Great video! I noticed that my pinkies are turning in towards my other fingers. I have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis along with scleroderma, lupus, etc. I will be asking my rheumatologist about the splints during my next visit. Thank you!

It seems like most doctors state that nothing can be done about arthritis in the hands and the deformities caused by it ... short of a radical surgery of an affected joint ... which seems that would cause more issues than it fixed.

I agree! Yet there is proven research on alternative solutions that can be very helpful and less invasive than surgery.

Sorry for the dumb question but, what is "small finger"? During both the ring portion 4:00 and Oval 8 portion 6:58 you mention each time "pushing against the small finger" when each time I don't understand what you mean. The "small" finger to me is the pinky. Your index finger for the examples looks straight, so it's hard to tell which way I'm associating it with. Is the example for the ring splint (picture was showing the left hand) meaning pushing toward the thumb, which is smaller than the index finger, hence "small finger"? Or pushing toward the middle finger, which actually isn't really a small finger in and of itself, but is in the direction of the pinky, which IS small, yet two fingers away? The Oval 8 example is you putting it on your right hand index finger (which is straight to begin with so I wasn't sure if you were giving an example that the finger was to be deviating toward the thumb or middle finger), and again saying to put the Oval "toward your small finger". To make this personal, needing exact instructions because I don't want to make it worse: My right hand's middle finger has lateral deviation going toward the right, meaning it's going toward my ring finger, and away from the index finger. A ring needs to be placed on my DIP joint on the middle finger. If it's Oval 8, what side is the oval on? On the side touching my ring finger or the side touching my index finger? Same applies to jewelry: is the wide part on the side that touches my ring finger, with narrow end touching my index finger? Or opposite: with the wide end touching my index finger / and narrow end touching my ring ringer?

Small finger is the smallest (outside finger). Also called pinky by children in the UK but this term seems to be used by adults too in the U.S and Canada.

Any advice for index and middle fingers that are twisting (not leaning) towards the pinkie?

My left pinky was broken by someone and my pinky hasn't been the same. It's the closer to the base of the pinky, does a splint work for this purpose? Also am 22 almost 23 It might be a bone problem though idk

I have severe osteoarthritis in the saddle joint of my left thumb. Hurts like hell. My hands hurts all day every day...achey. My fingers are not crocked yet though thankfully. I DO NOT want to take NSAIDS. How do you deal with this achey?

There are gentle, yet effective exercises that are backed by reserach to increase the strength of your hands without aggravating your joints and simple ways to protect your finger and thumbs joints to help slow down the progression of arthritis. can taping only, the distal finger joint of index finger help?
@VirtualHandCare3 ай бұрын
Taping can be another helpful option but it may not provide enough stability and your skin may get aggravated overtime.

Hi Michelle, Nancy Drew from Thumb School here. I have tried wearing plastic Oval 8 splints on a couple of my DIP joints that are starting to lean towards my pinkies They fit OK when I go to bed but during the night they start to cut into the delicate old-lady skin on my fingers. Would (expensive) metal splints do that as well? Thanks!
@VirtualHandCare2 ай бұрын
Hi Nancy Drew!! I love it when your 'name' pops up! The more expensive metal ones would be little more comfortable due to the roundness of the metal and custom does fit better. However you may like more of a gutter or trough style like the ones made out of a thermoplastic material. Those can be adjusted and you have less points of pressure on your skin.

@@VirtualHandCare Thanks! I will try the thermoplastics. I added your finger mobility exercises to my Thumb School maintenance routine some time ago and my hands feel great. Consistency is SO key - I rarely skip a day and can feel it when I do. I am actually kind of shocked at how much improvement I have seen in my hands overall. Thanks so much!
