Thanks. I’ve been wondering about exactly when I should move my container maples to a more protected location when we have wild swings in temperature here in zone 7 (probably 7A because I’m on a ridge). This info helps. I have been moving mostly the smaller containers when we get quick drops in temperature, but when we get unusually low temperatures every few winters, I move all of the containers into my garage. Now I feel like I’m doing the right thing and not wasting a lot of effort unnecessarily. These videos are so informative and helpful.

I planted a very small seedling in a pot and it sits on my desk. Right now it has 5 small leaves, starting with just 2. I took the seedling from under my fully grown maple tree. It's doing well, but how do I winterize such a small tree just starting out? Keep it outside and put it in the ground pot and all? I really don't want to lose this infant tree. Isn’t the size of the pot a function of whether a JM would be ok left outside unprotected? If a tree is in a 3 gallon vs 1 gallon pot, what temperature should it come in to an in heated spot? Tip for ceramic pots: line the interior with a bubble wrap to help prevent the pot from cracking when soil freezes and expands.

Honestly it wouldn’t make that much difference in zone 5. We recommend outside unless in zone 5 in a pot. Even a big pot in zone 5 would need protection.

My Japanese Maples are on the East side of our house and semi shade. The leaves are ALWAYS looking ragged. We are in Lubbock, Texas and the label on the plant says direct sun. Just know that the label should be redone and direct the planting to North and full shade to work in the heat here. I love Japanese Maples and don't know what else to do to have decent looking leaves through the summer. 😪

Great discussion. Can people in Florida grow maples I hear maples need a dormancy period and if they don't get it the tree suffers and I guess eventually will die is that true?more specifically zone 9. Love the shows keep em coming. I hope we can get some shows in the spring of all these amazing maples u have done in leaf so we can see them! Thanks

Zone 9 Florida yes but zone 10 Florida typically does not work for humidity. I’ve had customers in Miami but it’s not ideal

I'm in zone 7 near OKC. Sometimes we get a freeze after the JP's leaf out. Is there anything I can spray on them for protection besides putting covering? I had this happen last year and lost a few. I have to many lol. Fifty plus now! I bring in the potted ones it's the ones in the ground. Also how about grow bags instead of pots?? I Dig da Bro's lol but mostly plants I'm addicted. lol

You mention planting the container into the ground. As they grow do you transplant them into a bigger container and then plant that container back into the ground and repeat the process? Or do you recommend just planting them into the ground with out a container?

Additionally, you have to protect a potted maple from wind gust, wind chill factor will take the zone down significantly

Hey guys, love your vids. We have just purchased a Japanese maple about 6-7ft tall in a pot. I know you say they shouldn’t be grown inside but are you able to do a video or answer some questions about if we want them to be an indoor tree and the best way to keep them alive…. The reason I ask is a coffee shop in brighton, UK, had one in their and we fell in love, they have it thriving inside for years now. We are based on the Gold Coast, Qld. Our tree is next to a big window and get around 3-4 hours of sun in the morning. Thanks

They do lot grow inside unfortunately. Maples Work zones 5-9 and need a real dormancy period. Inside confuses them until eventually they die off

Do you know what kind of zone south east Queensland is? I just put the tree outside to get some sun today(we’ve only had it a week) and a lot of the leaves have gone really dry all of a sudden .. ahh help! Ha

@@user-vo7nt8bu5c they will get some shock if they have been inside. I’m not familiar with that area and it’s likely a different rating that the USDA zone system. I would try some shade as it adjust. It may drop all its leaves but if it forms buds below the leaves that is a good sign

Hi, great video. I was wondering what you would do in zone 3. I live in Winnipeg and have been trying to overwinter a potted Japanese maple. I have failed 2 years in a row getting the tree to come back after spending the winter in my unheated garage. I don’t get a lot of light in the garage and it mostly stays above freezing but gets below freezing for at least a few weeks in the garage. Outside it goes to -30 for weeks at a time. Suggestions?

Maples work outside zones 5-9 so zone 3 is going to be very challenging. An unheated garage is the best bet but make sure to water 2-3 times a month and let dry out completely between watering.

@@MrMapleShow thanks. I’ll give it a shot. I tried that last winter but didn’t know to water. In the spring I had buds and the branches were not brittle but I never got buds to turn to leaves and now branches are brittle. It came out after the last frost. I’ll try again and water.

I live just outside Bend, Oregon, they say I’m in a zone 5. We get snow every winter, I just planted my Bloodgood Japanese Maple in June. Should I mulch my tree this fall or wait until the first frost. Should I wrap the tree with some kind of plastic or cloth to protect it? Or let it’s feet get cold? Right now we have between 80 - high 90’s, I’m watering once a week should I water more often? Thanks for all your help in advance.

I wouldn’t put any mulch around it it promotes rot i just pulled out two rose bushes that are almost dead because of mulch it also promotes bugs I’m in 5b and have a bloods good in my front yard we planted it like 14 years ago its about 13 foot tall we didn’t do anything special for it ever and we have gotten down to -42 below

how can you water them if the pots are completely frozen? any water would either run off or just freeze in the container.

We actually recommend once the temperature is above freezing then water. If the soil is hard frozen then it may have had to much water in it to begin with so it shouldn’t be holding that much. Once the temperatures are warm enough then water.
