-throughs, increasing the chance of the A.I. not using the right move. What's really odd is why the game makers allowed the A.I. to use moves other than the right one. Could that have been to make the game less predictable and more interesting?

@@borgoat1220 Another way to look at it they could be using dynamic difficulty adjustment with randomizer. Each time you battle a trainer, a lottery is held in game to decide what kind of AI you will be facing. The more you lose, the more likely it is that your opponent will get a bad AI for the fight. A lot of games implement dynamic difficulty adjustment to make games more fun and I think this is how game freak implemented this feature by having a lottery for AI.

I'm using it in Randomized Silver. Taught her Metronome. And yes, in the randomizer upon delivering the mail to that fat dude on the route before Violet City, you get Metronome from him and yeah, Dunsparce isn't too bad. Its stats are still better than Delibird's, right?
