My dad wanted me to share his comment because he doesn’t have a KZbin account. Dad (Don) says: the major difference between the influence of the Holy Ghost and the gift of the Holy Ghost, is that with the gift of the Holy Ghost, you not only feel the truthfulness but you can understand the gospel. A major example is the apostles of Jesus Christ, who were pretty much clueless about what he told them. But they knew that he was the Messiah and taught the truth, they just didn’t understand what he taught them fully. For example: He told them more than once that He was going to be killed and rise on the third day. But when it actually happened they were totally surprised. But after the day of Pentecost, when they received the gift of the Holy Ghost, they became very different, they understood and taught the Gospel with power and strength.

I remember the time when I first received the gift of The Holy Ghost. I was like "woah, this is awesome!" Since I got one spiritual experience after the other, but it's different now after a couple of years. When I think about it, it hasn't really changed, but I have been so used to it that I don't pay as much attention to the grandness of it as I used to do.

One common way the difference is explained in the church is that the Holy Spirit can be felt by anyone when it is witnessing of truth and when it is invited by doing things that are of God. When one receives the Gift of the Holy Ghost, it becomes a constant companion to guide, comfort, protect, bear witness of truth, and more, as long as the individual doesn't drive the Spirit away by making choices which grieves the Spirit. But one can immediately invite the Spirit back if they choose to correct the thing that drove the Spirit away. Often the Holy Spirit will prompt us multiple times to do something until we either do it or choose to ignore it all together. We can also ask Heavenly Father for the Spirit to be with us to invite it and feel it with us.

I've had three unmistakable witnesses of the Holy Ghost. On other hand I'm not so great at recognizing the still small voice. I know others whose testimony has come about in just the opposite fashion. They've never had an overwhelming witness of the Spirit but have come to their testimony through small whisperings of the Holy Ghost.

We are biological beings with varying levels of chemicals running through us. It makes sense we will feel the holy ghost differently, some a little, some more intensely, while others not much at all. The Holy Ghost therefore is experienced in difference ways other than just feelings and we need to learn how we individually experience the holy ghost. I also love that quote from Elder Christofferson. One additional thing to note is that the Holy Ghost is integral to our tutoring from the Lord and receiving Christs grace. Our ability to become perfect in Christ is tied directly to the Holy Ghost as we "practice heaven" (term from Brad Wilcox in his talk "my grace is sufficient"). We can only be made perfect in Christ with the aid of the gift of the Holy Ghost which will carry on into the eternities until the Lord says we are finished.

Love the Sam analogy 😊 I also like that it's hard to know when the spirit talks to you, but it's easier to know when it left you. I remember one time I did not want to listen to the spirit, I really had a track record of it. Specifically, they wanted me to talk to a certain girl that I found incredibly annoying. I had just gotten out of a relationship, so romance was stuck on my mind. I realize now that a romance between us probably wouldn't have happened. One day as I was arguing with these promptings o felt the spirit leave me. A physical feeling of aloneness went across my body, from the right side to the left. It was like something had been pulled directly out of me. I no longer felt prompted. I should have repented immediately and gave her a shot, but I was too stubborn. A couple months later I was in fast and testimony meeting and I felt strongly impressed that if I didn't get up and speak, I would lose my testimony. I didn't get up. I didn't lose me testimony immediately, but within a few weeks it was was gone. Now here I am, a few years later trying my hardest to rebuild the relationship I lost. It's taking a lot of time, fasting, prayer, and repentance. I guess what I'm trying to say is listen to the spirit bros.

We feel empty when the Holy Ghost is not present. As we humble ourselves and seek the presence of the Lord… “…in faith, with an honest heart (no agenda), believing that we shall receive”… then the Holy Ghost and His revelations, inspiration, promptings, presence, and disposition to do good… - helps us make right decisions (whether we recognize His “still small” help or not-He does not draw attention to Himself), - gives us peace, - enlightens understanding, - increases love of and faith in Christ, - perhaps brings forth tears of Light, Peace, and Joy (TearLight), - gives confidence and power to do as directed. The Holy Ghost is a director, sanctifier, revealer, comforter. You can know you are feeling the "burning-transfiguring and refining fire" presence of the Light and Power of God-The Holy Ghost… because He gives you comfort and peace, makes you more Christlike, and gives you power to do as your heart and mind are feeling is right-which we can and should pray for “confirming revelation” concerning as Pres. Eyring has taught. The devil can give none of these Divine Witnesses. The Lord looks on the heart. If we are willing and wanting to do right... the Lord is in it and will direct and course correct as needed... and we will know it and Love Him, give thanks, and let Him prevail... even more.

Response to the idea of... receive the Holy Ghost and Gift of the Holy Ghost... Yes. We are to "receive the Holy Ghost." In this sense, without losing proper reverence, the Holy Ghost is the essential "Gift" of the Spirit of God that we are to chose to receive and live so we can. The Holy Ghost administers all the gifts of God. In this sense, like Christ is a Gift from Father (the Annointed One)... the Holy Ghost is a Gift from Father in Heaven (the APPointed Administrator--APP)... by which we access all other gifts of the Spirit.

Several movies have companions to the protagonist who fill a role similar to the Holy Ghost, like Samwise does in the Lord of the Rings. Another example, of course, is Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio. Another comparison, if baptism is the trailhead, would be a GPS device with gentle notifications about the path ahead. It won't force us to stay on the path, but might send notifications to rescuers so they know how to find us...

I’m curious to know if anyone has a specific answer to the question. What are the benefits of the gift of the Holy Ghost that LDS members have, but other religions don’t. How would you explain it to a member of, say, the Pentecostal church?
@Rudyard_Stripling Жыл бұрын
Holy Ghost The third member of the Godhead and a personage of Spirit, not possessing a body of flesh and bones (D&C 130:22). The Holy Ghost has been manifest in every dispensation of the gospel since the beginning, being first made known to Adam (1 Ne. 10:17-22; Moses 6:51-68). The Holy Ghost is manifested to men on the earth both as the power of the Holy Ghost and as the gift of the Holy Ghost. The power can come upon one before baptism and is the convincing witness that the gospel is true. By the power of the Holy Ghost a person receives a testimony of Jesus Christ and of His work and the work of His servants upon the earth. The gift can come only after proper and authorized baptism and is conferred by the laying on of hands, as in Acts 8:12-25 and Moro. 2. The gift of the Holy Ghost is the right to have, whenever one is worthy, the companionship of the Holy Ghost. For those who receive this gift, the Holy Ghost acts as a cleansing agent to purify them and sanctify them from all sin. Thus it is often spoken of as “fire” (Matt. 3:11; 2 Ne. 31:17; D&C 19:31). The manifestation on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2) was the gift of the Holy Ghost that came upon the Twelve, without which they were not ready for their ministries to the world. For some reason not fully explained in the scriptures, the Holy Ghost did not operate in the fulness among the Jews during the years of Jesus’ mortal sojourn (John 7:39; 16:7). Statements to the effect that the Holy Ghost did not come until after Jesus was resurrected must of necessity refer to that particular dispensation only, for it is abundantly clear that the Holy Ghost was operative in earlier dispensations. Furthermore, it has reference only to the gift of the Holy Ghost not being present, since the power of the Holy Ghost was operative during the ministries of John the Baptist and Jesus; otherwise no one would have received a testimony of the truths that these men taught (Matt. 16:16-17; see also 1 Cor. 12:3). When a person speaks by the power of the Holy Ghost that same power carries a conviction of the truth unto the heart of the hearer (2 Ne. 33:1). The Holy Ghost knows all things (D&C 35:19) and can lead one to know of future events (2 Pet. 1:21). Other names that sometimes refer to the Holy Ghost are Holy Spirit, Spirit of God, Spirit of the Lord, Comforter, and Spirit.

There must be opposition in all things because that is what gives us agency to choose between good and evil so it is important to note that the adversary or Satan can mimick the feelings of the Holy Ghost very close, he can't however give the feeling of deep peace that can only come from the Holy Ghost. Anyone can be deceived by thinking they received information from the Holy Ghost when it was actually from the adversary. It takes practice and learning to distinguish between the two for sure. People that get high on drugs can feel something similar to the Holy Ghost but that is definitely from Satan. Having the gift of the Holy Ghost helps tremendously from being deceived and being led to unhappiness.

I think it's hard to do for many saints because it's not something most who were born in the faith/baptized younger have a good comparison line. For them, most of their living memories happened after baptism at 8. That's been my problem. I usually try to give something from within my own reference point....which is the difference I experiences before and after I went through the temple for my endowment. Funny enough, several of the promises tied to the gift of the HG are also tied to the temple: gift of knowledge, greater discernment between right and wrong, spiritual power, etc. Before experiencing this covenant I still had access to these gifts...but after there was a definite increase in their potency. I noticed it in things like a greater sensitivity to things that are wrong that one happened almost immediately....but I know that after my endowment there was a greater capacity for me to receive, understand, and grow in the spirit. And that's what I assume happens after baptism. One's experiences of God can become more developed. I think another analogy would be going on a hike while camping. Everyone at the campsite will experience nature, but that experience will differ as the go up into the mountains. Sometimes subtly and sometimes dramatically depending on where they're headed and the elevation reached. Everyone experiences God/HG if they seek divine help/experiences. But it'll be a different experience with God once one is on the covenant path.

The spirit doesn’t withdraw from us. We withdraw from the spirit when we sin. The spirit is on the covenant path always. When we stray from the path, the separation is then created. So when the Lord withdraws his spirit, it’s as if he is withholding his spirit from you as you distance yourself. For example, I liken it to a freeway. The covenant path is the freeway and the spirit is the signs on the freeway, directing our paths and showing us the way to the savior. All the things we see off to the side of the freeway is sin. All the big billboards and bright lights advertising sin and enticing us to exit. The off-ramp represents lust, envy, contention, gossip, covetousness etc this off-ramp leads us to more sin like murder, adultery, idolatry and more. When we take the off-ramp to sin, the warning signs are there, such as slow down, or there’s a change of speed, there may be speed bumps, traffic lights or a prepare to stop sign etc At this point the Lord may withhold His spirit from following you into sin. The Lord has his eyes on us always as we navigate the backroads and alleyways of wickedness, loneliness and despair, hoping we make our way back to the freeway of safety and peace. Providing us signs on the road pointing us to the nearest freeway entrance. When we sin and feel guilty, this is us remembering all the signs of safety and peace we ignored when we took the off ramp. Only when we decide to use the on-ramp of repentance to get back on the freeway is when we will feel the spirit once again because it has never left and is always there. Great is our joy when we are back on the freeway that leads to Salvation through Jesus Christ. Taking the off ramp or the on ramp, staying on the freeway or staying off the freeway are all things predicated on your agency. You have the choice, the free will, to decide these things.

@@-BROWNMONK- Yes... our perception of the Spirit dims as we leave the Covenant Highway. And... if the Spirit did not reach for us from the Covenant Highway, staying with us to some degree... we would never feel the loving "pricks and promptings" of the Spirit encouraging and inviting us to repent--turn again to the Lord and His Covenant Highway. The moment we, with honest heart, turn again to the Lord... He succors us--runs to us--and helps us back onto the Covenant Highway. We are never truly alone. It can also be likened to a child leaving their parents side at the fair grounds. The child wanders off enticed by what they see. Soon they may feel fear because they realize that they have lost sight of mom and dad. Mom and dad do not leave the child... they look for the child and call after the child until the child is found and delivered safely back to the side and presence of the parents.

Lectures on Faith was approved as scripture in the 1835 D&C. Jospeh and the entire church approved of this doctrine of the Godhead and faith specifically. In 1921 a few men on a church committee couldn't reconcile the doctrine put forth regarding Lectures on Faith specifically regarding the Godhead. Jospeh taught the following: Question 3: How many personages are there in the Godhead? Two: the Father and the Son. Question 13: Do the Father and the Son possess the same mind? They do. Question 14: What is this mind? The holy spirit. Why was the Godhead that Jospeh taught removed from scripture and replaced with the precepts of men in 1921 and now we have a created holy being or personage that is known as the Holy Ghost when in fact the Holy Ghost is the mind of God? The Holy Ghost is the mind of God and all can receive and feel it. The LDS has corrupted what it really is and has replaced individual faith with doubt because of unbelief.

I totally disagree with what you wrote down, God the Father governs all things, Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost do the will of the Father by their agency. @mattenger7064 Жыл бұрын
@@Rudyard_Stripling I hear your comments. When you start to learn things that are truths but have been concealed by the precepts of men, it becomes hard to know what is real. If you do some research you’ll find that Lectures on Faith was approved as scripture. You can read about the Godhead in Lecture V. If you take the concept that the Holy Ghost is the mind of God, it now opens up the scriptures in a way to helps you - or your spirit- to become Holy. You also can be a Holy Ghost through the sanctification of the Holy Spirit. This might help some: Alma recounts the many blessings the Nephites had received in their generations: Having been visited by the spirit of God, having conversed with angels, and having been spoken unto by the voice of the Lord; and having the spirit of prophecy and the spirit of revelation; and also many gifts: the gift of speaking with tongues, and the gift of preaching, and the gift of the holy ghost, and the gift of translation. According to Alma, these many blessings come from the spirit of God and include the gift of the holy ghost. “If God sustains everything through His holy spirit, which is also sometimes called the Light of Christ, then is it not already within you? If it is already within you, then you can decide to ‘receive’ it by opening yourself up to its influence. If you decide to ‘receive’ it by opening yourself up to its influence, then you may be able to take it into yourself as a gift from God[.] If that gift becomes a permanent source of influence within you, then have you received the gift of the holy ghost? If this is within you, then is it your own? If your own, then do you have the holy ghost as your constant companion?” The holy ghost can come and visit with a person but not tarry with them. If it comes and visits with them, then it is said the person has “received” the holy ghost. This kind of visit is conditional. It is dependent upon the worthiness and desire of the recipient. If they “grieve” the spirit by misbehavior, it will depart from them. For the holy ghost to become a constant companion which tarries, it is said to be the gift of the holy ghost, because the one with this endowment has received a gift from God, and it is given to them by God to be theirs. Baptism and the holy ghost have always been linked together, but laying on hands has not always been included. Baptism and the holy ghost are linked whether or not there is someone who can lay on hands to give the gift. Baptism precedes the holy ghost, and the holy ghost always follows, if the baptism was proper. The only condition for receiving the holy ghost is sincere repentance before baptism. If a person is sincere, then the gift follows automatically. Nephi relayed some truth about baptism and the holy ghost: And [Christ] said unto the children of men, Follow thou me. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, can we follow Jesus save we shall be willing to keep the commandments of the Father? And the Father said, Repent ye, repent ye, and be baptized in the name of my beloved Son. And also the voice of the Son came unto me, saying, He that is baptized in my name, to him will the Father give the holy ghost like unto me. Wherefore, follow me and do the things which ye have seen me do. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, I know that if ye shall follow the Son with full purpose of heart, acting no hypocrisy and no deception before God, but with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the Father that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ by baptism - yea, by following your Lord and Savior down into the water according to his word - behold, then shall ye receive the holy ghost. Yea, then cometh the baptism of fire and of the holy ghost, and then can ye speak with the tongue of angels and shout praises unto the Holy One of Israel. But behold, my beloved brethren, thus came the voice of the Son unto me, saying, After ye have repented of your sins, and witnessed unto the Father that ye are willing to keep my commandments by the baptism of water, and have received the baptism of fire and of the holy ghost, and can speak with a new tongue - yea, even with the tongue of angels - and after this should deny me, it would have been better for you that ye had not known me. And I heard a voice from the Father saying, Yea, the words of my beloved are true and faithful. He that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved. “Therefore, according to Christ and the Father, as reported by Nephi, the steps are: one, repent; two, be willing to take upon you the name of Christ; three, be baptized; and four, …the holy ghost will come upon you.” There is no mention of laying on of hands, because the process and promise given by Christ and the Father does not require laying on hands. It only requires exactly what Nephi reported from conversing with Christ and the Father. Likewise, in modern revelation the Lord explained His Gospel while omitting any requirement for laying on hands for the holy ghost: And verily, verily I say unto you, he that receives my gospel receives me. And he that receives not my gospel receives not me. And this is my gospel: repentance, and baptism by water, and then comes the baptism of fire and the holy ghost, yea, even the Comforter, which shows all things and teaches the peaceable things of the kingdom. Similar to Nephi’s explanation, Christ makes no mention of laying on of hands in this revelation to Joseph, because it is not required. Christ set the example. He was baptized and immediately received the holy ghost. No one laid hands on Him. The gift was given because of His qualification for baptism. But there have been those who were given conditional authority to bestow the gift. They could only do so by consulting with the Father and Christ beforehand to ensure it was God’s decision, not man’s, to give the gift. Christ, however, can give the permanent gift of the holy ghost by His touch.

From 1835 lectures on Faith. 3 From the foregoing account of the Godhead, which is given in his revelations, the Saints have a sure foundation laid for the exercise of faith unto life and salvation, through the atonement and mediation of Jesus Christ, by whose blood they have a forgiveness of sins, and also, a sure reward laid up for them in heaven, even that of partaking of the fulness of the Father and the Son, through the Spirit. As the Son partakes of the fulness of the Father through the Spirit, so the saints are, by the same Spirit, to be partakers of the same fulness, to enjoy the same glory; for as the Father and the Son are one, so in like manner the saints are to be one in them, through the love of the Father, the mediation of Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit; they are to be heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. (The Father and the Son are one in purpose, in the will of the Father obtained through the spirit and Jesus Christ's own choices of using his agency to do the will of God the Father at all times. The Holy Ghost likewise has agency which he has chosen to do the will of the Father.)
