Can it really do Orange amp tones? Joyo Oxford Sound

Because you asked the viewers, I think the Oxford sounds great. I don’t have great luck using my Joyos direct into cab sims either, but I have Amplitube and other great plugins for that. These are best when being used as a dirt pedal into an amp. Imo, because you asked. Good demo.

Ooh I'm excited for your take on it. I have the oxford and it does great... For part of it's gain knob. The extremes on this pedal fall apart, it loves being put at noon though.

I'm happy I'm not the only one having noise problems with the gain up high. With the gain all the way up, not even a noise gate really saves it to me, it's just way too noisy. But seriously, everything at noon it sounds great.

I assumed mine was slightly defective, but sounds like that's an issue across the board. It's a bit disappointing as the others aren't that bad

I had American sound and Actone and sold both because of noise. They were noisy even on mid gain. Great tone but too much noise

I put mine into an ir pedal. Badass tone. These Joyo pedals were originally advertised as preamp pedals. They are not amp in a box pedals. Or amp simulators.

Yeah, the 'cab sim' part of the pedal leaves some to be desired but when you pair them with an IR they can sound phenomenal 👍

I use mine with the Voice knob turned way up and the Gain knob turned way down, so it has a sort of "pushed clean" sound, and then when I kick in my Joyo Argos Drive, it gets pretty heavily saturated. I keep the gain knob for both pedals around 9 o'clock. It's high enough gain to use for metal, especially nu metal, metalcore, pop mosh or djent. of course, I'm a true mad lad, so I blend that tone with chainsaw tones via a chain where I run a Joyo Uzi into a TC Electronic Eyemaster into a Flamma Turbo RAT Clone.

Are you using a gate with that? I can imagine pushing that amount of gain isn't going to be the cleanest signal 👍

@@BudgetPedalChap I run a parallel setup using two separate signal paths with an ABY. The Orange and the Argos Drive are on one side. The Argos Drive has a built-in noise gate. The other side is the Uzi into the Eyemaster into the Turbo Rat, and that side is gated via a Demon FX Filtration II g-String. The Uzi and Eyemaster are both run as boosts, with their gain all the way down and volume all the way up, and the RAT Turbo has the gain at 9 o'clock. Both of these FX chains can run into a pair of parallel inputs on a Class D power amp, or they can be sent to two different FX Returns, etc. I don't get any significant noise.

@@BudgetPedalChap So, was this done with single coil pickups, like on a Strat? It seems quite rare for reviewers to say what sort of pickups were used, and I'm not always sure, if I can't see the guitar. Mine have single coils and I often can't get close to the sounds I hear in demos.

Yeah this was a strat style guitar through a neutral sounding fender clean. I tend to play for the most part on the neck pickup until we get to the higher gain sections 👍

Late, but maybe looking at the noise on a computer ( spectrum analyzer or something) may show some specific frequencies you can cut a bit to reduce the more audible noise without wrecking your tone too much. If you're using it to record on a computer, then you can kill the noise with software (phase inverting the noise works well).

Yeah, I would run a gate with this one for sure. I think the frequency that the noise sits in is also the mid range that gives the pedals it's character so I'd try and avoid that where possible.

I aim to show off all the tones you can expect in these units. I do, I must admit, sometimes get lost in the big gainy sounds and end up recording 20 minutes more than I need 🤣🤣 gotta be done though eh?

Funny how Orange are associated with a fuzzy distortion loved by Doomers considering when they first came out the band most associated with them was Wishbone Ash( early 70's) who had some stellar guitar sounds ( on the first 3 or 4 albums) but they were pretty clean with a bit of edge.

Yeah, they've really carved out a niche in the last couple of decades. I remember seeing a bunch of classic bands using them at certain points, all of which having a nice tight classic rock crunch.

70s Orange amps sounded very different to modern ones. The new ones are geared more towards metal.

This is the noisiest one out of the lot that I own. I think the EQ is very powerful but also can introduce a bit of noise too. They are all fab though and I would recommend the American and British sound if you've not already tried them 👍

@@BudgetPedalChap Yes, I have American, British and California Sound. Noise with high voice+drive settings is not a problem, since I have several overdrive, distortion and fuzz pedals. Without my Joyo truetones I would consider TC Electronic Ampworks pedals, but they cost €165 in Europe.

I'm thinking of getting this as an alternative to the Kuro T120 which is quite expensive where I am (pedal price and shipping cost). Does this come close to OR120/GT120 territory when it comes fundamental tone for doom metal? Any doom heads that have tried this yet?

I would say even if this does come close (I'm not sure, I'll be honest), the circuit is very noisy at higher gain settings. You'll need to at very least get a noise gate, but I think it may not be the best choice for higher gain applications 👍

@@BudgetPedalChap Hi! Thanks for the response! Anyhow, I intend to use it with my mooer baby bomb 30 watt power amp and 2x12 Laney Cub Cab. The Joyo will be the preamp that goes into the mooer and on low gain probably around 9 o' clock then whatever dirt pedal in front of it. I am more concerned on how is it's low end response is with this type of setup wether live or recording wise. What do you think? Is it worth it?

If you are using it low gain, there is a lot of flexibility in the EQ so it should be good. They don't cost much so the risk is pretty low if you're not the biggest fan 👍

Nothing that I'm aware of. Maybe something in the Mooer mini pedal amp series, but I've never tried one so can't say for certain. If you do find anything, let me know as I'd be very interested 👍
