Here in 2022. I have opened up small motors like that before. It's a delicate process, because for one thing, you don't really want to break or overbend any tabs that keep the cylindrical housing together. As an example of a small motor that I've fixed before, I opened the motor on a separate VHS rewinder box. Yes, those old things. I have also opened up an even smaller motor for a toy boat. It's most likely that trimmer motors are all brushed motors, simply because they startup faster & have more start power than brushless. One thing you can try on your old trimmer is to open it up again, put a drop of lubricating oil, like SAE20 light machine oil, on both ends of the motor shaft. That could be the problem, there's no lubrication on the motor axle/shaft & could possibly creating that screech. Again, you have to oil both sides. You can do that without having to open up the motor cylinder housing, which could ruin it if you're not careful.

@@TheFixitShed ... Ah that's too bad, I guess I was late, lol. I now have a string trimmer (electric) that is not auto-feeding the string correctly & I've been trying to troubleshoot it. And also another string trimmer that's much older (gasoline) & I'm about to replace the fuel line, which the original fuel line tubing was made of rubber & had since crumbled into bits, which was expected since this trimmer is over 30 years old. I hope that's the only issue & not something more complicated, like the carburetor or something.

I have just had the same thing happen with mine. 20v model. Just about a year old. Screeching scraping noise, a lot of resistance. Took it apart, about a 1/2 piece of plastic fell out. No debris. My 18v BD trimmer lasted more than 10 years until I bought a “compatible” replacement battery from Amazon and it promptly caught fire. Amazon gave me $5 towards the new one. Blessed! 🤬

I have a B&D 60V. These things have a long way to go. If you trim even slightly wet grass- the countdown to failure begins. They are very susceptible to moisture & crud. I am going back to a gas weed wacker. These 60V units really are toys. Great for a month maybe two. Then the fun begins.
@TheFixitShed Жыл бұрын
The B&D equipment I have had tends to be low end consumber grade. They are designed to be inexpensive, and generally work fine initially, but don't hold up over the long run. I have a WORX string trimmer that I would put into the same category. I have a Kobalt 40v Max string trimmer that I like 10x better than the B&D and WORX trimmers, but I haven't tried it in wet conditions to see how it holds up.

I found this video because my B&D is making that sound (maybe worse, actually.) It still works, though, so I was happy to see what's "under the cover." I'll likely take it apart, but unless the lube works better than on yours, I see a new trimmer in my future.

It will not turn on any more. I'm pretty sure my motor gave out. I got a deal on a 20v that will use all the 20v batteries I had collected for the 18v with adapter. $75 with 2 batteries & adapters. Just the batteries alone sell for more then the whole package, so I upgraded to a new old stock 20v version. But thanks to the video, I now know how to poke around the inside to investigate. I might end up saving it still. :)

Hello, great video. Would the motor be bad if it is squeaking or something? My string trimmer is making big squeaking sound when it is turned on with the housing but then it is not squeaking when the housing is not on. The sound is similar to your trimmer. It is kind of weird as I saw in your video that the motor is making the noise.
@TheFixitShed6 ай бұрын
If the motoe was bad, I would think it should squeak all the time. If it is only making noise when the housing is on, it might be something is just rubbing on the housing.
@derekc67136 ай бұрын
@@TheFixitShed Thank you for your reply. I did some oil on the backside of the motor shaft. It is better but still after 15 min of use, the motor will squeak again. I think that the motor is probably gone, and need replacement soon. It will rest and then okay the next day with fresh battery charging. I got the LST300 and it is pretty good considering it is probably been used extensively for 10 years plus.

I can't get my weed eater to go on. It's battery powered and fully charged. It won't start. Do you know what the problem might be?
@TheFixitShed5 ай бұрын
Very difficult to say with the info I have. Is the battery seated properly? It could be that the trigger broke internally and is no longer making a connection. It could be a wire or solder joint broke. Does it make any noise when you try to use it? If it hums, then there is power getting to the motor, but it is stuck for some reason. There might be something wrapped around the spindle that is preventing it from turning, or something internal to the motor may have broken. Some debris may have gotten into the gears, etc.
