JustAnswer.com told the owner to CUT ALL SIX 5V Supply wires at the ECM for some reason.

I have to admit when I first saw the carnage under the hood I thought holy crap, or something like that. I most likely would not have touched it, but that is a poor attitude on my part. I think Ivan looked at it like a wounded animal that needed help and He just rolled his sleeves up and nursed it back to good health. Great attitude and another valuable lesson.

I had a kid call me to come over to his apartment. He has engine problems. So he bought a used engine. And he called a mobile mechanic for help. He said the mobile mechanic installed new main bearings and rod bearings. The guy just an impact wrench to tighten everything up. No torque wrench required 😅😅😅 I come over. The car tries to start. I noticed the O2 sensors are not hooked up. ?? I see the O2 sensors ends laying on the top of the engine. I ask?? He says, the wires were in the way, so I just whacked them off. I said. You just push this thingy and it will pop loose. He says. Really!! I said yup. And no wonder the car will not run. After a few tries, the engine kicks to life. Then rattling and knocking noises. 😅😅😅 He shuts it off.??? I tell him. Wellll, when the mobile mechanic didn't use a torque wrench on critical fasteners, you get this.

I just fired the gasket cannon on a 20K mile engine that has been sitting in my garage for 7 years. Why risk leaks when it is easy to get at everything while out of the car. Plus it let me put some assembly lube on the crank and cams up top for the big reveal. Fathers day goes VROOM. Just need to finish the AC system.

The public has a LOT of nerve, especially as shop rates are SKYROCKETING. They will walk in and announce, "I can only afford $x.xx, and I don't pay those ripoff diagnostic fees, just for the REPAIRS." 😂 They also weaponize social media and ratings platforms if you kick them out, or they "FEEL" unsatisfied. I no longer entertain the public, only business-to-business, for that very reason.

Actually you can blame the owner especially since he "Claims" to have watched your videos. Your method of diagnosis is methodical and straight forward and takes the parts cannon out of the picture and if parts are required it is the last step after careful consideration of all the facts. Cutting wires may have a place in diagnosis but not at the hands of someone that does not understand the circuit to begin with. I've only deliberately cut a wire once, and that was after research in a manual not garbage information on the interwebs. Kenwood radios use a clock signal running out to microphones that also have a keypad. They use untwisted, unshielded wire for some reason. So the clock signal ends up bleeding into the mic circuit, and you get an annoying 1Hz click - 1 PPS in engineering speak - when you transmit. You can't hear it but everyone else can. The solution, if you never need the key pad, is to snip the clock signal wire. I go a step further by creating a small extension to the mic cable that doesn't include that wire because the wire can still act like a transmission line even when cut.

Avionics technicians always crimp. Solder is a big no-no for stranded wire in general but moreso on anything that vibrates like cars, boats, and airplanes. The FAA even calls this out for repairs.

There isn't a soldered connection from the factory. Capillary action causes solder to harden the strands and vibration can break them.

@@brassmule I think a lot of mechanics just would have looked at the mess and refused to work on it. It's easy to say in retrospect it was an easy fix, but until you get into it you don't know. Maybe you forgot Ivan had an email correspondence to get the full history of work done to it, (which can either hurt or help). Despite the owner stating he has put too much into it to stop, there is still a chance he will think any repair is too costly. He said "another shop" reprogrammed the computer, but who busted up the connections? If the computer was as it was then how did they program it...(of course it seems like it wasn't)

Don't beat yourself up. You explain just fine. Sometimes you have individuals that will do the opposite. I have had that scenario several times. Tell him to do A, B, C etc. and immediately as I am standing there just finished explaining and they do none of it . Had one guy so bad showed him to click screen here, here, here and here and could not do it after repeating procedure 6 times he still could not do it and got mad at me as our company needs to have a better training program as he could not do it. His employee completed it after watching in the background and he then got mad at him and employee got in trouble. I could only feel his pain of having to report to someone completely incompetent.

First of all, you do a very good job of explaining what you do and how you do it. I wouldn't change a thing in your presentation. I would, however, emphasize to the customer that he might leave the diagnosis to the professionals before he cuts more wires or fires the parts cannon. You didn't say if you offered a discount, Ivan. Eric O has to get the Hyundai/Kia PCMs unlocked by someone else so that he can rewrite the VIN onto the PCM,it can be rewritten once but after that you need to send it to a person who specialises in unlocking these PCMs. As I said on the last comment,it was probably a little s**t who was playing a prank on your customer online by telling him to cut the wires in the wiring harness,the customer believed them !

There's more to the story about how those wires got cut. You're doing a fine job on relaying information. To utilize it though, you have to have tread softly. Doesn't make sense to ever cut a wire. I think just ask was pulling one on the owner....

Justanswers told me to stick a bean burrito into the air intake to fix an issue I was having with a tpms sensor. I've done that but it's not working so I went ahead and replaced the fuel pump and crank sensor. I would like to get this to you, towing from California. I'm expecting the same discount that you gave this gentleman. I'm also leaving both the red and green sauces for you in the passenger seat in case you need it for the bean burrito. I didn't cut any wires so it should be pretty easy for you. I did cut off all the valve stems on the tires though since that seems to be required for fixing tpms timing codes.

I too have noticed that my thinktool pros does wonky things from time to time after an update. But it seems to sort itself out eventually. I know what you mean about the patches though. My Launch X431 Pad II has the option to keep an older version in case you need to roll back just because. It's one of Launches best features and why I love it so much. I am a reasonably competent mechanic ... not evena teeny bit competent to start messing around with Electronics . I did buy an abs scan tool which was amazing . i followed the on line advice to swap the electronic part of the abs module .. everything worked fine . after replacing the brake pads some crud must have jammed one of the abs valves ..causing the brake pedal to sink slowly to the floor . I flushed the abs block thoroughly using brake cleaner spray an airline and a plastic syringe filled with clean Brake fluid .

"Just" answer... There's two meanings. Just answer it, no matter what, there needs to be an answer. If you need to go somewhere with your vehicle, just have it towed, that is also an answer. And a "just" answer could also be an answer that is correct and the right thing to do. It's hard to believe that this owner has been watching PHAD vids and then proceeds by cutting wires, messing up connectors, fire the parts cannon, because of just another answer. It's more likely that he stumbled upon PHAD after messing up his vehicle.

A vet on JustAnswer helped me revive the family goldfish once using pool water test strips and a bait bubbler. Maybe you need more "quiz" questions where you ask what would be tested next 😁. It seems that the owner of this vehicle was still in the mentality of "try to think what is wrong" rather than "try to think of a good next test". Honestly, the comments are also often full of extremely confident sounding guesses. The difference between a guess and a hypothesis...

Just a word of advice, those connectors should be fixed in place (as in having the clamp mecanism). Ive done too many diags where a PCM plug has been tampered and broken and since it doesnt latch anymore by driving around the vibration causes the connectors to back out 😅

Maybe the Thinktool scanner couldn't talk to the transmission computer when the VIN was incorrect? I.E. maybe it tried to talk to some other type of transmission computer (different protocol/commands/whatnot)?
