As a Combat Medic we mix these two quite often. They work very well together. Almost as well as Opioid pain killer especially in the field where performance may still be required. For initial dosing I usually do 2x2 then 1x1 there after as needed. This sometimes gets a bit high for normal dosing. But we are talking field emergency situations with generally healthy soldiers

Something not stressed here, and should be noted (these doctors know this but I think they sort of skipped over this): If a tablet is enteric-coated, such as basic Ibuprofen, DO NOT cut or crush these tablets. The special coating is there to protect your stomach. As always, if you’re not sure, ask your nurse, doctor, or pharmacist. -Fran RN (ret.)

The way it was explained to me was these 2 meds work in very different ways. Ibuprofen goes to the source of the pain, and tackles the inflammation that causes the pain, and acetaminophen works by telling your brain it doesn't hurt. ????? The biggest advantage of taking these two drug together, other than the different MOAs (mode of action), is that you can lower the dosage of each one. 200 mg of Tylenol is less damaging on the kidneys than the usual 400mg and 325 or 650mg of Tylenol is less harsh on the liver than a full gram (i.e. 2 x 500). This combo works really well for me - headaches. Taking 4 grams of Tylenol a day is an excellent recipe for those seeking a kidney transplant. I think the docs completely missed the fact that you can lower the dosage.

That's really helpful. I've learned a lot about pain control (as opposed to pain relief) as a result of a broken wrist and a broken ankle 11 years later. I wasn't getting much help or advice from my GP and found a lot of this information about combining the two on the internet, but this video explains why what I found worked for me - worked. Super helpful to have my own research findings confirmed and more information about why. It wasn't the broken bones that caused me to grind my teeth with pain, it was the post-surgery recovery for about 10 days that was the problem. British GPs seem incredibly reluctant to prescribe opiods now which is excruciatingly frustrating post-operatively. I'm still struggling with my ankle sometimes, six months after surgery, but paracetemol works wonders when I've overdone it!
@TalkingWithDocs Жыл бұрын

@peterk92434 ай бұрын
Okay, so the main reason you can take acetaminophen and ibuprofen together is because they work on two completely different receptors. The one thing you don't want to do is take two medicine that bind to the same receptors, because then typical dosing goes out of the window. There is a point to be had about liver metabolism, when you're mixing medication. You can check the insert for such issues, but it's better to ask your pharmacist when you are in any sort of doubt. That is not to say that both acetaminophen and ibuprofen aren't potentially dangerous when used for prolonged periods of time. Talk to your GP when you feel you need to rely on either - or both - for more than a week or so.

I also felt very dizzy and loopy like I waa drunk. Maybe it just happened to me idk. I would suggest that you ask your personal doctor before doing so. I've taken both 4 hours apart with no problems. If you are taking a opioid combination with a opioid/ibuprofen or acetaminophen, and you want to either take a Tylenol with your opioid/ibuprofen combination vice versa! You should most definitely talk to your personal doctor 1st.

Acute Rehab RN here- this combo is not unusual for our multiple trauma/fracture patients (of course those without renal or hepatic impairment). That combo gets ordered as a routine pain management modality, with prn opioids on board. And those patients usually get Lidocaine topical patches administered around the affected site (assuming the fracture is not in a cast, like an ORIF of the hip), and some kind of muscle rub cream (think of bengay) to apply as well. Good info for the average layperson!

Acetylayed monodiglycerides do not appear to be soy free. They are an inactive ingredient in the popular muscle relaxer. Please correct me if that is incorrect.

Hi Michael. Not sure. Best to review with your pharmacist if you have a soy allergy. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Docs you make this information so interesting. I personally like the idea of alternating between acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Just logic. It’s like you mention In other videos it depends on the person and how the body reacts to the different medications and or topicals. Alicia

How can you tell the difference in fluid on the knee amd a blood clot? Trick question. It happened to me.
@TalkingWithDocs3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle W. So often the only way to tell is an ultrasound. And the clot can be painful. Sometimes redness of the overlying skin. Sorry to hear that. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.

I had a total hip replacement 4 weeks ago. I was on opioids in the hospital (overnight stay), and was prescribed 2 opioid meds upon discharge, along with several other meds. I did not take any of the Oxycodone, and only took the Tramadol for 2 days. Essentially, all I've taken for pain is 1000 mg of Acetaminophen 3 or 4 times a day. Yes, I still have the pain, though not as intense as the first week, but I have a rather high tolerance anyway, and I did not want to take the opioids. My Dr. did instruct me not to take NSAIDs while on the Acetaminophen, but since that is my pain reliever of choice, I may take your advice and intersperse some Ibuprofen with the Acetaminophen. Thanks!

Hey Docs what is good to lower magnesium in the body?
@TalkingWithDocs3 жыл бұрын
Hi shasta. So it would depend on the cause. First to reduce consumption. If it is serious you would need doctor supervision for things like intravenous calcium or diuretics. Good luck. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.

Is there any way other way to take an anti inflamatory that can bypass the kidneys like in a form of injection for hip bursitis? Thank you doctors.
@lmrinmn3 жыл бұрын
It is still processed the same. It isn't how we ingest it, it's how our bodies process it, metabolize it. So there is no way to bypass the kidneys or liver when using either if these drugs.

Hi chelita41. Yes you can use a topical or a local injection for sure. Discuss with your pharmacist but the amount that ends up in your kidneys is much less. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.

I just had the most excruciating dental pain of my whole life. My wisdom tooth had an abcess and I took 2 pain killers together (without codeine) for the first time along with a muscle relaxant and 2 antibiotics. I also just learned I have cysts on a kidney. Apparently the cysts are benign but now I wonder what all the painkillers may have done to the kidney. Yikes!!

I have had chronic pain when throwing ever since I was little so I use to take ibuprofen before each softball game I play in, as an adult, and sometimes it just wouldn’t work at all. I started taking Tylenol and Advil together before I go and play softball, and for the first time in my life I can play softball and stay pain free.

I alternate Tylenol with Naproxen. But I alternate them by the hours..spacing them 4 to 6 hours apart. Tylenol for pain, and Naproxen for inflammation. But these two do not even mention the types of pills they are. Some are "TIME RELEASE" with little holes drilled in them so you get a small quantity at a time. These types should never be crushed under any circumstances.
