I expect the early game to be rough, the middle game to be easy and the elite four to be harder because of Growlithe having a shallow movepool.

I have done the run recently and there is actually a way to make the Elite 4 trivial. TM31, Mimic. You can copy Amnesia from Slowbro. You don't really need to but you can copy Submission and Hypnosis from Machamp and Gengar. You can (and should) copy Hydro Pump, at least to go through Aerodactyl. And you can copy Hypnosis from Exeggutor. This allowed me to finish the run at level 73.

9:45 - Yeah, for the most part, if it's a unique move interaction that's not a glitch, it was either added in Gen 2 or _inspired_ by Gen 2. It's easier to remember for those who played Pokemon Stadium 2 because that game had a bunch of different battles that showcased unique mechanics like Twister being able to hit Pokemon that had used Fly and the like.

Gust also works like that, it's just no one knows cause basically no AI uses Fly, and most AI don't use Gust by the time you can get Fly, and neither are competitively viable.

Possible next run idea: as a tribute to your playthrough of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, maybe do a gen 3 run using only a meowth and bulbasaur? No evolving to keep them faithful to the PMD games.

I'm cool with the exception to the rule for Steel types, it makes sense. Though if you really wanted to do it that way, it might work in a Gen with Corrosion. It wouldn't be easy, but it's a possibility. But feel free to do it your way.

The issue is Corrosion hasn't bern a thing since Gen 7 and he doesn't tend to do newer games. The only exception was BDSP but that was a remake of Gen 4.

Corrosion actually only allows the user to poison (the status) steel types, they're still immune to poison type damage moves

Don't know if anyone else has said this, but the fact that you had to pump Growlithe up to level 80 just to have a chance at beating Lance was a pretty good demonstration of why dragon types were nerfed/given counters after Gen 1.

I think the reason why the poke-tower rival battle is so easy is because team and level wise it's barely an upgrade from the SS Anne fight. If you manage to beat that one, you'll then go through a gym battle and 2 dungeons (if you choose to get flash) so by the time you get to it you've been a bit more compared to where the rival fight is. Choosing to do it after rocket corner further stretches the level difference.

Gen 1 solo runs usually come in three parts: 1. Do you have a good move for Brock? 2. Gyarados Hydro pump good AI with no set up. 3. Everything else.

Pokemon FireRed with only one Charmeleon with NO FIRE-TYPE MOVES we see a lot of love for the first forms, but what about a run with the middle stages? and since we already know it's possible with most first forms.. we even it out by excluding stab moves!

I think the lavender tower rival is easier because he isn't focused on battling. He just buried his raticate and doesn't have it in him, but he is putting on a face because his rival has appeared and he can't afford to look weak.

I think Gen 7 and Gen 8 are the only generations that can have an actual full only poison run, because Salandit and Salazzle have the Corrosion ability that lets you poison steel and poison types with status moves like Toxic and Poison Gas. You can hit them for damage with poison moves, though, sadly.

The Poison-only challenge would be "fully" doable in generations 7 onward, where Salazzle's signature ability Corrosion lets her inflict Poison status (not inflict Poison damage, sadly) on Steel or Poison types. That and stalling would technically work.

@@ZorotheGallade For sure, but you can use some decently strong mons if you're doing a poison-only run. It's not like you're stuck with first-forms, you'll have access to stuff like weezing and muk, so Agatha will be SLIGHTLY less difficult in that direction

You could easily get a dozen episodes out of the postgame of mystery dungeon, more if you want to actually complete most of the dungeons. My Prima guide has a flow chart in to tell you how to unlock the final mission, where Gengar asks for your help.

Can you do Pokémon with only priority moves (positive and negative) I think their low power or being hit first and almost complete lack of special moves will make it hard along with an entire stat(speed) not mattering will make it interesting, maybe gen 6 for water shuriken?

If I'm not wrong, Twinneedle works against Steel in Gen 2 for some reason. I might remember wrong, but it might help with the Steel situation.

Twineedle always worked against Steels because it's a Bug move, not a Poison one; what's strange about it in gen 1-2 is that it could poison Steel and Poison pokemon because they implemented type-based status immunities by just preventing pokemon of a certain type from being statused by attacks of their type (so no paralyzing Electric pokemon with Thunderbolt), but didn't account for attacks that can cause a status not related to their type, like the Normal move Body Slam being able to paralyze and the Bug move Twineedle being able to poison.

One thing i can't stand is saying why doesn't this Pokémon learn this particular move, it's in its name... no it's not. Remember this is originally a Japanese game, and was mostly a single person translating. Growl is Cry, which a proud dog does not do. Also Submission is called Hell Wheel (bulbapedia for source on both moves)

I've never looked this close at Growlithe's Gen 1 sprite and its eyes are funny. The frontsprite shows black eyes with white pupils but the backsprite shows... eh? I like to think he just has a couple vertical black pixels for eyes and a little white patch over his nose.

Steven would absolutely be brutal, even with the ability to use non-poison moves on the Steel types. Armaldo has to take not very effective poison damage, and if MDB uses poison types for the run, Metagross will probably wipe the floor with them. I'm hoping he doesn't even try, tbh, that fight will suck in that run.

For the Poison moves only challenge, I think if you can only use normal attacks on *required* steel pokemon battles that would be fair. Would feel like a copout if you could use fighting/ fire attacks, but that'd just my opinion. Good you're doing Emerald since Steven is optional.

10:38 yeah, there's no point fighting the pokemon tower rival until you've got the silph scope, but you aren't meant to know that going in; you're meant to go up, fight the rival, and then get completely blocked by the ghost marowak, at which point you realise you have to get the silph scope, which sends you to the next city. Doing silph co first is the most obvious sequence break in gaming history, but it's still a sequence break.

See, I didn't realize the Silph scope was a thing in this game when I was a kid, so I used the pokedoll. That lets you skip the Marowak, and for the longest time I thought that was the correct answer. My Gameboy broke before I ever even realized team rocket had a base below the game corner, much less got the Silph scope.

I know you don't use the badge boost glitch like our good pal jrose does but I feel like keeping agility and using it would have helped you out more than replacing it with fire blast, but its your run and you do what's fun for you. I actually tried this same run months ago, and Agility is a lot less useful than it looks on the surface since the big brick walls (Lorelei and Lance) don't give you time to set up, you have to eliminate their pokemon asap; so while it saves *some* time beforehand, you still need to get to level 80 with a high DV Growlithe to reliably get past them, especially the Gyarados.

Trivia: There is a player theory that the evolution lines of Kangaskhan and Cubone were originally connected and that Cubone wears the skull of it's dead Kangaskhan mother for protection. So your baby-Kangaskhan run is essentially a Cubone run

Bodyslam helps way more for misty 160 power (2 Bodyslams) vs 100 power (1 dig ) plus paralysis chance and two attack means that they can crit more Dig is just worse than bodyslam unless the opponent is weak to ground

Before watching: Actually not sure about this one. Seen you succeed with Pokemon with a lot worse stat. And it‘s a mono type, so no 4-times weaknesses, which are usually the toughest obstacles. Also, Flamethrower and Dig are really good moves, so is Bodyslam. Coverage isn‘t too bad. However, Dragon Pokemon will be tough and your Rival‘s Blastoise has high defenses and you have no effective move. And the Ice Elite-4 could become an issue too with all the bulky water pokemon. Frankly, my prediction is that it‘s mainly an easy run, with an insane steep difficulty spike at the end. After watching: Yep, that was kinda like I expected. The Rival was easier than I thought, really expected Blastoise to tank more. Other than that, pretty much as I thought. Nice run! Keep‘em coming :-)
