Don't forget your state symbols if they ask for it while writing chemical equations! When you're doing a mole concept question and have no idea what's going on, literally just convert everything you can into moles. 99% of the time, things make sense afterwards. 6:43 There is an element that has 5 oxidation states (+2, +3, +4, +6, +7), and that is Manganese! This is the interesting thing about transition metal elements, is that they can have different oxidation states (because they possess d-orbitals) and these properties allow transition metal compounds to have different colours (both solid and solution) and intensities. I majored in chem for my degree and I can say that aside from organic chemistry, transition metal chemistry (or coordination chemistry) is one of the most interesting but notoriously difficult branch in chemistry. If you’re interested, you can look up some topics such as Crystal Field Theory (CFT).
@wonjontheaxolotl4 ай бұрын
omg a true chem genius!! that is really really cool thanks for sharing! i have no idea what orbitals are but it sounds interesting :)
@myu_on4 ай бұрын
@@wonjontheaxolotl I’ll try to explain with whatever chemistry I know :) An atomic orbital is like a fuzzy “cloud” or region of probability in space in which you have a possibility of finding electrons. There are 4 kinds of orbital subshells (groups of orbitals) called s, p, d and f subshells (there can be more (and there are!) but I don’t have any idea what they’re called and what their properties are). Different orbital subshells have different energy levels in which they can stay. s subshell starts to appear starting from energy level n = 1, p subshell from n = 2, d from 3, etc. here, n is called the “principal quantum number”, which states the energy level in which an electron resides in. Different orbitals also have different shapes. s subshell contains only one s orbital (s), whose structure is just a sphere. p subshell possesses three orbitals, (p_x (oriented in the x direction), p_y (y direction) and p_z (z)), each of them having the same structure resembling a dumbbell. d subshell possesses five orbitals, with their own unique orientation and structure. Same goes for f subshell, with 7 orbitals with complex structures and orientations. I hope this gave you a reasonable introduction to orbitals, I tried my best to not make it look too confusing 😅
@wonjontheaxolotl4 ай бұрын
@@myu_on ahhhh so its something like the properties of the different electron shells in the thingy, wow thanks for such a detailed explaination
@myu_on4 ай бұрын
@@wonjontheaxolotl yep, you’re welcome! :)
@shaikhameerul4 ай бұрын
@@myu_on That is a great explanation! I’d like to add a bit of extra infos; As the principal quantum number (n) increases, a new type (or shape) of orbital will emerge for the value of l = n - 1, where l is the angular quantum number. For example, n = 1, l = 0 (s orbital), n = 2, l = 1 (p orbital), n = 3, l = 2 (d orbital) and n = 4, l = 3 (f orbital). Now, these l values can range from -l to +l (in integer values), for example, n = 2, l = 1, the l values can be -1, 0, +1. These three values are called a magnetic quantum number (m) which describes the orientation of those orbital shapes in 3D space. Thus, as a specific example, n = 2, l = 1 represents the 2p orbital which is dumbbell shaped and has 3 subshells with different orientation in 3D space (2p_x, 2p_y, 2p_z). Note: all three of these subshells are degenerate (meaning they have the same energy level). Each subshell can hold 2 electrons, totalling to 6 electrons for the p orbital. Basically, the pattern is as n = 1, 2, 3, 4… then new orbital shape can be s, p, d, f… which would have 1, 3, 5, 7… subshells, which means they can hold up to 2, 6, 10, 14… electrons in that specific orbital (noting that each subshell holds up to 2 electrons). Btw there are orbitals beyond f. This is because ‘n’ can theoretically be from 1 to infinity, and so is ‘l’. The orbital that comes after f is called the g orbital, which should have 9 subshells. This is what g orbital looks like (media.sciencephoto.com/image/a1520175/400wm/A1520175-5g_electron_orbitals.jpg). After g, they will follow alphabetical order. So s, p, d, f, g, h, i,.. etc. However, so far we only discovered 118 elements so there aren’t any elements that have filled g orbitals in their ground state yet. If a heavier element is discovered in the future, then we might see our g orbital elements. A little fun fact: Historically, the orbitals s, p, d, and f are given their spectroscopic names as ‘sharp’, ‘principal’, ‘diffuse’, and ‘fundamental’ respectively. If you’re interested, you can check this out: www.falstad.com/qmatom/ . This link leads you to a website where it will calculate and show you the orbital shapes based on the quantum numbers you select. If you want to see what g orbitals look like, put n = 5 and l = 4 (and choose varying m values so you can see their different orientations).
