The plug thing is a glow plug that initially heats to start the ignition of the diesel and then turns off when the temperature is high enough. There's a mesh around it that can also clog up. Spares are ten a penny on eBay due to the ultra mass produced nature of these heaters. The smoke does indicate that the fuel flow might be a bit high, and the solenoid pump was going like the clappers, so it may need some experimentation to find the sweet spot for efficient burning.

Cheers Clive. I knew i needed to mess around with it to make it burn better. I turned the flow rate down later but didn't record that, it seemed to do the trick, the smoke disappeared.

There is a hollow tubular screen around the glow plug that you can get out with a lag bolt. Make sure that that screen is clean which can be burnt off with a torch. Also make sure the little hole that goes to the side of the screen is clear.

Run it on low when required but turn it up to full onions for 15mins before switching off. That should burn the soot off 👍🏻

Brake cleaner spray for the last of the soot residue !!👍🏻

Ive cleaned a severely coked up diesel standby heater/coolant preheater from a Volvo before and I found Oven Cleaner works wonders on dissolving the solid burned in residue. It was so bad that black crumbs came out of the exhaust upon disassembly and they had pulled the fuse to disable the heater because of the stink and smoke. That heater coked up so severely because it was never cleaned in 18 years of service and the fuel nozzle was defective. When I fired it up after reassembly there wasnt even any smoke from the exhaust just a faint diesel heater smell 😊

Excellent. Im sure itll get clogged again so ill be able to use the brake cleaner then👍🏻👍🏻

The secret to these heaters is that they need to be ran hot. I have one myself. Thats how you keep them burning clean run them for long periods of time so it can get glowing hot and cook off everything nasty inside.

@@jointechcabling9103 technically these are ready to run out of the box not a lot you can adjust on these. Controllers have a secret menu I believe. Its a dead simple system too: The "fuel nozzle" isnt really a nozzle its just a drip pipe and the fuel pump isnt really a pump its a metering device. Every time the controller sends a pulse to it and clicks it delivers a set amount of fuel to the burn chamber where it basically just dripfeeds into.

Just having a look on the Eberspacher website. Expensive outlay but very efficient and well supported product.

id upgrade the exhaust pipe too if you're using the one that came with it, going to be thin and poorly made, probably leak over time and the last thing you want is carbon monoxide poisoning.. id have no one to watch hanging off the end of 4 core 240 and making it look easy 🤣

@@jointechcabling9103 follow the instructions on where to locate it. also worth mentioning most detectors don't actually alarm until they hit what i'd describe as an absurd amount of carbon monoxide. 50ppm for over an hour sort of thing.
