Oh man, model rocketry is great fun! In elementary school I used to make paper stomp rockets and low powered (like max engine size C) model rockets and launch 'em with my dad. That launch in the parking lot reminded me of when me, my dad, and my friend launched a small model rocket in a parking lot of an unfinished movie theater lol. I've made a decent bit of small-ish model rockets, and my dad is going for a level 2 certification to launch some pretty damn large ones. Eastern Washington has a great rocket launch festival, which is good fun but unfortunately cancelled these past few years due to wind and uh... well the major global event that's been cancelling literally everything. Still wanna try and find time to do some launching again, and homemade motors look incredibly fun to mess around with.

I wonder if, besides the iron oxide, the insufficient prolonged thrust could have been fixed by introducing a more complex grain pattern that reveals more surface area, just as large-scale solid rockets do. Granted, that solution would have created higher chamber pressure, also leading to exploding.
