I actually LOVED President Nelson’s bday lead up. We were able to talk about the 99+1 and focusing on doing something for the Savior by finding “the one” with our primary kids. Kids LOVE to celebrate birthdays, and this gave them a focus on Christ for their special gift.

I always find it interesting when non LDS people try making the argument that all you need to do is to accept Jesus in your heart and you will be saved through grace, ignoring all else that the Bible mentions that we need to do, like being baptized and keeping the commandments. As long as you accept Jesus, you’re good! Yet in the same breath they will say that you only have the duration of this life in order to do so. To say “there is still time” is to say “you’re not dead yet, so you can still accept Jesus, but once you’re dead, it’s too late and you won’t be saved.” Contrast that with LDS belief which says that you need to follow Jesus’s example and commandment to be baptized and then do all you can to keep the commandments. But even if you don’t do so before death, that’s okay because there is still time to follow Christ after you die. I grew up Lutheran and while I knew God loved me, I never understood why He loved a “piece of pottery” so much to let His Son suffer and die for me, or what the point of the commandments were if all I needed to do was say “I accept Jesus” in my heart, and how that truly insignificant act made the difference of whether all your dreams became a reality in “heaven” or you were tortured for eternity in “hell” after you die. Such huge consequences for an insignificant object in the universe performing a singular individual act that had absolutely no universal consequence. But when I learned that God loved me because I was literally family, His son, and Christ loved me because He was my brother, the love of God finally made sense. Learning that the purpose of life was to help us grow, becoming more as individual beings, and more importantly, more like our Father to the extent that we could potentially have eternal families of our own made life (and eternity) make sense! I don’t understand why people would have such a huge problem with such a beautiful doctrine, or how/why they would believe anything else!

ok wow. um so i am a non denominational christian. there are so many things that mormons believe that are so contradictory with the real God breathed scripture. here’s one Luke 13:3: "No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish". i know it’s dark but it’s true. also there’s no where it says that baptism and keeping commandments are necessary for salvation. that is a crazy catholic belief. you will be blessed if you keep the commandments and grow closer to God and baptism is a symbol of your faith. if you respond i can give you direct verses displaying that. and that last part is complete blasphemy. while you are jesus’s brother Matthew 12:48-50: Jesus pointed to his disciples and said, "Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother". you will NOT have your own planet. tell me this. jesus is clearly prophesied in the old testament but why isn’t joseph smith and brigham young prophesied in the old or new testament. maybe there an example of jesus speaking on false prophets Matthew 7:15. Exodus 34:14 for you shall not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. your false prophets are the jealous blasphemous evil racist polygamous god. God loves you and i am praying for you. God died for you and saved your sins because he created you and loves you. why would he not die for you.

@@Rhowen02 when you mentioned Luke 13:3: where does it contradict that baptism is necessary for salvation? Baptism is the logical answer after repentance. The Bible repeats at multiple times that baptism is mandatory for salvation: John 3:5 “Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.’” Acts 22:16 “And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name.” Romans 6:3-4 “Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” 1 Corinthians 6:11 “And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.” Titus 3:5 “He saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit…”

@ baptism and obeying the commandments is needed, Jesus taught us. John 3:3-5 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. One of the things I would like to see discussed more often. Is how our church leaders are actually just average every day guys. They may have a lot more spiritual experiences than we do because of the positions they hold. And I love hearing their stories. But I also like hearing their failures. I love hearing how they are just common people with families and how much they love the Lord. But I like hearing their stories when they talk about things that have happened to them in their common every day life. What is your thought on it? I just think from some of the friends I have that are not members of the church That they look at these guys as if they are some kind of saints that we should worship. I love the leaders of the church. I also feed their council when they speak to us in conference. But I also know that they make mistakes the same as I do. And the saviors grace is the same for them as it is for me.

I joined the Church way back in 1962 when I was 11 years old. I have Never Once Doubted having a living prophet and living apostles. It just makes perfect sense to me. If we believe the Bible to be the word of God and they had living prophets then, why not now? And who are they to judge whether or not God can call a man to be a prophet? Does God need their permission on how to run his own Church? They are very arrogant and closed minded. But then, the First Vision didn’t come to them now, did it? It came to Joseph Smith. And Heavenly messengers appeared to Joseph and others, not to them. So they really don’t know how God works. It’s too bad. If they would just open up their hearts and minds, and humble themselves, then Heavenly Father could work a mighty work and a wonder in their lives, too. I’m truly grateful and blessed to be a member of this Church. It’s amazing to me how God , indeed, moves in mysterious ways to bring about His Kingdom on Earth. Thank you for your podcast. It’s great. God

Joseph Smith should be proud either way. He died to give me the greatest gift, a more accurate description of God and Jesus and their character. A clear knowledge of the doctrine of Christ. I'm confident that the leaders of the church were led by the spirit to determine the best way to celebrate President Nelson's birthday and what they did was the result of that. I think people look for reasons to shame the church and its members for how prophets are treated. It is not worshipping a golden calf or prophet worshipping to honor the accomplishments of a prophet who has turned 100. It is an amazing thing to have a prophet of God leading the church at the age of 100. This has not happened since the church was restored. It should be celebrated.

Wilson doesn't realize that the argument he's making to kiss before being in a romantic relationship with someone is the same argument people use for living with someone before you get married. "I can't get married to someone without living with them first because what if I don't like this or that about them. Then it's too late." Kissing on the lips before being in a serious committed romantic relationship with someone can definitely lead to attachment and ignoring things that are wrong with the relationship. I've never heard that said before, but I know it is definitely true.

Guys I totally agree about the Godhead vs. Trinity. As for me, it's pretty illogical how a father and a son can be in the same being and coeternal. And if God the Father equals God the Son, how come he came down to earth, got a body and then prayed to Himself in Gethsemany? And then he died and resurrected in a sort of glorified body that He later lost when a part of Him called the Son returned to the other part of Him called the Father to reunite? All those questions are answered by the concept of the Godhead.
@rdancranston

Regarding the “golden calf” comment for Pres. Nelson’s 100th birthday. Maybe it was a little over-done but many of the people complaining are the same people who enjoy watching celebrity honors. But the post said Jesus needs to receive more honor and celebration. The first Presidency and the Elders who are apostles and the 70 honor our Savior Jesus in their words and lives. Thus that comment seems like nit-picking and maybe because it was for someone who is LDS.

"A related reason The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is excluded from the Christian category by some is because we believe, as did the ancient prophets and apostles, in an embodied-but certainly glorified-God. To those who criticize this scripturally based belief, I ask at least rhetorically: If the idea of an embodied God is repugnant, why are the central doctrines and singularly most distinguishing characteristics of all Christianity the Incarnation, the Atonement, and the physical Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ? If having a body is not only not needed but not desirable by Deity, why did the Redeemer of mankind redeem His body, redeeming it from the grasp of death and the grave, guaranteeing it would never again be separated from His spirit in time or eternity? Any who dismiss the concept of an embodied God dismiss both the mortal and the resurrected Christ. No one claiming to be a true Christian will want to do that." -- Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, The Only True God and Jesus Christ Whom He Hath Sent, October 2007 general conference

Hi! I commented on Keystone as well. But I wanted to comment here. I’ve been watching Saints Unscripted for a while now, and I’ve always loved Faith/Beliefs segment, especially the videos that cover harder topics (e.g. Polygamy). But I would really you guys to do a video on the topic further. Ive been trying to do more research on church history and doctrine (I’m approaching college soon and really want to be prepared when I hopefully serve a mission), but I recently discovered that men can be sealed to several women (and additionally, women can’t). I know we don’t practice polygamy anymore, and though it’s still definitely controversial, we don’t know everything on that topic so I’ve made my peace on that matter. I still have questions, but it’s not hindering my testimony or anything. HOWEVER, why do we still practice such a polygamy based sealing arrangement? Should I just do my own research? I’ve read a church essay on it, but I didn’t get much out of it. I just would really love a discussion on the topic further if possible. 😁

@gingersnaps215

The Catholic understanding of the Trinity seems to be a bit different than the Protestant version of the Trinity, as far as “substance” goes (if I’m using that correctly). The few Catholics with whom I’ve spoken about this believe Christ is embodied, whereas the Father and Spirit are spirit. Most Protestants (of various denominations) believe they are all spirit, and none are embodied. Then there are those who believe in modalism (which is kinda like truly one being, but three “phases,” like how water can be solid, liquid, or vapor; this is technically a trinitarian heresy). And then there are those who describe the Trinity as partialism (like slices of a pizza; and another heresy), and those who think of it as Social Trinitarianism, which is an awful lot like the Godhead but not quite (I’m not up on the nitty gritty of how social trinitarianism is unlike our concept of the Godhead, but nerdy theologians out there are!) I just get hung up on the three distinct beings in one, and one in three. Which is how I think many of the heresies to explain the Trinity came to be in the first place 🙃

helps to first believe in a real God who offers salvation by grace. All you have to do is believe in the right Jesus and then the process of sanctification can start through which good deeds will flow. What the Mormon church gets wrong is thinking those good deeds have to happen to earn salvation or exaltation. Well aside from the whole fictional Mormon god thing. Anyway, good luck with that, you’ll fall short. Why do you think so many Mormons struggle with fears of their own celestial worthiness and can never fully repent of their accumulating sin? We have to show him that we value what he did for us and we want to live the way he did! You don’t need to fear not getting into the correct kingdom. One of our prophets during conference explained that he simply puts you in the kingdom with the rules that you’ll be able abide by! Hopefully you make it to the best, but EVERYONE on Earth makes it to SOME degree of glory (unless they deny Holy Ghost, but only if they like had a prophet level testimony of him). I don't know if he was addressing me or not, but his response was basically that it's okay for him to act that way because we're all satanists-which is precisely what I anticipated from him. He's already proven that he has no interest whatsoever in doing the right thing or obeying the commandments of God, so why would he have reacted any differently? About 18 miles from the Prophet Joseph Smith's home in Vermont, and in New Hampshire, is Darthmouth college. It was a college founded with the stated mission of converting the Native American Indians to Christianity, and an Uncle of Joseph Smith was a professor of Hebrew language there. Although, Joseph Smith's father was a drunk that was admitted into the Masonic lodge, Joseph Smith was not exactly uneducated (by his Dartmouth College association) or illerate, and undoubtedly most likely was dreaming of connecting Native American Indians to Christianity because of his Dartmouth College association. As for God being a spirit (Indians Great Spirit) in Joseph's Kirkland, Ohio temple's "School of the Prophets' "lectures", wherein Joseph used it to declare that God is a spirit. later, after Joseph got the Masonic 33°, Joseph declared God has a body of flesh & bones. These two commentators are attacking none Mormons with unsubstantiated and wrong accusations that none Mormons attack Mormon Doctrine. None Mormons never bad mouthed or care about attacking Mormon doctrine. It is our LDS Mormon Church Incorporated, that uses the straw man excuse of saying they are persecuted & attacked. Besides, all Protestant Churches are pastored & membered by Freemasons. :.

You seem to misunderstand a lot of what you just wrote. Where did you get this misinformation? Dr John Smith was not Joseph's uncle, why do you think he was? By your logic the fact that Iggy Pop grew up less than 20 miles from the University of Michigan means U of M influenced his music. Not to mention by the age of fourteen Smith's family had moved 200 miles away from Dartmouth, Iggy didn't leave Ann Arbor until he was an adult.

Jesus had a physical body to fully reveal God to humanity (John 1:14, Colossians 1:15), to live a sinless life as our example (Hebrews 4:15), to offer Himself as the perfect sacrifice for sin (Hebrews 10:10), and to defeat death through His resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:20-22). Unlike LDS beliefs, the Bible teaches Jesus’ body wasn’t necessary to become a god but to fulfill God’s redemptive plan for humanity, showing that salvation comes through His work, not through progressing to godhood (Ephesians 2:8-9).

We don't teach a Body is necessary to be God, Jesus Christ was God before He had a body, and The Holy Ghost is God too. Exaltation is not synonymous with Godhood.

19:30 I am a Latter-day Saint, I grew up Latter-day Saint, I've never been Catholic or Protestant etc. but I would guess that other Christians would say something along the lines of God is a Being that we cannot comprehend because we are mortal. Perhaps similar to the way humans can't really comprehend infinity. Because of this, God has given us ways we can relate to Him in the Bible. Concepts, including that God is love and God is goodness. He is truth and life. But also He asks us to relate to Him as Father. Other Christians (I think) do refer to God using male pronouns not because He is a man but because that is how He taught us to relate to Him, as a Father. Ultimately, God's condescension to becoming man as Jesus is the ultimate way we relate to Him. So while God is not a man we can relate to Him because He became a man through Jesus. Hopefully that's not too off-base and it makes sense. I just think it's important we, as Latter-day Saints, acknowledge that other Christians, like us, do think through their faith and have reasons to believe what they believe.

The Triune conception of the Father reflects too much Hellenism for me to make sense of it. Baked into the idea seems to be that God cannot have definitive being because that's not how perfection works, which reminds me almost exactly of Platonic thinking.

So I am LDS very true believer of God and Jesus Christ and everything that happened before this is what I struggle with we are supposed to know Jesus Christ but we know nothing of him other than his teachings and this is not to make fun of by any means at the end of days we're supposed to know him but we know nothing of him only what was written and his teachings so the end of days we could be told he knows us not so do we have anything about him that actually teaches us about who Jesus Christ is on a personal basis this is a honest question so we are veiled are memory of God and everything we do not remember of Heaven how can we have a personal relationship when we actually don't remember our true father and this is again not making fun of what's your favorite color what's your favorite food what's your favorite activity and you can keep asking the questions but there is no response the only response I've ever gotten was that two ladies were trying to find spirituality in the church non-members both of them have decided not to join which is fine but I Felts defeated going to work someone grabbed me told me they love me a couple of people saw this the imprints of someone holding me why doesn't are heavenly father walk with us like he's walk with her ancestors warmer than anything I felt and true love ever in my life more than my parents can ever give me

We do!! You find it the same way you find any well written book character. Most of it isn’t said outright, but His character is shown in the stories of the scriptures. He has a great sense of humor, he’s so darn witty, and SO compassionate. Even when he’s at his most tired, he can’t resist helping the beggars who run after him (my favorite is the part before the loaves and fishes) Another thing that has helped me so much in the Scriptures is putting myself in their shoes. I get so much of a more personal understanding of who they are when I compared to how I would’ve reacted. Like Nephi is told to build a boat after he traveled for 100s of days in the wilderness, and “suffered every affliction save it were death”. (Also god had told him to CLIMB A MOUNTAIN to talk to him right after he had just set up his tent!!) I WOULD HAVE DIED. But he was like YES SIR!! Anyways, I hope that helped a little.

Holland may very well believe in Christ, he may very well believe that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God.
