In the summer I carry a 83"x35" tarp and a mini inflatable pillow in my daypack. It's just for laying on the ground. I may add another mini pillow for lumbar support. In the rainy season I include a 10 oz ripstop silnylon poncho that doubles as a shelter. Similar to the Temu, but bigger and four times the price. They are small and light enough that I'm willing to pack them.

I like that camping mat. I might get one and modify it. I could buy two foil windscreen covers and cut them up and stick them to the mat. There thinner than the foil sleeping mats you can buy and wouldn't add too much bulk to that sleeping mat.

4 of the heavy duty drum liners, less than $1 each, two layers, top and bottom, 11 ozs total and a bit of gorilla tape and a pile of dry debris you can suvive sleeping one night at 40F degrees, no rain, ,out of the wind Dont wear the outside layer when moving. The double layer, especially with a bit of dry debris between the layers, gives you the layer of air thats' trapped between the layers. Two of the liners go over your head torso, two over your legs. Let the top half over lap the bottom half, and tape them together (for the sleeping part) If you're just lost, find a big old dead tree and set it on fire. SOMEBODY is coming to check out that fire and there's your rescue. The drum liners are more useful than the poncho, cause you can carry/store things in them. It's not that big a deal to cut a piece out of a 5th drum liner for use as a hood, and tape it to one of the drumliners . Of course you'll have to have cut a head/neck hole in that liner. Fold the edges of the hood over and tape them, around a draw string made of paracord. Your boot strings should be made of paracord, also, since it's so useful. Get Fire cord, which has wire, cumbustable filaments, etc, in it. If you're out there without a compass, water filter, canteen, lighter, multiool, net hammock and this cover element, you're a fool who DESERVES what WILL happen to you. If it's cold/wet, set the hammock 6" off of the ground (with you in it) and kick debris under it, to stop air from flowing under you. You can heat up rocks to pull inside of your gear with your body, or to bury in the dirt under you. Hot air rises. You can and should have a Siberian fire lay on either side of your hammock, projecting their one-way heat at each other and thus, at you from both sides. THEN, my friend, your little 4 lb kit of gear can handle 34F, rain and wind, or much colder temps, if you're someplace out of the wind and rain. YT has vids about the Siberian and also about the alternative Swedish fire torch. the swede is what you need to ignite the siberian when all is wet. You only need shavings and scrapings from the inside of ONE dry stick to ignite the Swede. The swede and Siberians, once they are burning well, cannot be extinguished by rain and they will also burn green, wet wood, if need-be. The swede dries itself from the inside out and it's "chimney effect", lets it ignite the exposed ends of the Siberian, which then dries itself out from one end.

Pastor Doug, you increase my desire to be in the woods! Enjoyable video & a return to basics. I agree that unnecessary expenditure of valuable energy can seriously complicate an emergency situation. A construction size trash bag weighs less & costs less than the very nice mat from Temu. A browse bed UNDERNEATH provides better insulation. A variation of your shelter would be the plow point, but that is a matter of personal preference. Your video strongly echoes the wisdom that an ounce of PREVENTION is worth a pound of CURE! if everything is wet, sit on the mat, back to a tree, legs crossed, the poncho forming a teepee and light a small round fondue candle deposited on the ground between legs or otherwise. In the pocket of my poncho, I always keep two candles and a bic lighter

Nice. The serviceable gear that is affordable enough to be with you will beat the “Gucci gear” you don’t have. Add two or three 55 gallon drum liners to that kit for a browse bed and I think you’re all set for a cheap emergency shelter.

If it does what it is supposed to do, is robust enough (doesn't have to be bomb-proof) and at that price, then why not? For the price, if it genuinely saves one's life in a situation and cannot ever be used again thereafter, then it has still more than earned it's keep. 'Having and not ever needing to use', in my book, beats 'Needing and not having to use' every time.

The only seam is the one around the neck. The poncho itself is one big sheet. I wasn't getting any leaks. It was torrential rains at times.

Yes, I agree. One drawback (as I mentioned in this video) is that plastic sheeting is easily torn by brush. PVC ponchos are basically a sheet of plastic with the addition of a hood. These can work if you stick to the trail, or are very careful around brush, etc. But really I recommend a ripstop poncho w/ PU coating like the one I show here.............

How come you don't talk about the the people that went out hiking in the heat wave and perished I heard of at least 5 people on the Pacific Crest trail and other places I liked it when you used to talk about all the hikers and what could have happened to them you make a really good news reporter I wish you could start doing it again I enjoyed the way you tell the story

I was there for 6 days , legs swelling up something fierce, getting neuropathy in feet . IF Anyone knows how I can stop the Neuropathy PLEASE let me know, Please. .Dr said I have Lympdeema , poor circulation in lower legs, Disabling me terrible. On the topic of cheap shit you wish you had when youre on the ground in the rain, unable to move - get a very 3mm foam mat 100 x 150cm. doesnt absorb water, R value of about 1, folds up small and can act as a structure to a backpack unlike the huge ones. Less than 50 grams. Great for sitting on when youre not injured, or adding extra protection to an inflatable pad. I never leave without one.
