Can Latinos Say the "N" Word?

The "n" word is controversial, it can be used casually as a term of endearment amongst friends or be one of the gravest insults if used by the wrong person in the wrong context. The question is, who can say the "n" word? Are Latinos exempt?? Watch to find out.

You know that whole 600 year time period when White Europeans were buying and selling Black Africans as chattel? And remember how that whole system was enforced by a violent system of repression whereby Black slaves who did not act the way the White folks wanted them to were beaten and murdered? Oh, and remember that time after slavery when Black people were locked in a system called Jim Crow that used a similar fear of violence and repression to keep Black people in “their place?” Well, in the midst of all that shit, there was a word invented by White people as a pejorative for Black folks. And it was used just about every time a Black person was whipped, chained, beaten, insulted, spat upon, raped, lynched, or otherwise humiliated and mistreated by White folks. Thus, I really don’t care how much White folks want to use that word. I don’t care how unfair you think it is that someone else gets to use it when we don’t. Our people gave up the privilege to use that word the moment we invented it as a tool of oppression.

as a Latina, I've heard a handful of Latinos use the N word around their black friends and no one cares and no one's bothered by it. I feel like it comes down to who you associate with and who you're around and the context of it? But I'd also like to say, as many Latinos in the comments are saying, in Spanish the word "Negro" means Black, whether that be a person or the colour itself. It's not an offensive term, it's just black. It's can even be an endearing nickname for darker skinned people, we call them Nergo/a or Negrito/a :)

It isn't morally incorrect to say something though. It all always depends on the action and intentions. The more people keep forbidding the word, then the worse the word is gonna look. MrOktoberfest 00 Language evolves in different ways depending on history and culture. In the US the N-word evolved to have an offensive meaning towards African Americans. In Latin America there was also slavery but in my opinion it wasn't as bad as it was in the states in most places. In the US racism continued after slavery with segregation and lynching making the word much more hurtful. You can't just diss on the way a culture uses a word without understanding that word's roots and history.

If I'm gonna be honest, black people don't even use the N word really. At my school the Hispanics and whites say the N word *all the time* & us black people rarely use it lmao. Edit- to make it clear ppl commenting think I’m capping but I’m really not. I’m from north Dallas, predominantly Hispanic/Latino, and black. Some black ppl let it slide when they say the n word, and others don’t. Tbh, some black ppl here I know get more offended when a white person says it rather than a Hispanic person.

I’m black and I don’t even particularly like to use the n word. For me no one should. However I cannot make everyone stop saying it so, I think that people should not say the n word if they have never been oppressed by specifically the n word. The same rule goes for any other powerful slur.

Xochitl Nunez I agree and in term of Hispanics a lot of them say that they are used to this word. Taking this into consideration I believe that they should adapt and learn to not say it in an American setting, or at least watch who they say it around. I get it, some people are unknowing of the offensiveness of the n word. But once you know and remember there is no excuse. Some black people, including me, feel really threatened when the n word is used around them.

Most Mexicans have some African roots as more Africans slaves were sent to Mexico than in the US during the slave trade. That is why many Mexicans are very brown and called morenos. Our 2nd president Vicente Guerrero was African, our first free city was gained trough Yanga an African Slave that harassed the Spanish to the point that they gave him freedom. Whether we are allowed to say the N-word is technical, yes, but I won't use it.

@@archdh4767 Even if what you said is true, in the context of America I don't think the N word was ever used as a derogatory term against Mexicans and generally speaking when someone refers to a black person they are probably not referring to Mexicans. They are more likely referring to either an African American, Afro Caribbean (e.g. Jamaican, Haitian etc) or someone directly from the continent of Africa. That's why it's debatable as to whether or not Mexicans should get a pass to use to the N word, even if some of them have distant African roots dating back to slavery days.

What I notice most people don't mention is that negro means literally black (un lápiz negro: a black pencil). So when you refer to someone as "negro" you're actually saying "black". Still, it can be offensive depending in the tone of the person who says it. In the other hand it amazes me how americans like to label people, even if they're white, as the dude in the video.

@@pabloperrier True, the cultural backgrounds are indeed different. That's why Anglo Americans feel much closer culturally to African Americans than they do to Latinos whom they always view as foreigners regardless of the time spent in the USA. About discrimination, you must mean predominantly European or Mestizo Latinos since Afro Latinos, AKA black Latinos, suffer racial discrimination in the USA just as African Americans do. For example, during Jim Crow, they were obligated to undergo the same segregation. I had an Afro Latino in-law family member who underwent that treatment when having on leave from the army and temporarily residing in Miami. One very important difference in the discrimination, unfortunately, is that very often Afro Latinos have to endure the discrimination from certain African American racists as well.
