@@Winners-Only If you are going to take on guys like Winston again, then consider this with your coach. We can't use the same swing for every ball on the forehand because not every ball will fit comfortably in the racquet to slot it so when the ball won't slot clean it just pops out of the strings and sails all out of the court with little to no spin. This is why we use the flat finish for the easy balls, and the compact finish for dealing with all the difficult hard balls in the court including the short low dirty balls you have to really run up to, wide difficult balls Or any difficult ball that has you all on the run. or that you have to dig it up out of your shoelaces, Your backhand Slice scoops under the ball and sits up short and weak in the court praabbly because of using the wrong grip which opens the strings too much under the ball as I like to close my strings and you can't afford to do that with guys like Winston. They will be all over it.

Interesting how the camera makes a difference on the perception of the ball speed. Trey's serves in the first set looked massive. Probably closer to how they would look in person. Overall nice practice for Trey to understand what an experienced 4.5 (which was not being aggressive or playing his best) looks like. That being said Trey just needs more court time. He is well on his way to reaching his goal.
@TenisAmador
@TenisAmador 7 ай бұрын
The "which was not being aggressive or playing his best" is deceiving. He just couldn't play better, exactly because of what Trey mentioned in the end: the pace was not steady, there were erratic balls, and Winston had to generate the pace and be more aggressive. That is hard. And that generates a lot more mistakes, or you just need to "hold your arm" to keep the ball in the court. IMO that was wxactly the real level that Winston plays. Yes, he plays better against better opponents, but he can't crush guys like a 5.0 would.
@gab_ale
@gab_ale 7 ай бұрын
@TenisAmador I saw Winston playing too slow and tentative. Could be Winston is out of practice against lower lvl opponents and changing rhythm threw him off. He did say he felt the pressure that he had to win. Still, he was being too careful. That's what I meant by him not being aggressive. But I understand very well that playing down takes practice. I'm a 4.5 and mostly play against friends that are 4 and below.
@MrPatrickbuit
@MrPatrickbuit 5 ай бұрын
@@gab_ale That is how every player of that level looks against someone who's worse. Playing against better players doesn't actually make you play better. It gives you the illusion that you're playing better, because the opponent is generating a lot of pace for you. It's the exact same reason why most 3.5s will feel great playing against their 4.0/4.5 friends but then proceed to lose to a pusher of their own level.

@@gab_ale Fortunately one of my best mates has a very defensive style with lots of slices. I got used to approaching the net against him, so I’m not scared of pushers anymore. New subscriber here! Love the channel! Amazed by how good your serve is after so little time playing! Forehand very promising too! I imagine you're working a lot on the backhand and volleys? I'm no expert but if you don't mind a little advice, I think you need to close the right hand a bit more on your backhand, so it's a full continental, just to keep that racket face a bit more closed at contact. Follow through over the shoulder more too, it looks like you're checking the stroke and not letting it really fly. Looking forward to more content like this, keep it up Trey!!

One tip Trey. When you play at a rec level, sometimes junk balls work or off pace serves. The more pace you give to higher level players, the more they tend to like it. Get some more variations. Your serves looks the same each time. Kick serves, slices, etc. Drop shots, angles, forehand slice. Try it all and see what works.

I think Winston played better this set than last. Trey seemed to drop a bit. Still pretty competitive overall. Trey does need to work on his backhand. He doesn't hit through the ball, but rather abbreviates his swing. I think partially a timing issue plus he doesn't have any drop on the racket - swing is too linear. I have similar problems on my backhand except I have a decent racket drop. Trey foot-faults with his right foot on most every serve, sometimes having the whole ball of his foot not just on, but totally INSIDE the baseline particularly on the deuce court side... That is visible from the other side of the court so people could legitimately call him on it... One thing I definitely like about Trey's game is he is not afraid to play aggressively! I think that's part of why he has improved so quickly!! Trey mentioned that he was going to continue to come to the net even though he rarely wins a point up there. Courageous, but not smart. For improving, that's a good mindset. For winning matches, it's all about focusing on what is working for you and not working for the opponent.

Some thing I'm noticing as a fellow rec player, because I'm working on some of the same things: 1) you wait for balls to come to you to much. Winston is giving you short balls esp. off the serve, because your serve is big. good example is 10:03, that ball is on the service line and it's not jumping with heavy top spin. if you take two steps up and clobber it, that changes the point significantly. 2) related to 1, one of the reasons you find this hard is you just watch your balls too much. You follow through and take a sec to see if it's a good one or not. You can see an example of this really clearly at 8:50. You should be looking at Winston and repositioning in that time so you have better angle coverage. 3) One of the reasons Winston is able to hit passing shots so often is because at least to my eye you seem to prioritize getting to the net rather than taking angles away. take the angles away!

Imo you have more headroom than Winston. You are quite athletic and naturally hit a pretty big ball on the FH and serve. He hits lazy slices where you try to step into a backhand. Once you start reading the opponent better you'll pick up on those drop shots and be able to handle them. The service motion is quite good and especially on clay I think you could hit a huge topspin serve. Net play and backhands will come if you keep practicing which I am sure you will given your channel content. This was a seriously impressive outing for you compared to where I saw you even a year ago in these videos.

Trey, seems like early in the set Winston was pressuring your forehand because you were recovering too far to the backhand side. Winston is forced to the forehand corner and you recover left of the center. I know you’re concerned about down the line which does seem to be more prevalent in 3.5/4.0. Winston is playing higher level guys that don’t do that, he’s playing the ball cross which is the right play. Your serve is good, getting it more consistently wider rather than in the body, I do the same though. Winston was just too comfortable with the loopy spinny rally balls.

your BH needs to work but that is typical of a 3.5. Winston is pinning you to that corner because you keep running around and hit inside out forehands - which is tiring. When u hit a strong forehand on your opponents forehand you should rush the net and expect a diagonal shot, dont be afraid to commit on the right side. Approach the right side of the net and challenge your opponent to hit a down the line winner which is a small % shot. You also need to work on your backhand, you need more depth. These are the 2 consistent flaws in your game i see, otherwise you play great for someone who only started a year ago.

Before I watch this video I can tell you there is absolutely no chance in hell you can beat Winston. Honestly I will be shocked if you can win more than one game. He is way too consistent and has played a lot of 4.0-5.0 players. His serve is really mediocre, and your serve is above average for 3.5, but that won't be enough. In general, you shouldn't be able to win more than 1-2 games against any 4.5. If you can, then they aren't a 4.5. Ok after watching, your serve is REALLY good for a 3.5. Better than Winston's that is for sure. 9:47 watch out for your foot fault. All things considered I think you played much more like a 4.0 than a 3.5. Your groundstrokes are looking better and more consistent. Gotta work on that approach shot though. I think if you fix your net game you'll be a 4.0 no problem. I would also work on smoothing out the acceleration in your forehand. Sometimes you dead stop your swing with your racquet behind you, and then attempt to accelerate quickly from that position, that's going to cause a lot of errors.
