Fun enough, an area in Germany I used to live in had a "shoe town". Their entire economy was making shoes and the town fell into poverty after all shoe production was outsourced to south east Asia.

Buy the cheap materials and sell the expensive products! This is the smart thing. Sell the materials and then buy the products is not a very good for your economy. Trust me, as Spanish we were dumb enough to do that for way too long. Once you get industrial it escalates even further. Also, I wish we could use mead from honey instead of beer from barley for the tavern.

I hope the dev sees that the trading points are way too broken. The trading discount once you get the reduced tariffs perk is insanely good and gives you access to everything else at a moments notice. It unbalances the game really early, which means that the difficulty is mostly about getting those perks asap.

There are those who might say that this is not capitalism because 'they aren't individually operating on a free market'. Given the drive towards creating surplus value, they would be wrong-headed libertarians. Markets were, and have always been, based in compulsory labour of some form. Sometimes it's serfdom. Sometimes it's slavery. Sometimes it's wages vs starvation. None of those constraints are directed by pure unfiltered physical limits. Even the shunned peasants will, in a competitive game, be driven by a leader who wishes to trade for competitive surplus, be that in weapons, trade, or other soft power.

If the market should turn out to be non-dynamic, this is a design flaw to be sure. Once it doesn't always have or need the relevant items, things become a lot more complicated. The best would be if the simulation was rooted in actual global supply and demand. If that is too demanding, something like diminishing returns could maybe serve as a solution, albeit a somewhat unsatisfactory one. Especially since real simulation is already an established selling point.

I don't see where exactly this is even capitalism adjacent. Trade/free trade™ isn't actually a feature of ONLY capitalism, and exist even in feudal societies you know that right? I get that this is joke promotion video but for joke to be funny it suppose to be at least partially based on reality.
