like the towel rail/blind idea .. another fix for this is put big press studs on the curtains/blinds and the other half of the press stud on the wall and snap shut. i use this on my boat and it works great.

Thats a good idea - much less unsightly than a wooden fiddle bar. In one room we did a "temporary" replacement using velcro that works well too.

Same washing machine cant do without one. I took off the door into our bedroom from the walkthrough and put in a curtain so t feels like a swish en suite! If we have visitors we pull the curtain, but of course keep the door from the living area to the walk through! I used the same curtain as blunds so it looks ok!

Snap - we have a curtain between our bedroom and the living area too in the same material as the curtains!

Ladies, The pipe in the bathroom going out the window is normally referred to as the VENT! My wife constantly complained to me after I did a sit down because she would be waiting to use it and scream like a stuck pig. Gawd!!! It stinks in here!! My reply? Well your the one that chooses what I eat and your cooking is great!! Her response to that? Axxhowle! Even using some flowery spray to cover the stink shed complain now is smells like a plumber getting ready for a date! Congratulations on finishing the bathroom errrr the Loo I mean. Oh yeah don't forget to use laundry detergent that is friendly to the fish and other wildlife in the canal. A washing machine, that must feel like a great luxury not having to lug it to a public laundry. There is a radiator you can buy to replace the one in the Loo that is designed to allow you to place wer towels and wet clothes on it to dry them out. When using the hot water radiators such as using the excess hot water the engine generates the Loo radiator should always be wide open to avoid the system from overheating with no where for the excess heat to go and prevents it from boiling over. Cheers Ladies!!!

Regarding the kitty litter keep you eyes open for a square plastic container with a sealed cover to store the kitty litter in to maximize the storage space. The cat food here in the states is sold in 38 pound plastic containers that are square with flip up metal wires with wooden handles so it doesn't kill your hands. Easy to reveal and easyt o remove the cover. Best of luck finding one or two or more. Cheers!!

Thanks for the tip. We normally have the excess kitty litter in a tub but this time I bought a massive bag and its too big for the tub. Everything here seems to come in bags but those containers you describe sound really useful.

Great nice video of the bathroom makeover, you did a really great job! I do have to say that there should be absolutely NO jumping in he shower, or hoping in the shower either just stepping in and out and standing. This is a running joke in my house whenever anyone says they are going to jump in the shower really quick they are told that if they crack the shower base by jumping in the shower they will be responsible for fixing or replacing it.

Looks great ! Well done! You're amazing to achieve all that. Our shower passing place is very useful too, as we have the tiniest narrowboat bathroom ever seen!. We say, "Oh, can you do a half-shower please," (that's one foot, and most of the body in) and "No, that's no good, you need to do a full shower..." And, hopefully, it's dry in there, and wellies aren't required.

Ladies, There is a type of hinge that allows the door to swing both ways. Think of the American western bar type doors. So if you were to get that style of hinge it would give you the best of both worlds. In? Out? In? Out? Cheers! Sorry couldn't resist! :-)

Thats a good idea for a narrowboat door on our next boat!! The doors on this boat are bigger than the door gap so they overlap on the one side and can't swing. But I really like the concept.

Well done. I just tried to replace the switch on a wall light and ended up breaking the light. I’ve now bought a replacement wall light and I’ll leave it to the boatyard to fix. In cooler weather is the cooling system for the engine piped into the heating radiators throughout the boat? If it is I presume you use the radiators to use the waste heat from the engine while cruising which means you use less coal. Just thinking out loud. Cheers!

Why not put a mirror on the other side of the door could be easier then redoing the door. Maybe?
@TheNarrowboatExperience

There was another reason I wanted to move the door - I just can't remember what it was. Maybe because moving it would confuse the cat and stop him from popping the door open whenever he wants.

Does this vid qualify as toilet humour?! its true, one should always close the bathroom door when using the "mirror" - especially the morning "mirror" Either way, so jealous - i cant wait to paint our smallest room white. One Q is - do you run your washing machine from your batteries via an inverter or only when connected to shore power?
@TheNarrowboatExperience
@TheNarrowboatExperience 6 жыл бұрын
We’ve only tried it on shore power. But I believe our inverter is powerful enough to run it off the batteries. And this is something I only plan on doing while the engine is running.

Did mention changing the waste pipe on the sink, or was it just the type of drain?. Did you leave a "P trap" on it? It serves a dual purpose for you. 1 it collects anything you drop down it like rings and other jewelry (the reason I've had mine apart so many times because I'm a klutz) 2 with your sink dumping out into the canal above waterline it'll stop bugs from entering the boat via the pipes, because of the captured water in the trap. I'm probably misunderstanding, but figured I'd toss it out there in case.
@TheNarrowboatExperience
@TheNarrowboatExperience 6 жыл бұрын
The waste pipe still goes to the same place. No 'P trap' though I see your reasons for including one. Thanks for the tip for anyone planning the same.

@TheNarrowboatExperience
@TheNarrowboatExperience 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dulcie. I think for the most part we like the composting toilet and recommend it. It feels like less maintenance than the porta potty and less smelly. And we don't have to buy any blue. If we go away again for a long time, I think we will make sure the toilet is empty, turn the fan off and close the window. Its a tough choice - they aren't cheap but you can get DIY versions that cost a bit less.

LIKED THE BATHROOM THINKING OF DOING OUR BATHROOM UP ON OUR BOAT ANY SUGGESTIONS TO MAKE LIFE EASIER
@TheNarrowboatExperience
@TheNarrowboatExperience 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin. Whilst we are happy with the finish of the splash wall, it is very heavy as it is MDF backed. So if we were going to do it again, we would either get it cut to size before delivery or there are (so I found out later) PVC alternatives that are easier to manoeuvre. I was going to say easier to cut but if its anything like cutting a bath panel to fit, I don't remember that being easy either. The plans I drew out before starting also helped because I knew that everything was going to fit. It was also helpful to really plan out what I needed to buy and make sure we had everything before starting for the day - there is nothing worse than cutting a pipe and realising you don't have the right fitting to re-connect everything without stopping work and making a trip to the hardware shop.

Hi there, I think we got it from Homebase and i think it was end of line- we had it from when we did the bedroom. It is solid oak. It's lovely and it didn't cost too much. we had to match it as best we could with what was already there.

Yay Do you use your washing machine from the batteries power or shore line?
@TheNarrowboatExperience

At the moment, only shore line. I was going to run on the batteries when we were out last but we were a bit low on water by the end of the week.

Could you tell us what model number your washer is...we are renovating our narrowboat bathroom, and have been watching your renovation closely. This washing machine would make us very happy. Does it plug into both hot and cold water and do you know how much power it draws because our inverter is only 1800 w. Hugs Lonnie and Dave nb Augusta

Hi Lonnie and Dave It's only a cold feed. I have read about people that connect the cold water feed to their hot water pipe to save the machine having to do the heating and using less power. But I didn't do that because it sounds like you lose control of the water temp and end up shrinking your clothes. Here is the product fact sheet. It says 0.92 kWh on a standard 60 cotton wash. docs.whirlpool.eu/_doc/PFF088702EN.pdf We only really run it on the quick 20 min wash and it doesn't seem to use up much water but I also think we have a big water tank because it lasts us a while between fills.

The Narrowboat Experience thanks for that. We still need to finish our floor before we get the machine. We had an old rusty toilet tank that had to be cut out...angle grinder and so much mucky stuff...has taken ages. There’s still a section left to be cut out before we can get the flooring level and tiled (adhesive tiles...not quite brave enough for real ceramic). Then the washer and our nature’s head :) can go in. We are still a bomb site...your final result is an inspiration for us. Hugs from Lonnie (Aussie) and Dave (pom) and nb Augusta

Ohhh, I think I found a bathroom use for coffee filters. I should also get a pack for my own Nature's Head. :)

An idea for you, have you considered a sliding door? Then you don't have to worry about the door swinging into something?
@TheNarrowboatExperience
@TheNarrowboatExperience 6 жыл бұрын
Hmm might work, thanks for the suggestion. Although looking at it now, I think the door is wider than the walls on both sides and there might be nowhere to slide it to. Someone else suggested a roller door, which in my mind is like a giant roller blind.

placing it so it slides behind the shower wall would be the easiest place. Oh well, next refit I guess. : )

+andysnat : Please upload a video of you doing that 😨 I'm always on the lookout for _washing machine cooking hints._ I used to cook my sardines in my car engine-bay in the 1960's when I was a country salesman far away from lunch-time eateries.
