Oh we have a JUICY case study for this weekend...grab your popcorn!!
This 2012 Chevy Silverado 2500HD V8 is a hard-working truck with 430k miles!!
Owner replaced the engine 4 years ago, and everything was great until the last few months...
The Big Chevy started running like GARBAGE!
The Dealer and local shops couldn't figure it out...
The FRUSTRATED owner loaded up his own PARTS CANNON, but that didn't work either.
EVERY electrical component under the hood has been replaced, including the ECM and 5 FUEL PUMPS!!!
**ALL-TIME PARTS CANNON RECORD!!**
The truck is really hard to start cold, and both LEAN and RICH codes are stored...CRAZY!
Let's start from scratch, look at the history, read codes, plot some scan data and go for a test drive.
The owner has DOUBTS that PHAD can pinpoint the problem...he is ready to JUNK HIS TRUCK!!
How long will it take to nail down this issue?
Place your Bets Now!

I'm a retired geezer with only minor auto repair experience... When watching Ivan I develop a thinking that his videos are required viewing for pro mechanics. That it's a way to experience COMPLICATED repairs. Are there many pro mechanics watching??

if todays techs don't watch, neither do some older mechanics. the young guys will be mentally tired as well as physically, and I can just hear the "newfangled doohickey" complaints in old guy voices just by imagining them.

Dude, I have a customer (We actually grew up together) with a 2500HD that had same issues when he bought it. He is one of those people that will tell you what he wants done. I finally sent him somewhere else because I got tired of changing the parts he wanted changed. I got to the point that when he brings a vehicle and tries to tell me what he thinks is wrong, I tell him "I don't want to hear what you think is wrong Wes. I don't care what you think is wrong. I want you to tell me what the issue is and I will find out what's wrong." XD I believe he told me he finally had an ECM put in it and it cured his running probs.

If Ivan can’t fix it, it’s demon possessed and you need to throw it in a volcano as a sacrifice.

If I installed a new engine, I think I would not have used the old 300K injectors, unless perhaps they were recently replaced before the engine replacement. One thing about getting a vehicle that’s had the parts cannon blasted at it is that it does give a relatively good idea of what isn’t wrong with it 😂. I’m not making light of the customer’s plight but as a technician I’ve received vehicles like this that I repaired relatively quickly and it wasn’t necessarily because I was so good. It was more like I had a pretty detailed record of what wasn’t wrong with it.

It is crazy that they changed the fuel pump so many times that they cut a hole in the bed of the truck. I have seen Internet self described geniuses recommend doing this on other GM vehicles. Hi Ivan, When he mentioned about doing the underbody wash and it running better, could the cab ground be getting frayed? I've had two vehicles manuals in AllData for years when they had the $60 per year. Now with the new system only available plan is $119 per month. I'm not a repair shop but wanted to be able to access data when needed. Do you know of another reasonably priced option available for the home mechanic? Stay safe.

@@DonDegidio given the erratic fuel trims and the vehicle running just fine under certain conditions, I suspect correlation versus causation. Coincidence. Owner is desperate at this point and likely very frustrated. Data is key…fuel trims clearly indicate this is a fuel delivery issue.

First thing I'd do is see if this is a real alcohol sensor or just a calculated value. I recall that the calculated value vehicles can drift and need to be "reset." Because they are a reputable online seller and back all their parts with a generous return policy. Reputation is key to their business model. As a seller, they are also liable if selling genuine OEM auto parts advertised as such that are not. Since they are online only, they could also be liable for committing mail fraud. Ebay isn’t the seller…they are enabling a transaction between the seller and buyer. Rockauto has low prices on OEM parts due to leverage and lower margins (but much higher volumes) relative to a dealership selling the same parts. If it is too good to be true…
