The Guild Surfliner $699 Sweetwater: sweetwater.sjv.io/nLXLK6 is the newest wigglesticked offset in my life and I'm ready to explore it's modding possibilities. Mid video I decided to take the plunge and attempt a coil split on the humbucker for a surfier/twangier bridge pickup sound. I got it done but had some self inflicted snafus on the way.

Great video! I have a mod suggestion to make it the ULTIMATE SURF GUITAR. But since there's only 1 tone knob, you'll have to install it on the back cavity plate. If you get a blender pot (see Emerson 5-way blender) you can run all the pickups in parallel. This will allow the bridge and neck in parallel.

It's very easy. don't do it the 60hz way. Open the back and find the black and red wire that are soldered together with a piece of shrink tubing. These come out of the humbucker wire bundle. Attach these to two of the contacts of a three contact, two position switch. The other side goes to ground. Mount the switch. You are done.

That is a nice guitar. You mentioned the 2 main reasons for modding. I generally don't mod my guitars much anymore other than removing strap buttons and adding Gotoh tall bass string retainers in their place. Strap is more or less permanent after this. But since I build many of my basses and guitars, I experiment with those. Again, good video.

I feel for ya on the setbacks but it's how we learn (ask me how I know!). Great job in the end, Ryan! The must-have mod for me for any 3-pickup guitar is the 7-way mod allowing for bridge & neck together (my fave tone) and all three pickups at once. I do it for all my Strats. I kind of wish they left the switching capability they have on the standard Surfliner on the Deluxe (allowing for that neck & bridge combo or all three pickups) even though some folks dislike the standard Surfliner's control switches.

Yes! We put 7-way switching in all of our 3-pickup guitars. Usually we like to use pushbuttons for coil split and neck-in-any position because they never get in the way / never get triggered accidentally.

I recently picked up the original Surfliner because I wanted the individual pickup switches, plus I just really dig the look with the switches, funky pickguard, and translucent paint options. While overall build quality might be a little low in some areas (minor paint issues, some rough fret ends), I feel that the guitar is an extremely good value. The best part are the pickups, they have a great quack and chime. My future mods will be a Bigsby B5 and the coil tap, but that's about it. I have to say, I don't think I would have bought this guitar if not for your videos. In fact, my wishlist has grown massively since subscribing to your channel. Keep up the good work!

The bridge humbucker sounds great with the coil split! Once you get the pot wired the right way, you’ll be good to go. When you first wired it up and the tone control was shutting the guitar off at full-up, I remembered my ‘67 Gibson 345 that I had in the early ‘70s did the same thing. The bridge pickup tone control would turn the guitar off when it was wide open. I don’t know why-I’ve never had another guitar that did that. I just had to remember not to turn that control all the way up!

Rather than series/parallel, since you already have the humbucker, I might suggest a phase switch along with the other switches you mentioned. BTW, pots almost always have the same lug layout: picture the wiper inside the pot following the shaft rotation, like the hand of a clock. For tone knob, you want to use the center lug (wiper) along with the lug associated with full-CCW rotation, so that the tone capacitor goes through minimum resistance when tone is set "lowest".

@60 Cycle Hum I swear when I was on the Guild product page, when I clicked on 'show full specs', it said the Surfliner had a coil split option. But that's gone now, I guess they got a heads up. I was like pulling the volume and tone knob up like a madman when I read that but to no avail ofcourse. :D So tonight I saw your video and I put my brave hat on and did the mod myself. Pretty easy, I used the switch to short the black and red wire to ground. Coil split gives a very nice sound, I may prefer it over full humbucker. Oh and I also had the guitar for just about 5 days LOL! Thanks for the video and the inspiration!

Heads up! i recently just fixed my backwards wired pot situation and i also realized my split isolated the inside coil instead of the coil with the exposed screws. Electronics mods wise you could have a neck 3 way mustang switch, which would add your neck in with the option of it being in or out of phase. And then I'd have a series switch to put the neck in series with the bridge pickup - I've never tried combining that with a 5 way blade though! I'd ask the Gunstreet Wiring guy about those options.

I gotta admit, my guitar modding is usually in an attempt to save a guitar rather than personalize it. And not really in the "it's not good enough" sort of saving but in the sense of rebuilding to make it better when something goes awry, like replacing the pots in my talman when they started to get bad. I kinda want to replace the strat style trem on it with an offset style trem now that the knife edge of the trem has worn down some but not sure what I gotta do routing wise to make it work.

I think this guitar just may be a real "sleeper". I reckon you could pull off nearly any genre, not just surf and give any song it's own unique flavour. That humbucker splits PERFECTLY! they really SHOULD include that on the guitar as standard. Some humbuckers just don't split well. While others may produce a perfectly valid and useable sound but it doesn't really suit what's going on with the rest of the guitar. I thought in your first video with the Surfliner that it was a really great sounding pickup considering the style of the guitar, "Surf" guitars usually being more of a single coil kind of thing. When you split it though it seems to retain it's own 'characteristic' (for want of a better term,) tone somehow to me while simply having less bottom end and output as you'd expect from a single coil. Oh and you forgot a possible phase switch for the middle pickup if you want to go really hollow and quacky in your list of possible slider switch mods.. I think it really sends the versatility of this guitar through the roof. Would really love one of these. I am a big modder (I do guitar tech work, build pedals etc.) I have done both types of modding you mentioned. Almost every guitar I own I have done something or other to to make it my own I have a couple of Squier Strats right now. An Affinity I bought to travel to university and a Vintage Modified 70s, both of which which I've done extensive work on. Full level, recrown and polish of the frets, rolled the fretboard edges, different pickups (just inexpensive FLEOR branded ones that I'm actually really happy with), push pull pots, wiring, bridge, trem block, nut, string trees, the whole 9 yards. I wasn't in love with either of them when I got them (although the VM 70s has a surprisingly nice bit of flame figuring on the neck but it hadn't been well cared for and had some issues, though thankfully all fixable with some TLC)) but now I am really attached to them and although they'd be the first to go from my collection (I am thinking of consolidating and trading up the both of them for maybe a Japanese Strat right now) I am finding it hard to let them go and will likely hold off unless something really special comes along that I do fall in love with at first sight. Then I'll get that one and mod it 😂 Great vid Ryan

Put acorn nuts and loctite BLUE, not red, BLUE of the proper size on the studs after placing the trem on the now mounted plate.

Depends on the guitar. Wiring and pickups on a cheap guitar. Tuners, nut and maybe saddles.

IS it still a good guitar without modding ? I wouldn't risk modding a guitar myself I'm still a beginner but I love Surf rock

yep! I only modded it out of curiosity.

I don’t love the TOM on this. Even if the bridge rocks on the posts, it’s one more point where the string can bind. What I really want to know is what does this thing weigh?! There aren’t any weights listed on sweetwater yet.

"What kind of modding do you usually do?" I usually do the "never finish what I start" modding. Seriously. I get as far as gathering the parts, then realize how much WORK will be required to install them, and never actually start the work.

Great Topic. Usually its modding a guitar that i love. And I have a lot of Squires of this ilk. I was recently very dissappointed with a Fender Mustang i bought sight unseen though, Through my little experience modding cheaper guitars i was able to realize this one could not be saved. No modding was going to make me like this guitar. We just had no vibe. Sometimes thats what one has to do. If you dont like it thats that- let it go.

5 out of 6 were great guitars (squires) but then buying the Fender I got a dud. NOthing wrong with it other then its a a literal Dead wood. No resonance in this plank.

Curious as to the weight of the fender Mustang, was it much heavier or lighter than a squier? I have an epi lp and sg, both have virtually identical pickups, bridge, tuners, pots, neck yet the lp sounds better apart from the dull bridge pickup that many Gibson's also have?

@@johncollins5552 In this case the Mustang does seem to be a rather heavier wood. Its got a smaller body than most offsets, yet yes it does seem heavier than my Squire offsets with larger bodies. I do think that is the reason this particular guitar I did not like. It just doesnt seem to resonate well.

@John Collins This particular guitar is the "natural" unpainted but clear coated one with p-90s. You can actually see streaking almost like knots in the wood grain - so that may be the significant factor too. Im not sure. The pickups sound really weak too which seems strange for p-90s. It looks cool but sounds bad.
