My father in law told me when it comes to clamps they can be expensive to buy tons of them all at once so what you do is either every paycheck or every time you go to a store like home depot/harbor freight etc... you buy a clamp or two even if you don't need them at that time. Over the course of a year two you will eventually have enough clamps to serve in any capacity without breaking the bank.

Meh, not so much the impact driver. If someone is starting with nothing, the impact driver merely speeds work up, doesn't really enable doing anything more except "maybe" drilling holes if a hex shank drill set was included, and if the benefit is just drilling holes then might as well make it one of their $10 special corded drills. Even then, meh no, save the money and pick that up at a garage sale or pawn shop later, as the idea that everything needs to come from the same store makes no sense in reality.
@theindooroutdoorsman6 ай бұрын
@@stinkycheese804 Let's start with the end. Nobody ever said you had to buy everything from one store, or even suggested that you should. They had a video idea and went with it, one store makes filming easier. I used one store as an alternative, again, because of ease. Now that we've addressed that... An impact driver can be used for automotive work as well as general around the house work. Which objectively makes it the better choice given how close in price drills and impact drivers are these days.
@severalwolves6 ай бұрын
@@theindooroutdoorsman When I moved into my first apartment, I’d put together a modest little hand tool kit, but almost immediately realized I needed the impact driver for so many purposes. Tool bag, socket set, plier set, screwdrivers, carpet knife, jumper cables, flashlight, emergency LED triangle, Allen keys. Built the car kits for my wife & my cars years ago. Was on a road trip to palm springs & didn't take into account BMW uses torx for everything so when a window regulator broke on the road I hadda add a set of torx sockets from Autozone. Glad I kept the tool bag in my car for the trip though! Over budget but handy is a jump pack and tire inflator. This kit should be in every car.

I think Sam's single-use tool comment is spot on. I tried one of those all in one kits when I was a new home owner and the screwdriver was rounded off in a few months and the hammerhead was loose. I suck at home repair and DIY and even I had replaced every tool in there within 3 years.
@weege5.456 ай бұрын
@@ecoKady It's a starter kit. It's also an indicator of what tools you need to invest for longevity. New homeowners may not know this yet. I think $100 is I very low, especially with inflation, and this is the level of quality you can expect with $100 compared to what I spent on my first set of framing tools, and that cost over $100 for belt and hand tools. A coworker went to harbor freight first, spent under $100, and had to replace his framing hammer, tape measure, and speed square after a month and his bags were fraying. Never had to replace any of my tools because they broke from regular use, it's because they fell into places I couldn't get them (Screwdrivers, drill bits, punches, a chisel) or I dropped it off a ladder (my favorite tape measure).

I always get my friends drywall putty when they first buy a home because I know they're going to need it and that they won't think about needing it. Y'all screwed up by not getting that Anvil tool kit. I bought the almost identical HDX version for my now-wife so she'd have some tools in her apartment. It came with her when she moved in and I use that thing all the time. Super nice to have a set of tools in the house/upstairs all in a compact kit. I haven't broken any of the tools and the quality is decent on everything except the little mini spring clamps. Rarely do I need to go out to the garage and find a better tool when doing the kinds of quick maintenance tasks you do inside a house. It fills like 90% of the first time homeowners needs. Has metric and imperial hex keys and the adjustable wrench is actually pretty decent size!!! they don't skimp on a tiny 5-6" one like most tool kits. The current $45 price seems a little bit too high, but if you can find it on sale it is worth it. Throw in a saw, some channellocks, some kind of square, a picture hanging kit and a multipack of sandpaper, maybe a small socket set, and you've got a winner for $100. Oh, and some diagonal cutters since it looks like the Anvil kit cheaped out and swapped the wire cutters for a bottle opener.

You should have grabbed something with a 10mm socket. Duck Tape is great, and WD-40 but I find myself only using those maybe once-twice a year for home repair projects, not something very often. If you’re building IKEA furniture you NEED a right angle way to screw in things since that furniture is brutal without it. So maybe a right angle bit driver? Another thing is a light source? What if you’re working on your drying machine, you need to replace the power cord in your new home but can’t see what you’re doing? You’re replacing the P-Trap in your restroom sink and have zero light? A solid light source is a must if you include that as a tool. Honestly wire strippers as well are great, but you can get by with a solid utility knife. A Milwaukee Fastback is a must here.

and you're going to be able to do all that negotiating within the 30 minutes? I kind of doubt it.

I would love to have a beginner setup like this!! My dad wasn’t handy and I didn’t even get a screwdriver hand me down. I have to slowly build up a basic tool collection now that I moved into my house

The general purpose "homeowner" kits are usually pretty decent for the cost. I bought one from walmart and I still use over 10 years later.

You guys only checked one clearance section at Home Depot. A lot of times there are better clearance. Power tool options and what Home Depot calls their race track. There are yellow tag clearance items all throughout the store. Not just on that end cap.

23:45 should’ve asked him how he would’ve voted if one of you put that kit in your selection.

I just came here to say I wanted to say I bought the compact mini screwdriver simply because Sam said it was a great idea. Next time do a harbor freight shopping list for the DIYer!

Harbor freight. Just the tool tiering there will make it way more interesting

New subscriber here and as a homeowner of only 4 years my favorite stores are Home Depot, Lowe’s, and of course the king, Harbor Freight. Would love to see the other two included in this challenge.

When it said general i automatically thought about getting some from each category…I would have included a pipe wrench, maybe a level. And i definitely would have included a multi meter or a voltage tester..I actually got a combo kit with both at HD for $14.99
