A word about late 40s early 50s fashion. Most coats,clothes, ect had extra ease built into the patterns because times were tight. Fabric, for example was still being rationed in England up to the mid 50's. Of what my grandmother and great grandmother told/taught me (having been a wife and teenager during the era) they grew up in the Great Depression, Use it up wear it out, was still very much the prominent mentality. Wide coats and extra fullness in tops,skirts and trousers let a wardrobe go through thick and thin. (Pregnancy,ect) without becoming useless. As an interesting aside, trousers were perfectly acceptable lounge or work wear. However, no lady got dolled up for an evening and went out in pants. My grandmother wore dresses out till her dying day because wearing pants was a sign of being low class and poor when you were in town.

My mama was of that generation too and she would never wear pants into town either. She never wore the color red as it was apparently scandalous, but was seldom seen without red lipstick. 🤷🏾♀️ She made all our clothes and she always made very deep hems. When my pants were too short she’d add a kick pleat and a border of extra length or sometimes ruffled bottoms.

Good restaurants wouldn’t sit a woman wearing pants. In Paris this was up to the ‘70’s. Catherine Deneuvue did a model add for Givenchy (or YSL?) and she was wearing a ladies tuxedo and it was a bit scandalous. I’ve seen bits about it on some vids about couture. I don’t know when it became acceptable here. I remember as a kid in the 70’s changing to a skirt or dress when we went out. So I’m guessing about then here as well, but it’s a guess. My family grew up with use it up as well. Clothes that didn’t fit during part of pregnancy was considering a luxury.

most older women wore “house dresses” when home even up to the 1970’snwhen other women were in slacks and peddle pushers (capris). Now at age 69 I appreciate the practicality of dresses once I discovered how gentle on the back the dress is over pants. Severe spinal arthritis is a fact of life for many of us and waistbands with any structured waistband, no matter how loose, hurts when bending or just getting through the day. I have also made some fold over fabric waistbands for a couple pairs of pants and those work but dresses are my preference as they were for my grandmother and aunts.

Lovely coat. Silly story about a swing coat. Mum was married at 19 to her childhood sweetheart, who was in the Royal Navy. They were visiting his Mum when he was on leave in WW2. My Mum wore a swing coat that she had just made. Her Mother in Law was delighted, she assumed Mum was pregnant. I understand that she was so disappointed when she discovered she wasn't about to become a Grandma. Moral of story, swing costs can fool even the best of them! You made a great job using what looks like a rather difficult pattern, and some confusing instructions. Those pockets are perfect for carrying dog treats

I had a very similar experience to yours with Posy: I adopted Lilla when she was about 6, and she had already had one side of breasts removed, but within a few months she had more tumours and had to have the other row removed ... in the meantime, she ALSO went into heat within a month of me adopting her (although they had told me she was already spayed... not their fault: they were just repeating what the previous owner had told them) so when she had the tumours removed she also underwent a full hysterectomy. And, like you, I had to carry her up and down the stairs for two weeks so she could go out to do her business - and I live at the top of a medieval building in Italy, so no lift, and lots of wonky stone stairs! BUT, long story short, that was nearly six years ago, and she has had no more cancer problems apart from some small, non-malignant skin "lipomas" (fat lumps), and is still living happily ever after with me, and still cuddling up to me every night under the duvet! I hope you and Posy will have many, many happy and healthy years together, and bring each other happiness and comfort. Now, before I forget - this is the cutest coat ever!! I want it! And you are looking absolutely lovely and christmassy too, with your green hair: all you need is some baubles and tinsel, and you would look like an xmas tree-fairy! Happy christmas to you and yours. best wishes, k

When we adopted my dog, we were told she had been spayed and treated for GI parasites. She had a spayed tattoo and a shaved area. First, we found out she had additional GI parasites that hadn’t been killed off, then - once she was getting the nutrition from the food she ate, instead of the parasites - we realized she had mange mites. We treated the mange, and then our “spayed” dog went into heat. Turns out she had been prepped for surgery been somehow missed in the assembly line style of surgeries at the shelter. Six months later, we found out she tested positive for heart worm, which she most likely had the early stages of when we adopted her. FINALLY, after that, there were no more medical issues. She is a very good dog, but boy was her first year with us wild!

Right?? Maybe you’ve seen these around but you can even make collars like that separate from a garment and fasten them by tying in the back. So you could sew up a collar like this with a simple white woven cotton and sew on some black bats as an appliqué really quickly and then add it to any outfit Aka what I plan on doing immediately lol

I love this style of coat, I think it always looks so elegant. The shade of green in the fabric is so pretty. I'm not usually a green person, but this kind of Jade shade teamed with the black really pops. You did a great job on this one too, as you always do. What's a few hours between friends? the fact that could make in that short a time frame is amazing!! I wish I was that quick and proficient, but I will enjoy watching you instead... I would love to see this style done in a Shantung or water wave Taffeta, or maybe a Shot Taffeta, with a matching, slim-fitting frock...I think that would be so smart and stylish, and very 50's :) I'm enjoying how many people are getting into "Retro" fashions...I guess it's like my mum used to say, "Hold onto a thing long enough and it'll come back in fashion eventually". When I think of all the clothing we threw out over the years, because it was "daggy" and old fashioned, now it's everything...we could have saved and made a fortune, either wearing it again or selling it to the next generation of collectors...

Love your hair colour! It really motivates me to see you make a coat in such a short amount of time. My own coat project feel overwhelming and like it would take months. But really, a coat is not that hard. It is just a lot of fabric involved when I have a knee length pattern and there have to be fashion fabric, interlining and lining.

Hi Angela, I’m sure I won’t be the only person to suggest this but two or three heavy duty black snaps under the collar will solve the problems with the hood and be hidden when not in use. Thank you for everything you do, you have inspired me to start dressmaking again after many years. Much love.

@@MegaMagicdog Because not everyone, even today, has the safety and social security to not laugh and/or to call some one out for being a jerk, especially someone with a large following of loyal fans who might get upset about that and turn on them (we've all seen that happen elsewhere, sometimes to horrifying effect). So the targets of the "jokes" laugh instead so as to not draw even greater negative attention to themselves. It's called "appeasement" and it's a huge part of de-escalation as a survival behavior. It's also something you'll find everywhere being used to excuse racism, sexism and all the other 'isms' that involve power dynamics as being "okay" because "everyone's laughing, right?"

The coat looks beautiful! I don't have a good-looking coat for myself so would love to make one like this. As for the inconvenience of the hood, maybe you can sew another set of buttons a little bit below the ones you already have for the hood so that you can attach the hood without crossing the dangly bits. Then you would be able to have the hood on without the need to unbutton everything when you put on and take off the coat.
@Angel-su9zt4 жыл бұрын
Loved this! Have you thought of adding extra buttons around the collar of the coat so that the hood could always stay attached? Kind of like how removable hoods now are often just a bunch of snaps? It might take away from some of the historical accuracy, and maybe interfere with the collar, but all in all might make it more wearable?
