Today, we're continuing a multi-video journey on which we will be building historically accurate and authentic city designs in Manor lords, a highly anticipated city-building game! I will explain how the game works as I play and explain some historical details as we go!
Manor Lords on Steam: store.steampow...
Manor Lords is a strategy game that allows you to experience the life of a medieval lord. Grow your starting village into a bustling city, manage resources and production chains, and expand your lands through conquest.
Inspired by the art and architecture of late 14th century Franconia, Manor Lords prioritizes historical accuracy wherever possible, using it to inform gameplay mechanics and visuals alike. Common medieval tropes are avoided in favor of historical accuracy, in order to make the world feel more authentic, colorful, and believable.

I think yellow field (Gelbfeld) or yellow field village (Gelbfelddorf) would be awesome, due to the tavern being a large part of the town. The town is surrounded by fields of wheat to make the beer in the taverns. Please excuse my German, I do not speak the language.

How about "Radau" for the German village, which means "Radau-Caseritz" for the area? The place for it was carved from the forest, which is where the first part comes from - prefix Rade- is used for a "clearing" in the woods (cf. English rod, rode, royde), suffix -au is Slavic one (from Slavic -ov, -ów, used by Polabian Slavs and West Slavs in general to refer to a village or place, common in German village names in areas that used to be Slavic). Radau was built mostly by Slavic villagers/workers from Caseritz and Germans were always telling them to go work on the "wood clearing" (go cut down trees) and they added their suffix to it to label the place amongst themselves "Yeah, I have to go to Radeau/ Radau today."... and maybe it stuck?

@@jonasferenc6847 most likely some eastern or southern dialects, which I do not speak. Modern standart high german, as well as the low german language and all it's dialects have it spoken as -rode or Rode- or Roden-/Rhoden-. But low german is something which most people do not consider. Some think that it is a dialect of the german language. They are wrong. Because it is it's own. For example, Village names on low german translated into high german and english. Astenbeck - Schneller Bach - quick creek Blakeborn - Schwarze Quelle - black spring (of a creek) Lutter - Plätscherbach - (I don't know how to translate Plätschern into english, perhaps bubbly creek) Bremen - Rand - Rim Petersenwierde - Petersohns Weide - Peterson's pasture.

38:05 This “erosion of rights” is a constant throughout history. It is based on the material interests of the owner class (the lord) and the working class (the peasant). This contradiction within Feudalism is what drove medieval history and led to its eventual collapse. This allowed for the rise of Capitalism (with its inherent contradictions) in its place. The setting of Manor Lords is so interesting to me because it is set at the beginning stages of this qualitative change in society. You can already discern elements of the new system within the old. Fascinating!

Greetings from Australia! @7:11 I noticed on another Manor Lords gameplay video that you can indeed enter a numerical value DIRECTLY into the number field (10% in this case), allowing you to enter sub 10% incremental values, 3% for example. This allowed for a correspondingly lower Satisfaction penalty. I hope this helps. As someone of Dutch/Frisian heritage, I am enjoying the educational history aspect of your content. Be well.

Yo can make warbows for cheap, it only cost planks. They are also very good for export trades for that reason. However they will consume lots of planks if you don’t tell them to stop. When you talk about how people were gradually deprived of freedom, it reminded me of how (if I remember correctly) wool became extremely profitable in the 16th century, which in turn led to peasants being brutally driven off common land. Imagine you're just focusing on making a village somewhere and you get a notification that Ghouls have attacked one of your farms, or a Noonwraith has appeared in one of your fields. Yes, the United States did have a job like locators, but it was not quite the same. (Though I can't remember the job title,) this job was paid by the Federal Government to relocate families. Many people were lured out west with "Manifest Destiny," where they were given something like a $100 check (quite a lot of money back in the mid to late 1800's) and told that they had to police themselves so they would not be paying taxes like most people on the Eastern Seaboard. So, in modern terms, you are given $3,000, told to settle both uncharted and unclaimed land, then to develop that land as you see fit, and you don't have to pay taxes, not to mention that you must also administer the law of natural rights as necessary for protection of persons or property.

What time period is this roughly? Also where could I read more about the history of town development in Germany/Europe during this time?

I love that despite the dev saying visit mode is an experimental bonus feature and the game should be played in bird’s-eye view, the game’s details still hold up with how often you’re using it. Ignoring the mystery oven…

I've always learned that the smith is, like the charcoal burner, outside the village, to prevent the sparks to cause house fires.

If you’re cool with pronunciation comments, you were pronouncing “orchard” a little oddly in the previous video. “Orchard” has a “ch” like “church”. So it’s like “oar-chud”. Amazingly fluent English otherwise though! I love visits to Bavaria. I went to the Landshut Hochzeit one year. Great fun!

Excellent video. With a territory so rich in farmlands... this territory of Caseritz is great for advancing anything Farm or food-related (Farming/Commerce), while another territory can handle the manufacture of Weapons and such (Smithing/Commerce), and another territory can handle whatever else you need.

Love your work OPB. One thing though, quintessential is typically split quin-tessential, rather than quint-essential. Up to you if you want to change how you pronounce it. Best Manor Lords series I've seen on YT!

Amazing video, it amazes me how much effort this probably takes to do all this research on this stuff. But i think you could improve by being more specific becase it wasnt JUST the sorbs there were many others like for example the wends that were a mix of polish and ukrainian people who moved to modern day mecklenburg vorrpommern.

38:27 as far as I understand as well, the Middle Ages often saw people whose land were settled negotiate their own rights and privileges. It wasn’t a case of just naked one way colonisation, but the meeting of two world systems. Local slavic tribes may well have used the Germans for their own ends, instead of the Germans using them. This was also a time where custom and tradition could and did carry the force of law, as if a practice was as old as time then it would be an affront to God’s order to innovate it away. Peter Wilson even claims that, in the Holy Roman Empire especially, nobody ever ‘gained’ rights but instead worked out how laws applied to them and instead asserted rights they always had, which makes sense as to why people were so cross to see them taken away. To put it another way, people claimed to always have rights, they just hadn’t asserted them in a particular way as they hadn’t been challenged.
