I’m a Commercial Buyer here for a relatively big food company here in Singapore. Actually most food are relatively safe after passing expiry. The best before date (BBD) are generally just a guideline to ensure food safety for the general public. This is so to allow supermarkets to quickly sell out food near expiry and to throw away expired food. And in some cases, food pass expiry date might be undergo lab test to test its function and if all goes well, the shelf life maybe extended for further consumption. Our SFA does a relatively good job to keep food safe here in SG.

This stuff should be taught in schools. I’m French and when I first met my American husband and moved in with him and some other roommates I was dumbfounded on how easily they would throw perfectly fine food away.

yeah most of it depends on how its stored and what kind of food it is. I grew up poor so I have eaten a lot of expired things. ramen and canned food were made for long-time storage so I have no problems eating them a while after

I eat expired stuff too. It depends on the type of food, the storage and I will check with my eyes and nose before taking expired food.

i can tell you that oat milk, or most plant based 'milks' really, is definitely still okay to use past expiry date. i had an opened carton in my fridge that was three months past and still good in coffee. don't let the 'milk' part fool you into thinking it behaves like dairy. use your senses and you'll be fine

I eat expired food everyday. I don't go by the date... I rely on my eyesight and sense of smell more.

Good idea to freeze the bread slices in smaller portions using the lacy's zip bags!! I have gluten allergy and often buy near-expired gluten free bread from Marks n Spencer because they mark-down the price. I freeze the entire loaf and often have problems prying the frozen slices apart. Will freeze them in smaller portions from now on! For fresh produce, I usually use my senses to decide if they are safe to eat. But for dried goods like pasta, noodles, rice, biscuits etc should be safer to eat past expiry because no moisture = no bacterial/ no mould I've eaten weevils in rice before -> extra protein 😅

The type of packaging used will affect the lifespan of food. Eg, transparent laminated packaging vs aluminium laminated packaging.

Depends a lot on how good a cook you are. Good cooks can tell what can still be eaten better. Usually those who just throw food away tend not to be good cooks.

It really depends on what kinda food it is.... generally wet stuff (eggs, milk, fresh meat not frozen, etc. is a big no-no). Dried food generally is okay if it smells alright and no growth.

With prices going up, expired food is an option to reduce cost but be smart about it too; else the $ saved will go to doctor/meds..

Most expired food is ok, providing it isn’t blown, smelly or full of mould, my family eat all the time. It in doubt just chuck it out. That’s what I do, I learnt from my Japanese grandmother and she lived until 90!

Its ok to eat food after “best by” as its not expired. If expired best not to. Dry items like biscuits if expired a month still ok. Fresh food like fruits, veg, meat or diary don’t itchy backside look for trouble lah. Save money this way, end up food poisoning & spend more at the doctor 🙄

I think if the expired food goes through a process(like cooking) to kill the bacteria still okay, but to consume naturally, like milk, you are just finding trouble

Weaver in rice is very common in sg due to our weather regardless new or expired. ur mother probably feed and never tell you about it. If not how? Throw the rice meh. 😂

The only part I find grossest is when they all shared the fried rice using the same spoon and saliva....what a way to spread Covid. Lol
